    3. With information from Dan Bruce and Harold Irving, I have put together the following chart, which contains all the Miles Rainwaters given me to date. It is likely that they all start with James Rainwater and Nancy Miles. For the purpose of this exercise, I am going to assign this James the number 1. Their sons then are 1a, 1b, and 1c. Their sons in turn are 1a1, and so on. I am assigning the father of James the preacher (Benjamin?) the number 2, so the preacher becomes 2a. 1. James Rainwater (c. 1770-c.1835) m. Nancy Miles (c. 1775-c.1847) 1a. Miles Rainwater (1787-1826) m. Nancy Edwards (1788-1855) 1a1. Miles Rainwater (1815-1890) m. Sarah Edwards 1b. James Rainwater the blacksmith ( - ) m. 1b1. Miles Rainwater (1816- ) m. 1c. William Rainwater (1774-1825) m. 1c1. Miles Rainwater (1818-1887) m. 1c2. William Howard Rainwater (1814- ) m. 1c2a. John Raleigh Rainwater (1841-1910) m. 1c2a1. Miles Evan Rainwater (1863-1941) m. 1c2b. Miles Rainwater (1843-1927) m. 1c3. Bartholomew Rainwater ( - ) m. 1c3a. Miles Rainwater (1836- ) m. 1c3b. Josiah W. Rainwater(1843-1934) m. 1c3b1. Miles Rainwater (1876-1956) m. 2. Father of James the preacher 2a. James Rainwater the preacher ( - ) m. 2a1. Zebulon Miles Rainwater (ca. 1823) m. If indeed Miles, James, and William are children of James Rainwater and Nancy Miles, then all the Rainwaters I have so far with the first name Miles are their descendants. The son Zubulon of James the preacher had Miles as a middle name and could very likely have been named after the first Miles Rainwater, as Zebulon Miles was born ca. 1823 when Miles was in his prime as a minister. James the preacher was a younger man, likely Miles's first cousin, living in the same area and following in his footsteps as a minister. Thus it is quite appropriate that he would give a son a middle name after his cousin. Here are some questions. 1. Are there any other Miles Rainwaters you all can come up with? 2. Who was the wife of James the blacksmith, and do we have his dates of birth and death? 3. I had not previously seen the suggestion that William Rainwater also was a son of James and Nancy (Miles). With all his descendants named Miles, it is quite reasonable. Does anyone have proof or know the rationale? Sincerely, Joseph B. Lambert Joseph B. 2. On February 19, 1868, the Tennessee Legislature passed "An Act to Secure to the Loyal Citizens of Tennessee, Recompense from the United States Government, for losses incurred by the Rebellion." In the vault of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Dandridge, Tennessee, is a book in which is listed "Claims filed under Act of General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, Passed February 19th, 1868 for Jefferson County". In order to be repaid for their losses, the claimants had to prove their loyalty to the government of the United States by two witnesses. The Jefferson County, Tennessee Genealogy Society has transcribed, indexed and published the data in the claim book. The following relates to Milas W. Rainwater: date - May 11 claim number - 14 claimant - Rainwater, Milas W. town - Dandridge amount - $182.00 type - Rebel Account QM (probably Quarter Master) amount - $80.00 type - Rebel Account ComSup (?Commissary Supply?) approved - yes witness - Rinehart, Isaac witness - Webb, William In addition to the claim filed by Milas W. Rainwater, he witnessed several other claims as follows: date - May 11 claim number - 19 claimant - Webb Sarah date - May 11 claim number - 20 claimant - Henderson, John C date - May 11 claim number - 24 claimant - Hill, James S date - May 11 claim number - 25 claimant - Taff, William A date - May 11 claim number - 28 claimant - Taff, John H If anyone is interested in obtaining copies of the transcription done by the Jefferson County Historical Society, I can e-mail you scanned images of 4 pages. The pages consist of the cover, introduction and the two pages where Milas W. Rainwater's name appears. No other Rainwaters were listed in the index. Ron Recer Edmond, OK

    2. SUPPLEMENTAL OKLAHOMA HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY LESSON An 1895 map of Oklahoma (as well as most other states) is available at the following: http://www.livgenmi.com/1895.htm This map shows counties for Oklahoma Territory and Indian Nations for Indian Territory. Towns, military posts, railroads, rivers, etc., are also shown on the map. Oklahoma Territory (basically the western half of Oklahoma) consisted of the following: Beaver, Blaine, Canadian, Cleveland, Day, "D", "G", Garfield, Grant, Greer, "I", Kay, Kingfisher, Lincoln, Logan, Noble, Oklahoma, Pawnee, Payne, Pottawatomie, Roger Mills, Washita, Woods, and Woodward counties. In addition to the above counties three tracts of Indian lands were also in Oklahoma Territory as follows: 1) Kiowas, Comanches and Apaches 2) Osages 3) Kansas Indian Territory (basically the eastern half of Oklahoma) consisted of the following subdivisions: