    2. Hi Cousins, Seems there are several of us that descend from James and Sarah Jackson Rains. I do not have James' siblings otherthan Asahel nor their parents. I have no proof that Levinia and Katy Duncan were sisters and daughters of Joe and Nellie Duncan . Do any of you? I haven't worked on the Rains' lines in quite a while and need to get my folder out and refresh my memory. Liz

    3. Do you know if Levinia Duncan was the sister of 'Katy' Duncan, mother of James Spencer Emory Rains and George Raleigh Rains? Lots of George's in this family. Your Sarah had a brother George Washington Rains who went to Texas before 1850 and started the first funeral home in Marshall. 3. Hi, I'm Robert Raines and I connect to this family also. These people left Randolph Co., N.C. and came to what they called the Caney Branch, which is a fork into a larger river. The major town they lived in was McMinnville. Mostly when they first settled it was just Warren Co., but like all other areas it grew. You will find this town about half way between Nashville and Chattanooga. ----- Original Message ----- From: bellsouth <jagg@bellsouth.net> To: <RAINS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2001 6:11 PM Subject: Re: [RAINS] another Robert Rains in Warren Co TN > dear cousin, > james and elizabeth jackson rains are my grandparents also, i cant locate > info from warren co cant even find out what town that was dont lose my name > we need to talk i think you have some very very important info for me good > to hear from a direct line > cousin > suzanne rains kelly > savannah, georgia > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Jan Holloway <janmmh@sirius.com> > To: <RAINS-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2001 1:31 PM > Subject: [RAINS] another Robert Rains in Warren Co TN > > > > I'm especially interested in another Robert Rains from Warren CoTN. 3. The TN civil war veterans questionnaire of William Alexander Wilkins, he states for answer to question number 44 concerning ancestry: George Washington Graves and Charlotte Rains Graves were born, raised, and married near Charlotte, NC. moved to Giles Co (TN) and then to Decatur Co (TN). I have no idea as to parentage for Charlotte. George and Charlotte are in Perry (Decatur) Co by 1830. The widow of Anthony Rains and his children of Randolph Co, NC are in Perry co by 1840. Charlotte and George name a son Balaam - a name used by Anthony Rains for a son, BUT Charlotte is not named in Pension app of Anthony's widow ! I have not been able to put George with a Graves family either ! Anyone have a Charlotte born 1785 in NC that went missing ? 1. [RAINS] Hi
    2. Margie Goodwin
    3. Mabry.... I have Ancestors from Wilkes and Elbert County Georgia, no Rains though. Have researched there. Elbert County was made from Wilkes. Alot of people from Virginia and N.C. migrated there. There was a large wagon making company there about 1810. Their also famous for their blue rock quarry. My Ancestors fought for the "Goshen Blues" their in the Civil War. Here's some Rains marriages I found in my KING papers for Elbert County I thought I'd post in case it helps anyone:: CATHERINE RAINE- BRYANT MASON 12-5-1816.... MARTHA RAINES-DEMSEY BROWN- 1-11-1820.... JOHN W. RAINES- LUCINDA HICKS 12-18-1828... JOSIAH RAINES- SARA DENNY 4-5-1832.. ( Last one is Wilkes County ) JOHN RAINES- NANCY S. GIDDENS 3-6-1828. There's a book called the History of Elbert County by a man named MacIntosh, it didnt have my Ancestor in it but you may find something out about yours. Theres a nice man at the Elbert County Website who has the book and will do free look-ups.

