AMEN, MARY Virgil is like taking a fresh breath of air and releaving the pressure we have been holding in for many years. My sentiments exactly Vergil! Don't you dare! We will get a posse of Raines together and come to Palestine after you!! LOL!! You are not safe from this "hongry for information" Raines bunch! I sure enjoyed reading this particular volume pertaining to the old raines research, however I always like to know what states and countires an individual is speaking of . Could you clarify this for me please as I have just started my research on a Meredith Raines in VA in 1800s. Pulaski and Montgomery County, VA. Anyone related? Sure would like to share information. I can be found at susieknu1@aol.com and knudsen@pocketmail.com Suzanne ("Sue") Knudsen

Vergil, "DON'T STOP THE INFORMATION" I have learned more about the Rains, etc spellings, in the last few days than I had ever dreamed of learning. I have been searching now for 4 years and I really love all the information. It gives me insight as how they traveled, names I never heard of, and many more details that I may be able to use in researching. Thanks for all your hard work. All those notes you have that you had thought about publishing, and never got around to it. If I can help you type them up, I would be glad to at no cost to you. I am keeping everything that comes through on the Rains. dee baxter60@aol.com wrote: > Does anyone need the material I'm sending? If not I will stop. Just thought > it might give someone a lead. Well Sue I've met another cousin. My 4-ggf was Lawrence,b.1751/52. Lived in Randolph Co. until abt. 1805 then to Ohio. Good to talk to you. Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com
In " Marriages of Early Virginans" it states that Samual married before 1729, Hagen Davis, daugther of John Davis whose will of that date, Lancaster Co. ,proves it. Samual Rains Another Robert Rains from "Cavaliers & Pioneers, Abstracts of Virgina Land Patents and Grants, Volume 3" it states that Roberet arrived from England in 1723. He sold his 50 acres for transportation with a group of others October 28,1723. This land was in King & Queen County, Drysdale Parish. I'm sure other Rains arrivied by ship , this is just all I found. Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com
Another John Rains was mentioned from the same sources, in a land sale stated as " Mr. Thomas Jefferson, Tho. Harris, Matthew Branch, and Tho. Turpin, 628 acres in Henrico County on North Side of James River 20 October 1704, beginning on branch of Lucy's Spring. Transportation of 13 persons ". John Rains was one of thirteen. Next p. 6
Does anyone need the material I'm sending? If not I will stop. Just thought it might give someone a lead. After all abt. 80% of the Raines in US started in Virgina. We were there before old George was even a thought in his Dad's mine.( Washington that is ) Ha! Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com
Mary do not get hung up in Randolph Co. Remember it went under other names until 1779. I wish I could get with you and show you my 10 yrs. of notes. Wrote it all down in a book one time, but never published, couldn't anyway as I always needed to add more stuff. I do wish I could get all of it out. Just so some people would have the info., O-well one of these days.
Renea, On the 1790 Census ypo left off George and Mary. The first info I found other than the census was George who signed the Regulators letter in 1768 of Orange County. This part of Orange Co. later in abt. 1779 became Randolph Co. John and George were Loyalist in the RW, also William and James. Ishmael and Lawrence were different tha the others to me. Lawrence ,My 4-ggf was a Quaker and very anti-slavery. In fact he moved to Ohio in abt. 1805 just to get away from it. Other Rains in Randolph Co. did own slaves. Mary is the big mystery, so say she is the mother of Anthony. Who knows. I could tell you something abt. each of these Rains. Ask exactly as I do not know what you need. Baxter60@aol.com
Liz, As best I can find out George died there also and after his death Asahel lived in his home. It is hard to separate out these children after they went to Tn., but the last of them went TN, and some not liking it there moved on. Some settled in Ohio and then IN. while others went west. Vergil, Yes! Please continue your postings. My 3-grgrandfather was Gallant Rains born 1804 in NC (according to a Sonoma County California homestead affadavit signed by Gallant). I haven't been able to prove who his parents were, but his father was one of the Rains men who were in Knox/Whitley Co. KY in the early 1800s. Those Rains men were John b. circa 1785(who I think a likely candidate for Gallant's father since Gallant named his first son John), Thomas, and Jonathan Rains. Too bad for us researchers there were so many John Rains!! I've been reading all of your posts hoping to make a connection someplace. I, for one, appreciate all of the research that you are making available to those of us still trying to make connections. It's invaluable!! Keep it coming! Mary, am I correct: You know that John, Lewellen, Susannah, Patsey, and Polly are siblings because of a court record. This was due to a John dying intestate. Was this the John above, the sibling? My family consisted of 5 children that are mentioned. John and Lewellen the only boys and Susannah, Patsey(Martha) and Polly (Mary). I have the court records of John's intestate estate. William in 1800 had 2 males 16 and up, and 3 females under 10 , 1 female 16 and up, along with himself and wife. I just get more confused as the days go by. If the 1790 William is mine, what happened to all the other kids? John b. abt 1785, Susanah b. abt. 1787-88, Lewellen b. abt. 1790 , Mary b. abt. 1792 and Patsey was b. 1795 The 1790 William would have had to be born when? My figuring would have him born in abt 1740-45. Too old for my William, I think. He was probably born about 1862, I would guess as he was having children at the same time as my Jacob Leonard b. 1763. Yes Vergil, I noticed the 2 Roberts 1790. Who are they? Did you say? Can't actually put them with William, Huh! Oh well, you would think after searching and hunting for William for 27 years that I would not be so impatient for bits and pieces to come my way would you!! LOL! I am in Alabama, Vergil, in the Southeast corner, Houston Co., Dothan. There is a lot of N.C. information in our library, but not that much on Rains. I have been in contact with the research librarian in Randolph Co. N.C for over a year, and she could not come up with my parents for my Patsey. She sent me all kinds of stuff from the research room. The only notable thing I recieved on my Rains was when her brother John Rains died intestate and they all had to divide the estate. I got a lot of information there. I got all of Lewellens kids names and their spouses as they were heirs of John because Lewellen had already died. (I have no death date for Lewellen). If I could get to RCNC, I would find what I needed, as I have gone into libraries and courthouses here and found data that folks said was not there. I may have had to make several trips to get all I wanted, but I got it just the same. Its just spending time and not giving up and looking through everything! Not all courthouses have their data in the same books etc. such as marriage, death, wills, orphaned children, discharges, military records, Journals and don't forget Misc. I found this to be true right here in Al. The courthouse records are not all the same.
