Melissa, My records show a Sarah M.C. Rainwater, bn abt 1841, daughter of Gabriel Rainwater and Nancy Toney as well as a Sarah C. Rainwater, bn abt 1849, daughter of Zebulon Miles Rainwater and Lilla Ann Thompson. I have no idea who either of these Sarahs married. These are the only Sarah Rainwaters out of 13 that I have in my records that come close to matching your inquiry, and no exact matches. Looking for info on Sarah C Rainwaters married to Alfred McAbee and b@1840 in ? possibly AL. Thanks, redfox
At the risk of boring the 'old hats', I have a suggestion. I see this happen on all the lists I subscribe to. Someone closely works with their own family lineages. They're nose to nose with the data, maybe daily. They *know* by heart what States and Dates, yet often I see an inquiry looking for William Whos-Its, but there is no State and no Date ... not even educated guesses At the moment two other subscribers and myself are trying to develop a system to sort out the seemingly endless number of William Rainwater(s). Any idea how MANY there were? I have nearly 70 in my own database, from 20 or more States, across 250 plus years. Be more specific with your inquiries. After all, when we send a message/inquiry don't we do it in hopes of receiving a positive response from a new cousin? I don't know about you all, but I get very excited when I am contacted by a new cousin. That's the name of this game ... at least from my perspective. Actual SAMPLE... Looking for Julius Schimmel, b 12/1857 someplace in Germany. First identifed in Cook County Chicago 1880 census married to Louisa. Died in Cook County 1916. Children fround in Cook, Lake and McHenry Counties of Illinois. OKay, so I don't *know* everything about him. He was my mystery great grandfather, but I'm not ashamed to admit it. Anyone with name/date/place close to fitting the above info would have no difficulty recognizing the connection ... which is exactly what happened because their was enough information given. She was born and raised in Rock Island County, Illinois, but recognized that her grandfather was from McHenry County ... and we *connected*. Excited? You bet! We're second cousins and she has two sisters to boot! Furthermore, my new cousin's older sister had a picture of an Otillie Schimmel in an album handed down to her. Who was the pictured woman? None of us knew ... until a marriage record was found. Otillie Schimmel married Ludwig Heicher and it all came together. Julus Schimmel's obit named a surviving sister Ophelia Heicher. Otillie was her nickname. Be more specific with your family inquiries. Works for me. Bob Schimmel, listowner
Hello Rainwater List, The following was passed along to me by a fellow Rainwater researcher. It is an interesting little sketch of a Rainwater family reported to be a part-blood Cherokee. To see more on John Raliegh Rainwater's ancestry go to Ron Gray's tree at <www.familytreemaker.com/users/g/r/a/Ronald-A-Gray/index.html> Look under Gereration 5, 13, iii. Note: Jeanette's name is spelled Genetta. I received the story as follows and deleted the name of the person who wrote it: ____________________________________________________ Have you ever corresponded with ________ of KY? A number of years ago she wrote to me the following: "I knew nothing personally about Dad's uncles and aunts except the youngest child, Jeanette (Thomas) Rainwater. Quite by accident, I stumbled upon one of her grand-daughters, Earthy Humble of Arkansas. She was 88 yrs old then. From her I learned the story of Jeanette's life. As before said, Jeanette Thomas married John Rainwater. He was a Cherokee Indian. As Jeanette told her grand-daughter, she looked up one day and saw him coming over the mountain, and he was the most handsome man she ever laid eyes on. They got married when she was 19 yrs old. Evidently other women considered John Rainwater handsome too, for several years later, he left Jeanette and their 7 children for another woman. Jeanette had a stroke which left her paralyzed on one side, and she walked on a cane the rest of her life. Her life was sad, but courageous one. She didn't give up, sit down and pine her life away for John Rainwater. Their oldest son, Chris was married and living in Arkansas. Jeanette had her belongings loaded in 2 covered wagons, took her children and joined a wagon train to join her son Chris in Arkansas. On the way, her baby girl, Mary Jane, grew ill and died. The wagon master stopped the train long enough to bury her by the roadside, then they moved on. As her children grew up and married, Jeanette would stay with first one, then the other of her children. She died at Chris Rainwater's house in Scott Co, Ark. This is how Mrs. Humble told it to me. Pa (Miles Rainwater) was living in Okla. then. One morning he said he felt like he ought to go see Ma (he called her Ma). So he got on his horseand rode about 25 miles over into Arkansas to where Chris lived. The cemetery there is over in a field and there was a burial in process. Pa knew everyone, so he decided he'd go over to the cemetery and see who they were putting away. And it was Grandma! They were letting her down (in the newly dug grave) when he got there. She died in the spring of 1918. If you have her birthdate right, she would have been 79 years old." [End of quote] ________________________________________________________ Regards, RG