    3. Vergil, Were you replying to my post to you or some one else? I hope it was for me and that you will have something to report to me soon! I really hae a delemia with my Daddy Raines. He is suppoedly only to have 5 children. John b. 1765 d. 1845 m. Margaret Dula 1785 in S.C. I can't seem to locate birthdates today, but these are the other children; Susannah, Mary (Polly), Lewellen, and Patsey (Martha) b. 1795 d. 1860 m. Henry Leonard. Now my delemia. John b. 1765 to my Patsey b. 1795 ----30 years ---5 children., and there is none other listed in N.C. as of 1845 when John died. Now, I have a William for 100 Randolph Co., N.C. AND, I truly believe this is my family. 2 males 16 and up --- This could be my Lewellen and John 1 male 26 and up --- This is William(Daddy) 3 females under 10 --- This could be Susannah, Mary (Polly) and Martha (Patsey) (could one of these have died? or a grandchild? uh huh!! 1 female 16 and up--- 1 female 26 and up ---This is Mama. What I really believe is that John's birthdate is a mistake. I think it should read 1785 instead of 1765! But, who is this William??? Nobody can put their finger on this guy!! Does any one out there have data on this fella? I need this Raines!! This would also jack his birthdate up to 1760+. Who was he married to? When did he die and where? Lewellen was already dead in 1845 and his children were heirs of John, his brother that died intestate, without issue 1845 Any help appreciated! 3. How lucky you are to have a daddy for your John Rains! Most of us cannot find daddys for our ancestor born around that time. I believe if I could find Patsey Raines daddy (she was b. 1795 Randolph Co. N.C.) after hunting him for 27 years, I would throw a party and invite ALL RAINS/ RAINS/ REINS/ REINES RAYNES (and any other way we find to spell it!). You are so lucky. So, in the meantime, While you are out there searching for your Henry, if you find an old North Carolinian born abt. 1744-45 anywhere and he is hunting for his 2nd great grandaughter named Mary, please tell him where to find me. He misses me!! Love and hope to allau cousins! 3. I have an Olivia Rains dau of Nancy who married in 1786 Henry Gatewood in Amherst Co Va. They names oneof their sons Ignatius Raines Gatewood. Looking in Amherst Co records: the only Raines in 1787 tax/census list in Amherst Co is Ignatius Raines. 1783. Ignatius Rains, tax list, 10 whites, 3 blacks 1786-91 Amherst Co tax lists 1776 Ignatius Rains buys 150 acres from Joseph Dillard in Amherst Co. 1784 Ignatious Rains 7 wife Nanny sell 150 ac to Jacob Kinnedy 1785 Ignatius Rains buys 260 acres from Wm Duval in Amherst Co. 1790. Ignatius Rains & wife Ann sell 2 tracts to Jacob Kinney no more after that 1795. Ignatius Rains, grant of 200 ac in Wilkes Co, Georgia. I have not had time to check out more Georgia records for land & probate. Since Dabney Rains named a son Ignatius, I bet that he is the son of Ignatius. Mabry Benson

    3. I found a Rowland Raine who came to Virginia as a Head-Right from England about 1631 but I havent conected him to my Rowland yet. I think all the Rains were in Virginia before the territory was opened for migration. I saw your Dabney on GENFORUM. You should check the SITE out. Arent you relate to EUCLID RAINS who died recently? He lived up your way. He was completly blind and use to drive a car down country roads by hisself. Thats what the newspaper said. The site list Daneys father as Edmund Muscoe Rains. If you go to the Rains Message Board theres alot more info on Dabney Rains.  Dabney Rains b 1788 Va Posted by: Arnold Horton WilsonDate: February 21, 1999 at 05:17:43 of 777 Dabney Rains was born in VA (probably Amherst Co) in 1788. His father apparently died when Dabney was an infant. Dabney married Barbara White, dau of Nicholas White, probably in Elbert Co Ga. They had 11 children. They were: John W, Josiah Francis, Ignacius, Mary, Rains, Willis H, Hulda, Powell S, Elizabeth A, Almedia and Henry. Dabney died at Martling or Asbury, Marshall, Alabama on 18 Mar 1860. Barbara died there also. They were buried in the Martling Cemetery. After the death of Dabney's father, Elizabeth married John T Dudley. They had 4 children. They were: Ignatius, James L, Wiley and Mary Ann. Mary Ann married Isaac Green Mitchell and they were the g grandparents of Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell, author of GONE WITH THE WIND. Will share info on the Rains or Dudleys or Mitchells. http://genforum.genealogy.com/rains/messages/169.html

I'm stuck with Dabney Rains, as far as determining who his father was and where Dabney originated from. He first shows up in Virginia as being born in 1788 and then coming through Georgia. He ended up settling and dying in Marshall Co. AL in 1860. Jill Watters Rains Gadsden, AL

    2. I also can not get beyond 1815. I have a Rowzee (various spellings) Raines also spelled Rains born 1815 and died 2-26-1895. His wife was Rebecca Payne. Before her he was married to a Harriett. I believe they stayed in the Stafford VA area. Rowzee had A LOT of children. I hope I don't forget any: With Harriett and listed on 1850 census: John M. William Benjamin Agnes A Jane E Rebecca now listed on the 1860 census new children are: James E Valentine Eustace Mason Alexander Susanna (this is the only one I think is Rebecca's) 1870 census: Mary William Charles T. 1880 census: Norman Lissie Addie Ellis Turner Henry 1900 census Elwood Hugh I told you there were a lot! Ellis was born about 1871 and was a merchant. He married Alice Payne or Virginia Alice Payne. Her father was Charles Payne. Ellis and Alice had three boys: Arthur Delmore, Richard Wayland, and Grafton P. Anyone with any info please let me know. I can't find anything about Ellis. After those census he seems to fall off the face of the earth. I know he exsisted because my husband is from his son Arthur. Hope everyone has more luck than I do!! :)
