No It is not known 2who the parents of Anthony Rains,b.1757, are. His records state that he came to Randolph County with his mother, some say in 1772, no roof on date. He married Nancy Graham. One of their siblings was Henry Rains .b.5Sept. 1797. He had more sibling but can't find their names. I will tho if imporant. Are you a decendent of Anthony, if so we are cousins abt. 4th 0r 5th . Tell me exactly what you need, But can't give parents. Everone has a theory of the Randolph Rains. But they can not prove. Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com

Dear Jan, I am just getting started on research in Randolph NC on the Rains line. However, I thought I would let you know what I have on a John Rains who we believe was from Randolph NC. I can't said for sure that I am entirely correct on all of this, but here is what I have at this point in time. John Rains, b. 1772 in NC (probably Randolph Co.) I have no name for his first wife. He remarried later in life while living in Ray County, MO. His sister, Elizabeth Catherine Rains, b. 22 May 1775 in Randolph Co., NC married Richard C. Craven in 1797 in Randolph Co., NC. The Rains and Craven families were closely associated with one another and both John and his sister and her husband and many of the Cravens and Rains children all moved to Campbell Co., TN (about 1808) and on to Ray County, Missouri (about 1830). The children I have for John Rains and his first wife, name unknown, are: Martha Rains m. Jeremiah Craven in Ray Co. MO Elias Rains m. Jane Gray in Sumner Co. TN James Rains m. Rachel Vanderpool in Ray Co. MO George Rains m. Jane Sharp in Campbell Co., TN (my line) Caswell Rains m. Martha Queener in Ray Co., MO Calvin Rains--No information (may not have been a son) Elias, James, and Caswell MIGHT have returned to TN--no information on this idea. I cannot guarantee the complete validity of this information, but it is what I have gleaned from several sources. I do know that Martha's family stayed in Ray County, MO, and George Rains eventually went to Bates County, MO. Does any of this fit with your findings? I'm especially interested in another Robert Rains from Warren CoTN. He was born about 1828, d 1862. In 1860 he was living in Granby, Newton Co MO with his sister Martha 'Polly' Rains Price, her husband Richard C. Price and family. He died intestate but there are probate records for this estate. His heirs included Calvin, Loyd, Drucilia & Mary Jane Price children of Polly Rains and Richard Price. Thomas Rains (brother to Robert) was also an heir. He purchased the land (the old home place which had belonged to James and Elizabeth Jackson Rains, parents of Polly, Robert and Thomas among others). Would like to hear from other of this line. Hi, the answer is yes, they are the children of Joab Rains. My line is of the older son James, by his first marriage, who moved on to Marion Co., IN., before 1830, where he raised a second family. Have more info on my line but lost out on a few of them. Know where the most of the died and have visited their graves. Do you have information to share on this family, would be glad to hear from you and share with you. Could this be any of the Rains that were in Warren Co Tn in the early 1800's?
For those Rains researchers, I also have two George Medlins. One was the son of Meredith Raines (Rains) and find him as a child in the house of Meredith in the 1850 census for Pulaski County, VA. Then in 1880 I find my George W. Raines (Rains) whom I descend from as a child in the home of his father Napoleon Bonaparte Raines(Rains) . Napoleon was the son of Meredith as was the first George Medlin above in Pulaski County, VA. The George W. Raines was the grandson of Meredith. George W. Rains, son of Napoleon was born in Sunflower Co., Mississippi however. I have located Napoleon later in his life in Missouri where he died. Napoleon was in the Civil War and in Jackson's regiments. He was also in the battle of Appamatox and was there when Jackson signed off. I hope to find other researchers who are looking for these same people. If any of you also have Robert Raines (Rains) I am interested as my George named one of his sons Robert. There was two brothers of George. One James and one Claude. Have yet to link them any where. They were born around the 1890 census year. Only a family bible to tell me anything. I hope someone can help me fit this puzzle together. Thanks. Sue Knudsen in Tucson, AZ Suzanne ("Sue") Knudsen
Delores after a few thoughts this Robert could be the son of Robert who is believed to be one of the five Rains men who came to Randolph Co., N.C. in 1772 and if so he was on the Census of that County in 1790 with as many children as his father. You might take a look at him. I guess though he might have been to young at that time to be having that many children. Just another Robert I'll keep looking at more Robert's. Delores, would this Robert be the son of George Rains born about 1778 who moved from Randolph Co., N.C. to Caney Branch in Tennessee. Is there anyone who can recognize this: Meredith Raines (Rains) married to Alice Miller, 14 May, 1833, Montgomery, VA. Meredith and ALice I believe had a son named Napoleon B. Raines (Rains). I am researching this family for my mother. I also am wondering where would Montgomery, VA be located in 1833? I cannot access internet to search. Thanks. I just read an email that suggests that Robert Rains in Randolph Co. 1810 Census and gone in 1820 is a great possibility for my 2nd great grandfather. He is however taxed in 1815, so would think he didn't die until after then. If any one that might know anything about this Robert would kindly get back to me, I would greatly appreciate it. Who he was married to, his children , parents, etc. Thank you. Mary masdal@ala.net -