Hi Lyle, Yes, I remember an exchange of email with you some time ago. And I probably have failed to get back to you. I am still not working on the Rainwaters per se, but have been working on the Leabo/Lebow lines because I have been found by some distant cousins who are also working on these lines and they tie in closely to my Moore line for which I have accepted a compiler job for my g-g-g-g-grandfather's line. When I get the file cleaned up, I will send you an update with more generations. I also have some data on the descendants of Daniel's other children. My "other" Lebo line is descended from John Lebo of Hawkins and Grainger Co., Tenn., whom I believe is possibly a brother of Daniel. His son Jacob W. Lebow took his family to Putnam Co., Ind., 1829-1836, then to Greene Co., Mo., 1836-1838, then in 1838 to the area became Lawrence Co., Mo., seven years later in 1845. Jeremiah and Lucinda (Rainwater) Leabo came here ca. 1870 and my g-gf Isaac Martin Lebow stayed and married in my home county of Lawrence. I have also been reminded that I used my old notes to say that John Nelson Rainwater was the son of Moses rather than James for which a case has been made. I don't know who his father was and shouldn't have used old theories. I haven't yet seen any original source document that identifies John's father. Having learned the hard way that family tradition, memories of past generations, and circumstantial evidence are not proof, I look for more evidence than that [for example, that my g-g-grandmother Lucinda Rainwater Leabo was Cherokee Indian and her father was Moses because he had females in his household her age in the 1840 census and was the only Rainwater in Ray Co. where she was married in 1846]. I hope this helps and we really need to keep in touch. I will need your help I am sure on Ashley Wynn and Rhoda's family. Fellow Rainwater researchers, I have been a subscriber from the beginning when the list was maintained privately without Rootsweb help. Although I have received all the messages, I have been working on other lines so I have not read and digested all of the material. I have been working on my Lebo/Leabo/Lebow ancestry lately because of contact made with distant cousins in that line. So I thought I would get back to the Rainwater group to see what anyone has on my line. I am Ross J Cameron, son of Bonnie Ruth Patton [and Wilburn Triece Cameron], daughter of Floy Verna Lebow [and Earl Henderson Patton], daughter of Isaac Martin Lebow [and Martha Alice Baugh], son of Lucinda Caroline Rainwater [and Jeremiah W. Leabo], daughter of John N. (apparently Nelson) Rainwater [and Barbara Emert], son of Moses Rainwater I have a lot of data on the descendants of Lucinda Caroline Rainwater and Jeremiah W. Leabo, though it is not complete. I also have some data on the descendants of other children of John N. and Barbara Rainwater: Enoch F., Angelina (mar. Artman), Charity Elizabeth C. (mar. Matthew Switzer). I have been told that John Berry Rainwater and Alexander Martin Rainwater are sons of John N. and Barbara Rainwater. According to the message below, they are not or may not be. However, there are other children listed below that I did not know about. Can anyone tell me what evidence there is for the children of John N. and Barbara Rainwater? I am particularly interested in the Jane Rainwater who married Isaac Leabo because Isaac is probably a relative of my Jeremiah. Jeremiah's sister Rhoda M. Rainwater was married to Ashley Wynn Rainwater, the son of James and Delilah Kiefer Rainwater, I also have some data on their descendants. I have appended a message from last year below with additional data on this line. As stated in that I also have a lot of records on the family of Moses Fowler Rainwater and Elizabeth Clay Oliver, whom I originally thought were Lucinda's parents. I was going to attach some other files I have on Rainwaters but instead will send them as separate messages. ********appended message begins here******** From: Ross Cameron To: NARA.INTERNET("schimmel@northlink.com"), NARA.INTE... Date: 3/23/98 2:54pm Subject: Rainwater Inquiry March #5 -Reply Dear L. Bedell, I have not been working on my Rainwater lines lately (since I moved last summer), however, I think I can identify the family you are inquiring about. I don't have all of