UNITED STATES. BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT. Searchable database. <http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/>
A couple of book announcements that pertain to the two States where Rainwater had its beginnings. Bob Schimmel NORTH CAROLINA Western North Carolina: A History, 1730-1913 - John Preston Arthur. This account of the creation of the state includes sections on Robert Love, founder of Waynesboro, and John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee. Public lands, Indian lands, land speculation and land grants are discussed. A section devoted to county histories includes brief sketches of prominent inhabitants, locations, significant buildings and a listing of principal office holders in the county. The chronicle of pioneer preachers includes excerpts from the 1800-1813 journal of Bishop Francis Asbury. A section on the Civil War includes prominent individuals, incidents, and touches on the Underground Railroad. Significant roads; manners and customs; the 1868 Asheville riot and "The Lineage of Lincoln's Real Mother"; judicial development, members, cases and rulings; education, newspapers, railroads, resorts, natural resources, geographic peculiarities, mines, the Cherokees, and political evolution are among the subjects addressed. Robinson. Virginia legislation created a total of 172 counties, but only 100 of them exist today. What is a genealogist to do? More than a valuable resource, this work explains the fascinating evolution of today's Virginia counties from the first plantations and "hundreds" which developed around the original Jamestown settlement. This handy reference volume gives reliable data in concise form concerning the dates of formation, the territory from which formed, and the origin of the names of the counties which have resulted from Virginia legislation--with references to the sources upon which these data are based and an enormous bibliography (more than 60 pages long!). The geographical section groups the counties into four divisions: Tidewater, Piedmont, Valley and Trans-Allegheny. The rather whimsically titled "genealogical" section shows how the counties all "descended" from the eight original "parent" shires and the "original county" of Northumberland. I hope this is the last time I am sending out this list. I have included a few more additions and corrections sent in by Rainwater correspondents. I am restricting the list to men named Rainwater who were born before 1900. They all go back to four people born around 1800 who named sons Miles Rainwater: Miles Rainwater (1787-1826), James Rainwater the blacksmith, James Rainwater the preacher, and William Rainwater (1774-1825). Admitting the unlikelihood that both Jameses had the same father, I separated out the preacher in my first list. Dan Bruce, however, thinks, with some reason, that the preacher, rather than the blacksmith, was the brother of the first Miles. I still think the reverse, particularly because Miles's estate contained some unusual blacksmith-related items for a preacher to have (Miles also was a minister, and James the preacher followed him in his church). Another reason is that the church records say that Miles was followed in the church by his cousin, not his brother. However, the same records gave Miles the wrong wife, so what can we believe? It would be nice if all the Miles Rainwaters descended from James Rainwater (c.1770-c.1835) and his wife Nancy Miles (c.1775-c.1847), as Nancy's last name appears to be the ultimate source of this first name. There were NO people named Miles in the Rainwater family prior to the marriage of James with Nancy Miles. However, both the James Rainwaters named sons Miles, and we have concluded that they were not brothers. At worst, one line of Mileses was named after an uncle-nephew relationship rather than father-son. Consequently, I am giving separate numbers to each of these four Miles progenitors. Their sons are designated by a number and a letter (1a), the next generation by a number, a letter, and a number (1a1), and so on. There are three isolated Miles Rainwaters. (1) Robert-William-James (1790-1871, m. Catherine McCall)-Milas W. (1816-1895, m. (1) Martha Profitt, (2) Elizabeth Dicky)-Miles Murphy (1864-1891, m. Hannay Rebecca Dandridge McAndrew). It is clear that this Miles drew his name from his father Milas and presumably had nothing to do with the Nancy Miles source. I am not sure of the accuracy of this line back to Robert. (2) Robert-John-John-John-William-Wilkes Berrywine-Miles Avery (1864-1925). This man occurs later, and the source of his name may be from distant cousins and ultimately Nancy Miles, or from an entirely unrelated source. Again, he does not seem to have relevance to the Nancy Miles source. Moreover, the name may be in error, as he is listed as Millidge A. Rainwater on the 1870 census but Miles in 1880. The name Miles may thus have been an elision or nickname. (3) The Stewart Co., TN, census of 1860 lists a John H. Rainwater (b. NC c.1804), wife Frances (Bird). Although some people list a son Miles Rainwater (b. c. 1846 for this couple, the name apparently is in error, as Wiley C.Rainwater, not Miles, was the son. We can disregard this group. Here then are the four men and their Miles descendants. I include everyone with the name Miles. Men with other names are included when they had a descendant named Miles. Again, I solicit comments, corrections, and additions. 