Thanks, Bob. I should have explained that this was not my line -- I just wanted to pass the info along to those who wanted it. Have scanned it and will send to those who are interested. It does tell about his Rev. Newman Rains, son of John R. and Kezia Rains, was born about 1754 in Cameron Parish, Fairfax Co., Va. He was mentioned in his father's will in 1754 in Fairfax Co. This will mentions Newman and Baley as sons by his wife, Kezia. Anthony and John Rains were mentioned, but their mother's name was not given. Kezia was expecting a child when this will was written. Newman and his mother, Kezia, were in Bedford Co., Va. as early as 1792, when Newman Reins' boundary line was mentioned in a will of Cornelius Dabney, dated May 23, 1792. One of the witnesses was Keziah Reins. I am trying to determine the maiden name of Keziah Reins/Rains. Some say she was a Dabney, and since she witnessed the will of Cornelius Dabney in Bedford Co., I am looking into this possibility. Do any of you out there have any information on this Reins/Rains/Dabney connection? Eva Alford
Peggy, This John is the son of either Robert or Ishmael Rains, Can't remember which but somewhere I have read about it and probably still have that information some where. He was called Capt. John and came to Randolph with his father. He served in the War from Randolph then returned to Virginia where he married and then went to Tennessee. He never established his own residence in Randolph so you will probably find no information from there. Now David Fanning, now just bare with me a minute, was an American Loyalist and Guerrilla fighter born in Beech Swamp, Amelia Co.,Virgina abt. 1755. After being robbed by some men calling Themselves Patriots (Whigs), Fanning joined the Loyalist side in the American Revolution in 1775 and gathered a small band of guerillas for "hit and run" expeditions against the Patriots of NC. He gained a reputation for extreme cruelty. In July 1781 he was made a colonel of milita by the British in NC. next p.4 . But now must go to bed as my wife has me redoing this house. John Rains,b.1759, lived in Randolph Co.,NC for a period of time. His kin to the rest of the Rains is not known by me. Yes, he returned to Virgina and married Letitia_____. Some say she was Indian. John and Letitia then proceeded to populate abt. 1/2 of Tenn. and then filled up Arkansas. This John was very prolific or at least by those who claim kin to him. I do not know , at hand, all the names of his children. I will not have to look it up because your E-mail is fixing to fill up. The Verg
The NC geographic, ethnic, economics, social, religious, and political difference produced an enduring east-west sectionalism. The government was dominated by the east, and the backcounty inhabitants suffered from excessive taxes, dishonest officials, and exorbitant fees. The " Regulators " was born in backcounty NC, yes Randolph Co., to regulate the evils of Gonernment. Now doesn't that set you up for the " Rest of the Story " page 3 next
You know we all like to find our ancesters, but have you every wondered just how or what our forefathers hadto face polictically. Nc came under the rule of a Royal Governor in 1729. Government improved and settlers started to pour into the colony. Between 1730 & 1775 the frontier was pushed westward to the Blue Ridge. The Rains we know, the 1750's,came to NC abt. 1763,according to my figures,Anthony at a later date, thus we lived in the true back country. End of p. 1 The Verg

Mary, did not mean to stear you wrong. The Randolph Co. that most of the Rains were in was called other counties at one time. Example is that Orange Co. include Rand. at one time. Rains married into Chatham Co. & etc. When you are doing research what you are looking for may have actually been in Orange Co. I say the Raines were in or came to the area of Rand. in 1762/63. Others say 1772/73. All I meant was do not limit yourself checked Counties around Rand. Does this make any since. The Verg

Yes, I know it wasn't always Rand. Co. BUT, what do you mean "don't get hung up on Rand. Co.?"