my records easily accessible, but here is some information to get us started. Your Elizabeth C. Rainwater, born 10 May 1846, was Charity Elizabeth C. Rainwater, the sixth child of John N. Rainwater (ca. 1798, NC - 20 Oct 1867, Ray Co., Mo.) and Barbara (Emmett) Rainwater (ca. 1809, TN - ca. 1870s[?]). Incidentally, John and Barbara Rainwater's fourth child was my g-g-grandmother Lucinda Carolina Rainwater (3 Feb. 1831, [Sevier Co. ?], TN - 24 Jun 1905, Springfield, Greene Co., Mo.) who was married 27 May 1846 (just before her younger sister Elizabeth was born) in Ray Co., Mo., to Jeremiah W. Leabo ( 18 Aug 1826, Whitley Co., KY - 11 Mar 1893, Republic, Greene Co., Mo., served in Co. D., of the 6th Mo. St. Mil. Cav. during Civil War). In the 1850 Ray Co., Mo., census, Charity (shown as Carity E. C.), age 4, is listed with her parents, John, 52, and Barbara, 41, and her sister, Angelina, 14. In 1860, Charity (shown as Betty), age 14, is listed with her parents, Jno. W. (should be N.), 63, and Barbery, 51. In 1870, Barbary Rainwater (mother), 61, is in the household of Nan. Skidmore, 25 with Matt. Switzer, 24; Elizabeth Switzer (nee Rainwater), 24; Charles Z. Switzer, 3; and Corie (probably your Carrie), 1; John Artman, 12; and Barbery Artman, 14. Charity Elizabeth C. (Rainwater) Switzer's and Lucinda Carolina Rainwater) Leabo's other sister, the fifth child, was Angelina, who married an Artman, and the last two children in the 1870 census are probably hers though I don't have records handy to confirm this. I have not researched the Switzer nor Artman families very much. Incidentally, since you are probably interested in other Switzers, also in the 1870 Ray Co., census, there is an Allis (probably Alice) Switzer, age 14, living in the household of James Clark, 40; Catherine Clark, 33; John F. Rainwater, 13; Adam B. Rainwater, 11; four Clark children; and Robert F. Rainwater, 21. Catherine Clark was the recent widow of Enoch Rainwater, who was the older brother of Lucinda Caroline, Angelina, and Charity Elizabeth C. Rainwater. In 1860 Enoch, 31, is listed with Cate, 23; M. J., 6; Jno. F., 4; and A. B., 1. If my memory serves me right (since I don't have the records readily available) the maiden name of Catherine, Enoch's widow who married James Clark, was Remley. And in 1850, Enoch, 21, is in the household of Jere. Leabo, 24; Lucinda C., 18; and James D., 2. Allis Switzer, 14, might be a younger sister or other relative of Matthew. The Rainwater 1840-1920 Census Linkage chart for Missouri which I have started does not provide state of birth and I don't have the full census readily available to see if she was born in Ohio, too. Incidentally John N. Rainwater was probably the older brother of Moses Fowler Rainwater, a prominent Ray County pioneer, Methodist minister, farmer, surveyor (if my memory serves me right), etc., who married Elizabeth Clay Oliver, a cousin of Henry Clay the Great Compromiser. I also have a lot of information on Moses and Elizabeth and their family, primarily because I first thought Moses might be Lucinda's father since he was the only Rainwater in Ray Co. in the 1840 census (where Lucinda was married in 1846) and he had a daughter in her age bracket. Moses and Elizabeth had 10 children I believe, mostly daughters. Their son, Charles Cicero Rainwater, was a Major in the Confederate Army and a very prominent businessman in St. Louis after the war. I would be happy to exchange information with you so that I can add your line (if you are descended from Carrie as I presume you are) to my files. John N. Rainwater is presumed to be the son of Moses Rainwater (b. ca. 1770-1775, N. C.) Ross Cameron >>> Schimmel <Schimmel@aol.com> 03/21/98 07:26pm >>> Want info on Elizabeth C. I believe county seats may also be shown, but don't remember for sure. The software will also let you step through county boundary changes for a given state. They have a demo you can download free and try out - it is New York if remember correctly. I keep going back to look at their software, but so far I haven't ordered it. Ron Recer Edmond, OK

>From "THE FAMILY TREE" - January '96/February '96 issue p 7B Ah Hah! Born in Virginia? You only thought you were confused before. If a reference is made to a person having been born in VA as early as 1728 as to late 1863, it could mean the he was born in: any part of Illinois from 1781 to Statehood in 1818; any part of Indiana from 1781 to Statehood in 1816; any part of Kentucky from 1775 to Statehood in 1792; any part of Maryland from 1775 to Statehood in 1792; any part of North Carolina from 1728 to 1779; any part of Ohio from 1778 to Statehood in 1803; any part of Pennsylvania from 1752 to 1786; any part of Tennessee from 1760 to 1803; or all of West Virginia from 1769 to 1863. With thanks to "The Appleland Bulletin" and Florence Chadbourne.
