    3. Hi, not my line but was cleaning the stacks of paper off my desk this morning and found the following letter to me from one Rosy White, Rt 2, Blakely, GA 31723..........will paraphrase: "I am trying to locate parents of Julia Rainwater b 1880-1883 Douglas Co., GA. She had a brother Sam Rainwater and they both married Strawn's who were brother and sister.....Sam married Susan Strawn 9 May 1897 Douglas Co., GA.....I found Julia in 1880 Census with Elhannon Rainwater enumerated as niece, this Elhannon was son of Miles Rainwater.........I have about concluded that she was out-of-wedlock dau of one of Miles' daughters......This Miles was a son to James and Apposley b Sept 10, 1818 in SC, then Elhannon son of Miles and Mary b Dec 4, 1849 Campbell Co., GA had sons: John, George, Sam, Dave, William, Frank, and two daughters Ora and Cora.....which incidentally Julia named one of her dau's Ora....On the white side my folks came in from SC thru Elbert GA. I was born Brazos Co, TX but born a Smith......signed Rosie." Interested, contact Rosie at above address I have no further data this family..... Hal

    3. Gildie and Larry, I am intrigued by your info on John Rainwater and his wife, Mary Cunningham. The reason for my interest is the presence of a Cunningham in the Rainwater clan. My direct ancestor is James Rainwater, referred to by fellow researchers as "the blacksmith". James was born around 1801 in SC, and his wife, Apposley, was born around 1802 in NC, and they were married between 1810 and 1820, location unknown. Apposley's maiden name is unknown, but believed by many to be "Cunningham", because of the presence in their household in Campbell County, GA in 1850 of one "William Cunningham", born around 1787 in New York, and a hatter by trade. I have no info on Apposley, and she appears to be a mystery to other researchers also. I have discovered little to conclude decisively who the father of James the Blacksmith was. The marriage between your John Rainwater and Mary Cunningham opens a new avenue to pursue and I was wondering if you had any info on Mary, or where and when she and John were married. Thanks. Hi Paula, Just a short note-Nancy is age 60 in 1850 and as you say she is in the home of her son Silas M.(he's not named in the final settlement papers for Miles in 1840-nor is he named in the sketch on Miles' background). Nancy, more than likely, is buried with the rest of her family in Wesley Chapel Methodist Church Cem,Fayette Co.,Ala in an un-marked grave. I'm sure the church is still in existence-why don't you write. I'm not sure how far back they keep their records or if they've already deposited them in the Methodist Archives. Will see if I can find the address for the Archives for you. Glidie

It is true that she could be Sarah (Sallie) Jane, and used the name Jane or was called Jane by her husband, John. 3. I was in error in my previous message when I said there was a problem with Miles as the son of John and Mary (Fussell) Rainwater. I meant that there was a problem with Miles as grandson of John and Mary. Most workers have him as the grandson of John and Susannah Rainwater and great-grandson of John and Mary (Fussell) Rainwater. I hasten to add that no one has proved the parentage of James, father of Miles. However, there is the problem I alluded to with John and Mary as father of the James who was the father of Miles. Mary was born circa 1708 and would have been in her 60s when James father of Miles was born. That fits better with Mary as grandmother, not mother. James the father of Miles was still alive for the census in 1830, so he could not have been born circa 1736, as you have below. Although John and Mary did have a son James, presumably born circa 1736, that man is not the father of Miles but probably his great uncle. The more likely father is James son of John and Susannah and grandson of John and Mary, but that is not certain. Joseph B. In my line, it was Rainwaters, until our Grandfather joined the Army Air Corp. He went in as a Rainwaters, and soon became a Rainwater. Guess maybe the "S" was too confusing for the US Gov. Although, his old SS card shows Rainwaters, the SS info on the Internet shows Rainwater.....When his son was born, they listed Rainwater on his birth certificate. So, we are actually the second generation of Rainwater. Within our own family group, we have both, Rainwater and Rainwaters. I agree that it was either how people heard it or how they wrote it down. 3. Glidie-- The source of the misinformation about Sallie Hutchinson as the wife of Miles Rainwater was the Newells' History of Fayette County. A lot of people in Alabama have access to that book and have perpetuated the error. However, this was another case of misidentification. The Newells eventually put Sallie with the right husband, but I do not recall who it was. Could you please send me a copy of the original of the William Edwards estate (1956 Linneman St., Glenview, IL 60025)? I have not seen it before. Which county is it in? I suspect that there is a comma missing, and that would clear up the William vs. Isaac as the father of Nancy. The list of William's children (Elizabeth, Nancy, Enoch, William, Isaac, Newman, Georgia) from the Bible and the list of heirs in the settlement would be nearly the same if the latter read as follows: William (eldest living son), Millie (wife), heirs of Isaac (deceased son; indeed, Isaac was born Jan. 5, 1798, and died Oct. 7, 1830, according to the Bible, and this settlement was in 1836), Nancy (daughter, wife of Miles Rainwater), George (Georgia), and Newman. Apparently Enoch died without issue. I don't understand what happened to Elizabeth, wife of John Yarbrough. She died in 1873. By the way, the wife of Isaac (son of William and brother of Nancy) according to the Bible was Frances Divine, agreeing with the settlement that lists Francis as guardian of the heirs of Isaac. The Isaac married to Frances Divine, however, was born in 1798 and could not be the father of Nancy the wife of Miles Rainwater, as she was born in 1788. Moreover, the Nancy Rainwater in this settlement could not be the heir of Isaac Edwards AND a minor needing a guardian. Our Nancy Edwards Rainwater in 1836 was 48 years old and definitely did not need a guardian. It makes more sense that Nancy, George, and Newman were heirs of William, not Isaac. We need to look at that original. Joseph B. Lambert >A short note on Rev. Miles of SC. 3. I want to make a comment on this name because his name was not!!!!! John Solomon R. This was put on the family group sheet by the same person who put Bobo as Susannah's surname in the book "My Family". A lot of her data was assumed-but not documented. I have researched Solomon very thoroughly and in all kind of documents and nowhere do I find the name John Solomon. I've found him as Solomon-nothing more. The IGI and Ancestral File should be used as a guideline only!!!!. Do not take the data as documented proof. Use it, yes-but do your own documentation. A lot of the data submitted is supposedly from "family knowledge" and we all know how faulty that can be, don't we. I mean-we try to follow family tradition, and use what is passed down to us as the real thing; but again, information gets distorted and other things are added in over a period of time, that the information at the end bears little resemblance to what it was when it started out. I hope I don't make anyone mad, but there is already enough supposition in researching this line of ours-Rainwater. Burned courthouses are just one of the obstacles we face-don't put any more in our way. Glidie

    3. The land Levi had in Illinois was "bounty land" which he drew as payment for service in the War of 1812. Patent # 18903. The deed record was in Cherokee Co.,Ga where Gabriel and the rest were living on 7 Apr 1856 when the deed was filed. It also said they were the heirs of Levi and Elizabeth-so this is giving the name of his wife. Glidie
