Although we are confident that RAINS is the spelling used by our ancestors, there is that one or two who also, on occasion, used RAINES in writing his name -- or even one time, REINS, which appears on one of the Muster Cards from his Civil War records, which was written by someone else. Just to show that the RAINS family joined many others in spelling their name in various ways, we now know, through the kindness of a fellow family researcher, that our John RAINS (b. abt 1808, NC) married Unity BAILEY, d/o John BAILEY (d. abt 1831). In John BAILEY's will, that last name is not only spelled BAILEY, but BALEY, BALY, and BAYLEY as well. We would like to further document the connection of our John RAINS (b. 1870 MS)>Oliver RAINS (b. 1840 AL)>John RAINS (b. abt 1808 NC)>Oliver RAINS (b. 1774 NC)>Oliver RAINS (b. 1740? NC)>Henry RAINS (b. abt 1715)>Henry RAINS (b. before 1865 England). If anyone has about the same line, would enjoy trading info. Peggy
Dear Roberta, I don't know if this will be any help to you or not but my grandfather, Earnest Wiley Rains, was born in Lawrence Co., Mo. on 4-27-1889 and died on 9-7-1928 in Webb City, Mo. (Jasper Co.). Earnest (also spelled Ernest) had a brother named William, born in Taney Co., Mo., on 1-1-1880 and died on 8-2-1915 in Webb City, Mo. This William was only 35 years of age at time of death and is listed on his death certificate as being single. They are both buried in the family plot in Oronogo Cemetery in the Oronogo community outside of Webb City. Their death certificates list John W. Rains as their father who was born in the state of Indiana. Their mother's name was Dora Griffith born in state of Missouri. No county was listed for either parent. John W. Rains of Oklahoma was listed as a survivor, alone with two sisters Anna Rains Eubanks of Oklahoma and Eva Rains Reader of Oklahoma, at the time of my grandfather's death in 1928. I have been unable to find any information on John and Dora Rains, their births (other than states), where and when they died or place of their burials. I don't know if this will be of any help to you or if there is any relationship to your line of the family. If anyone can shed any light on this please let me know. Have watched with some amusement about the recent Raines postings as I too had decided there were no fathers to many of the Raines families. My Raines were in KY, moved to IN and supposedly to MO but they just fell off the face of the earth. Have found no records in MO. Allen and William Raines and at least two sisters moved from Harrodsburg, KY through Frankfort, KY to Sullivan Co., ,IN in 1826. They remained in IN until 1870's and just disappear. According to an article written in 1930's, they moved on to Sedalia, MO after 1860 but have found nothing on them in MO. If you happen to have any information on Raines family members that could be related to mine, would be very happy to hear from you. They are very elusive to me and must be to others. Well Vergil, You hit the nail right on the head!!! They could not read or write!! A William Raines was my 2nd great grandfathers trusted and loyal friend in Randolph Co. N.C. Now who was this William Raines? He witnessed nearly every land transaction my family made until 1812. He had to be at least 21 in 1800 to put his name on anything! Nobody seems to have a William who was born before 1879 or so, but there was one there! I have a copy of every land transaction that Jacob and Henry Leonard made while living in Randolph Co. My Leonards and those R.C.N.C. Raines were TIGHT! And of course my great grandad, Henry married Patsey Raines b. 1795. I will be asking the same thing Vergil! But you know what? I can only find one set of 2nd great grands and back on my dads side. I can only find the Brewers line to take me beyond 1763. Now I can find my Brewers, buddy!! They are all out there in plain view! with Patricks, Millikins, Joyners! But my other connecting lines such as Leonard 1763, Walkers 1840, Clarks 1840 and Raines 1795 is it!! I can go no farther back! We might just as well laugh and hee haw about these Raines. We probably will never find their fathers! I believe our NC, Randolph C., Rains were A little bit retarded, none of them knew who their father was. Well at least I had a 2nd cousin who got my line,Lawrence, back to Randolph Co. When I see my dear old 4-ggf up above , I am going to say" Who the h___ is your dad" O-well I can laugh abt. it all. Vergil Raines. Well one thing is for sure . We are cousins. My 4-ggf was Lawrence of Randolph Co.,NC. I will search my notes and see if I can help you. Vwergil Rain(e)s
Count me in as another STUCK Rains researcher. I'm stuck at my ggg grandfather's birth at 1804. He, Gallant Rains, was born 1804 in NC or SC (depending on which record you're looking at) then moved to Knox County KY when he was a child. That portion of Knox Co. became a portion of Whitley County KY in about 1820. There were three Rains men in the Knox/Whitley Co. area that are possibles for his father, John, Thomas or Jonathan Rains. John died in Whitley Co. in 1825, Thomas migrated to IN before 1820, and I have no clue what happened to Jonathan. My guess is that Gallant's father was John, because Gallant named his first-born son John. But, alas, no proof yet.