1. Miles Rainwater (1787-1826) m. Nancy Edwards (1788-1855) 1a. Miles Rainwater (1815-1890) m. Sarah Edwards 1b. Hi Ross, I have Vol 3 of "Ray County Chapters" and it is third in a series of proposed volumes. It consists of articles edited by Jewel Mayes, beginning in 1930,which appeared every week for 10 years in the early Ray County,Mo newspaper know as the "Richmond Missourian".It says Mr. Mayes was the author of many of the articles as he challenged and encouraged his readers to supply him with information and recollections of early Ray Co. The response was overwhelming. The Ray Co. Genealogical Association is working to make this information available to the public. The reason I'm giving back-ground information is because there is a letter ,which was written 10 Dec 1928 by the widow of Charles C.Rainwater (Sarah Hannah Fowler). It was written to Mr Jewell Mayes. It appeared in the "Missourian on 16 Jul 1932". Robert Albert,Jr who published the "Rainwater Researcher" printed it in it's entirety in Vol 1 Issue !. Evidently he is a descendant as is Charles Rainwater Wollard in Ray Co,Mo. In the letter, she states where she was bn and when the family came into Mo. She also makes the statement "Shortly after becoming a member of the Rainwater family, father (Moses) said to me: "Daughter,I am not sure that you and Charlie have not committed a sin in getting married"." How is that?" I asked, and his reply was : My mother was a Fowler. To me that does not say that Moses' Fowler's and Sarah's are related in any way other than Sarah and Charlie's marriage.Sarah's family came from Calvert Co.,Md and Moses came from NC.Unless there is more information somewhere that will fill in the blanks. Moses Bible record is on film # 1697574-item 24.It's only 2 pages long. Hi, I am repeating my question from a month ago. I am looking for any information at all on Tom Rainwater probably from Oklahoma. He had a daughter named Marie Therese Rainwater (or Mary Jane Rainwater) who married Paul Donley. Paul Donley was born Jan 9, 1889, and died in March 1965. He is listed in the SSDI as last known address being in Phoenix, Arizona. If anyone can help me with these people, I would appreciate it. I appreciate all the info from the mailing list, but until I can get beyond these names, I do not know which direction to go next. Thank you. Susan, I have seen this before.  There is some detail about this in book on Rev Richard Phillips who married Delilah Rainwater by Eloise Groover Lovell. Should be in the GA Archives.  This is from something printed in the 1880s detailing the most prominent Baptist ministers during the first 40 years of the Southern Baptist Church.  It appeared in several of the annual minutes of the Hightower Association and the Chattahoochee Association and evenually in the BAPTIST LEADER. Mrs Lovell (now deceased) gives a good account of this in a chapter of her book and more can be found at the library at Mercer University in Macon, GA/  Believe both Job and James Rainwater were mentioned.  Of course, there were two James who were preachers of some renown.  JAMES AND JAMES E. RAINWATER.  James E. was the brother of my ggg- gf, GABRIEL RAINWATER.  They were the sons of LEVI RAINWATER. Hope I have been of some help. I have an old photocopy, made about 25 or 30 years ago from my husband's grandfather's files. It is a profile of James Rainwater (the preacher) and the page header says "Biographical Sketches of Prominent Baptists". There is no other information about the book or publication on the page. Can anyone tell me the title of the book, author or editor, and publication date? Most appreciated. scr _____________________________________ http://www.ncc.com/humans/scr/index.html http://www.chronography.com/index.html _____________________________________
If anyone has any information about this document, please let us all know. Thanks, Eunice << "Biographical Sketches of Prominent Baptists". >>

Hi, folks - This is to let you know that we've written a new filter for HTML messages on RootsWeb lists. Instead of bouncing all HTML messages as we've done for the last year or so, the new filter just converts the HTML to plain text. List admins don't have to do anything special; the filters are already enabled. This change ought to result in less mail getting bounced unnecessarily from your lists and fewer confused subscribers. I'd like to take this moment to acknowledge the important part that Netscape Communications played in developing this software. Were it not for their efforts to add HTML to e-mail, this work would never have been necessary in the first place. -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades
With considerable help from several people, particularly Susan Chance-Rainwater, here is the second take on the Miles Rainwaters of the world. I am restricting the list to people born before 1900. There are four people born around 1800 who named sons Miles Rainwater: Miles Rainwater (1787-1826), James Rainwater the blacksmith, James Rainwater the preacher, and William Rainwater (1774-1825). My biggest error in the first list was trying to make William (1774-1825) the brother of Miles and of James the blacksmith, by hoping that his birth year of 1774 was in error. The reason for trying to make them siblings is that it would be nice if all the Miles Rainwaters descended from James Rainwater (c.1770-c.1835) and his wife Nancy Miles (c.1775-c.1847), as Nancy's last name appears to be the ultimate source of this first name. There were NO people named Miles in the Rainwater family prior to the marriage of James with Nancy Miles. However, I already had Zebulon Miles Rainwater, son of James the preacher, left over, so that design was flawed from the start. William Rainwater, as it turns out, is the son of James and Catherine Anne (Regan) Rainwater and presumably the brother of James (husband of Nancy Miles). At worst, one line of Mileses was named after an uncle-nephew relationship rather than father-son. Consequently, in this second take I am giving separate numbers to each of these four Miles progenitors. Their sons would be designated by a number and a letter (1a), the next generation by a number, a letter, and a number (1a1), and so on. There are three isolated Miles Rainwaters. (1) Robert-William-James-Milas W. (1816-1895)-Miles Murphey. (3) The Stewart Co., TN, census of 1860 lists a John H. Rainwater (b. NC c. 1804), wife Frances (Bird), and son Miles Rainwater (b. c. 1846). I do not yet know where these people fit in, but it is possible that they are descendants of one of the four progenitors. Here then are the four men and their Miles descendants. I include everyone with the name Miles. Men with other names are included when that had a descendant named Miles. Again, I solicit comments, corrections, and additions. 1. Miles Rainwater (1787-1826) m. Nancy Edwards (1788-1855) 1a. Miles Rainwater (1815-1890) m. Sarah Edwards 1b. Silas Mercer Rainwater (1825-1902) m. Mary Jane Hindman 1b1. Miles Rainwater (1857-1911) m. Sarah Frances Allen 2. James Rainwater the blacksmith ( - ) m. Apposley Cunningham 2a. One interesting point is the presence of the name Eber in the lines of both James the blacksmith (his son 2b. Eber) and William (his great-grandson 3b1a. Miles Ever). Does anyone know where this unusual name comes from? Joseph B.
