Hello everyone, Just been listening and reading all the mail and responses since we went on Rootsweb. I had previously been in touch with a few of you, namely Bob Schimmel, but had never made a good connection with my line. My Rainwater bunch ended up in Searcy Co., AR coming originally out of New York and Illinois by way of a few mid-south states. Vida Rainwater is as far back as I have been able to go. I won't go into my linage right now, but if it sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know. I would also like to know where the Arkansas Reunion is held that Ron spoke about. Also Joseph Lambert, how long have you been at Northwestern U.? I had a brother-in-law that was a professor there for many years, but left several years ago. Thanks, Winnie Bell Bentonville, AR
Watch out for that apostrophe. In this context it signifies possession, not plurality. Rainwater is a single, proper noun. Rainwaters is the plural of that noun ("All the Rainwaters came home."). The apostrophe is used only for possession, as in "Miles Rainwater's house," and, in the plural, the "Rainwaters' house." When Rainwaters is the actual name, the plural becomes Rainwaterses, the singular possessive Rainwaters's and the plural possessive Rainwaterses'. See p. 159-162 of The Chicago Manual of Style, 13th edition. Although Rainwater as the singular would occasion no exceptions to these rules, Rainwaters as the singular could, as many experts accept shortened forms, like Rainwaters', for the singular possessive. Hi to all the Cuz's.......Just read a post from Ron in which he mentioned a Rainwater Reunion in Arkansas......Wish to add to that the Annual Rainwater Reunion at Somerset, Pulaski, KY which is held on the third saturday in August each year at the Pulaski County Park......The Park has a number of covered "Shelters" and may change from shelter to shelter as reservations are made each year........Hosted by a group of my actual First Cousins, the reunion normall draws about 250 people from at least 22 states.......Sort of a hometown "potluck" but if from out of state they will accept things like chips/dip, canned goods, store bought salads etc......or soft drinks...Ohhhh, BTW Pulaski is a dry County and is unlawful to have the hard stuff in the park......... Hope some of you may attend in future years. I will post next years calendar of events during the summer.......... My '98 reunion notice: "We just about blew it this year, our brains left our bodies, but never you fear. When preparing the reunion we missed one small thing, To call for a Shelter, for our big August fling. But never you worry and please don't fret, Cause we've got Shelter #7 and now we're all set. It will still be mid August and right about noon, On the 15th Day and that's pretty soon. So, pack up your baskets and fill them with food, Come with your pictures and a really good mood. We can't wait to see you at the Pulaski County Park, We'll have fun just talking and visitin' 'till dark. So God grant you safety as you head out our way, from the Rainwater girls, Alice, Susie, Vina, and Faye." Neat Huh???? Hal from sunny Northern California!

Ron That Lightfoot Name should have been one word My spell check opened it into two words and I did not catch it. Len
Ron. You are correct again I have also seen it as Rain Waters. A lot depended on how the census takers wrote it down. I have had arguments with them over the spelling back in 1940 It was as though they had all the knowledge and everyone else was wrong.. The same went on with our friends the Light foot Family. Hi Mary Ann, Sorry to be so late but I've had a flare-up of my Lupus and I've been real sick for 3 days. Not feeling to good today-but too many things to do. My line of Rainwater was William Rainwater who married Elizabeth Lucas on 2 Nov 1823 in Marengo Co.,Ala. They had 3 sons-Richard, John R. and Elkaney L. I'm descended from John R. I have information on all 3, though. Hopefully, I'll eventually find someone doing research on my line. I've been doing research close to 45 years now and have accumulated quite a bit of Rainwater data, trying to sort out families. I'm slowly building a data base on my computer so that I can pull them up when I need them. Now-Pinkney Ferron Rainwater was bn 16 Oct 1811 in Anderson Co.,SC.