Hi Gene, John S. Rainwater is John Sanford Rainwater with his first wife Lucinda Shehan. They were both born in Jefferson Co.,Tn. John Sanford R was the son of James and Catherine (McCall) Rainwater. James and 2 (or 3) of his sons moved to Crawford Co.,Ark;leaving Catherine, his wife, back in Jefferson Co.,Tn.That is the James who is age 60 in the household. John and Lucinda had 5 ch/ Lucinda died before 1857 (that's when he md his 2nd wife Isabell TYLER ALLEN. They had 8 ch. I believe the John and Elizabeth are John and Elizabeth (Morrison) Rainwater. The children would almost have to be their grand-children. I'm not sure yet without checking my files though. I just got in from Salt Lake and started reading my mail. Will get back to you after I've had a chance to check. KENTUCKY The Personnel of George Rogers Clark's Fort Jefferson and the Civilian Community of Clarksville [Kentucky], 1780- 1781 - Kenneth Charles Carstens. Until now, only 35 persons were thought to have occupied the frontier outpost known as Ft. Jefferson. Astonishingly, newly discovered records prove that more than 500 persons garrisoned, lived, farmed and died in that remote settlement. The book begins with a roster of names in the List of Companies. This is followed by the alphabetical List of Families. A chronological List of Deaths and a calendar of Fort Jefferson activities rounds out this section. The main portion of the book is made up of the Personnel section. It provides an alphabetical listing of every individual known either to have set foot in Fort Jefferson or to have had direct ties with the fort (such as sending items to the post or receiving correspondence from its inhabitants). The author is the director of the Murray State University anthropology program and the MSU Archaeology Service Center. The Fort Jefferson research project, of which this book is a part, involves the search for archaeological evidence of the fort as well as archival and historical studies directed toward reconstructing every facet of life associated with this late 18th-century Kentucky military and civilian frontier settlement. 1999, 188 pp., maps, fullname index, paper, $22.00 #C066 Pre-Publication Price: $20.00 till 31 May 1999 --- Heritage Books, Inc. 1540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD 20716 phone: 1-800-398-7709 fax: 1-800-276-1760 email: heritagebooks@pipeline.com Visit our online catalog at http://www.heritagebooks.com

Does anyone know if the Rainwater Family page has moved? I went to the URL I always use, which is: http://pages.prodigy.com/rainwater/researcher.html I received an error from Prodigy saying that this address does not, or no longer exists. Dan Bruce Dan
Annie Look at your NC map a little closer. Surry Co is removed from Sevier Co, TN by the Smoky Mountains and almost 200 miles of rugged terrain. Likewise for Johnston Co being far removed from Surry Co, NC. Remember it is over 650 miles from Murphy to Manteo!!!! The connection between the Rainwaters of Surry and Johnston Co are fairly well documented, but it seems that the Sevier and Franklin Co, TN Rainwaters came there from the upcountry of SC. Just some notes from someone who lives in Rowan Co, NC and not too far from Surry Co, NC. Don Pruitt