Semnoles, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Creeks, Cherokees, Quapaws, Peorias, Ottawas, Shawnees, Wyandottes and Senecas. Greer county may not have been officially part of Oklahoma Territory until the Supreme Court action of 1896, but map makes considered it a part of Oklahoma Territory in 1895 when the above referenced atlas was printed. By the way, to set the record straight the Okies in Greer County ran off the texans because they wore 10 gallon hats! ;-) Ron Recer Edmond, OK In a message dated 5/11/99 11:59:36 AM Central Daylight Time, schimmel@northlink.com writes: > YOUR OKLAHOMA HISTORY LESSON > by Myra Vanderpool Gormley <myravg@prodigy.net> > > > Between 1889 and 1907 what is now the State of Oklahoma was two > territories: Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory. 3. YOUR OKLAHOMA HISTORY LESSON by Myra Vanderpool Gormley <myravg@prodigy.net> Between 1889 and 1907 what is now the State of Oklahoma was two territories: Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory. Earlier, from 1886 to 1889, this area was all called Indian Territory. The OKIT pertains to political and land divisions, not tribal designations. Indian Territory (1889-1907) contained Cherokee Nation, Creek Nation, Choctaw Nation, Chickasaw Nation and Seminole Nation. Within these Nations were counties (just to confuse present-day researchers), many of which no longer exist. Oklahoma Territory in 1890 had the following Indian jurisdictions: Osage, Kaw (alias Kansas), Nez Perce, Ponca, Otoe and Missouri, Pawnee, Remnant of Cherokee Outlet [not part of the Cherokee Nation, but lands this nation sold to the U.S.], Iowa, Kickapoo, Sac and Fox, Pottawatomie, Cheyenne and Arapaho, Wichita, Kiowa, Comanche and Apache. Additionally there was the area (now the Oklahoma Panhandle) called "No Man's Land" but that was not a political division, simply an unassigned area of land. To add a bit more confusion to the political history, Texas organized an area in what's now the southwest corner of Oklahoma as Greer County. It was attached to Oklahoma following a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1896, when the Okies there refused to wear 10-gallon hats and be called Texans ....... (are you paying attention?).

Hi Leila - That War of 1812 listing was the first mention I'd ever seen of Edward and Newton, so sadly, I have no other information. What I can tell you is that Capt. McClellan's company was based in Pulaski Co., KY. Also, neither Edward or Newton appear in the 1810 or 1820 Kentucky census. I know they are not sons of William Rainwater, and had wondered if they might be the sons of the mysterious Abraham Rainwater who lived in Pulaski and Russell counties, but he either died with no will, or left Kentucky before 1840. By the 1870's both couples were located in Blount Co, AL along with Gabriel and Nancy Toney Rainwater. A McAfee family seems to have played a prominent role in the family's life at that time. Advise to look in Blount Co, AL(Oneonta is the CS). Believe you will find the marriage records there. I am all confused right now as it is late, will search some more and get back with you. 3. Hi Euni and all, You are sure right about the wind. We have a very windy Spring. For a few more weeks, then it will be gorgeous for a little while then, MONSOONS with thunder storms, outrageous sunsets and rainbows. my favorite time of the year here.. Hope everyone is gearing up for the family reunion at lake Texoma. Duane has put up a large ramada around the camp fire area. Donna has put a camp trailer on her lot. Lots are available if any one wants to purchase an individual lot adjoining the Hawk. Donna, butch (Pat's little brother <G>) and I have picked up adjoining lots. If anyone is interested, let me know and Duaine will send you the info. I'm going to put a small trailer on mine also. Our long rang plan is for family to pick up as many lots as possible, then rent them when we are not using them to earn monies for ;The Hawk'. We hope some of you are interested. it is such a beautiful place and many people like to vacation there. A wonderful boat marina and restaurant are 1 mile away. Boats are available to rent and the food at the marina is incredibly delicious. menu includes frog legs which Joe's sister Joanne thought were terrific little chicken legs. When we told her they were frog legs, her tastes changed quite quickly <G>. Uncle always liked going as he went fishing while we were there. My little Texas nieces took me to a very nice swimming beach in a small cove that was safe for them and fun for me. All Whitaker, Coiner, Brown, Lewallen, Rainwater, Coatney relatives are welcome as this land is a gift from Purna Mae Brown and James Aaron Whitaker for family get togethers. We hope someday to have a small museum/gift shop, in their honor, on the land. June 12 & 13 are the chosen dates for this reunion. hope to see as many of you as possible. love, Az's Singing Coyote.
