    1. [RAINS] Re:They Get Around
    2. Melva Wheelwright
    3. As to Rains getting around, one group came (we think) from KY to MO, formed a wagon train and went to CA (Gallant Rains) where instead of digging for gold, they created farms right here where I live in Sonoma County CA. One of this man's relations-- probably his brother--we don't know--started Rancho Cukamonga in Southern CA and from what locales tell me, they used to visit each other once a year. These folks really got around! 2. Cat, if it starts with an R and ends with an S, that spells Raines to Reins to Rynes. Personally I like Raynes. Vergil Raines. My Grandfather was born Warren Rains. Running from ex-wifes he crossed the Red River and changed it to Alfred Warren Raines. So never give up.

    3. Catherine, My Raines spelled their names Raynes only after they left North Carolina. The only way I have seen William Raines (am hoping he is my Patsey's father) name signed in N.C. is Raines. We must remember that he did not "sign" per se anything, as he could not read or write as he signed with an "X", so I am sure he did not recogonize his name when he saw it. My uncle Ed, born 1872 is the person that wrote down all the family history that included Raynes. That is the way he spelled it, but I truly think it was not supposed to be spelled that way. He had a sister that was named Mary Raynes Leonard, (for Patsey), so she had to carry the name spelled that way. A lot of people that were in Alabama went on to Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. A lot of times, Alabama was just a stopping off place to rest or work long enough to go on west. Have you looked for your folks other places? I cannot remember seeing your posting, so do not know who you are looking for. I live in Alabama and there are still a lot of Rain(e)s here. Don't give up, as there are just too many unclaimed Raines still floating around out here. 3. Well, Mr Vergil, You get rested up from taking those tires off that new home, and get back to us soon! Wanted to let you know that my Patsey (Martha) Rains b. 1795 in R.C.N.C., married abt. 1810, my great grandfather, Henry Leonard b. 1789 R.C.N.C., to Jacob and Rebecca Brewer Leonard. They had several children there and in 1829 migrated to Indiana, and had several more children (probably some on the way too). In 1849 they started their migration into Iowa and are in the 1850 Wapello County, Iowa census. I just happened to marry an Alabamian in 1951, and here "I" is!! I always knew even as a kid, that my heart was in the South. At that time, I didn't know where my folks came from, except that a grandmother was born in Kentucky, but my heart knew. ( NORTH CAROLINA and All places South!!) After John died in 1845, and all his estate settled, I understand that Lewellens kids also went West and North to Indiana . Debi Boswick will have that data so I am told. Maybe you will want to chime in here Debi? Mary masdal@ala.net --

    1. [RAINS] From Vergil Raines
    2. I've been on this site abt .two months and boy have I learned a lot. I knew the Rains had Tenn. covered, Kentucky a little, Ohio and VA. pretty well. But boy I never realized how many possible cousins are in Alabama. I had always thought Alabama was covered with Rains of VA. south of the James River. However, it does make since that a lot of Tenn. Rains fell off down to Alabama. Many , Many, NC randolph Co. Rains moved over into Tenn. and many on down to Alabama I now find out. My own direct line moved to Ohio and then West across the top of this great country. I've received a lot of E-mail and I shall ans. all with time. Love you all Vergil Rain(e)s Baxter60@aol.com

    2. As I ended last night, I believe I said I was tired, boy today I'm really Tired. I have this rich next door friend, and he ask me to help him today move into his new home, so I went over and boy we like to have never got those six tires off that sucker. Speaking of that when we first moved up from Houston we moved into this new house. It ha 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a small kitchen and really a small living area. It seemed nice to us. I did have to change the plastic wall on the south side a couple of times. However, we had lived there abt. 6 years and up pulled this big truck. I ask " Hey what do you want". He said." I have brought the rest of your house as it has been back ordered abt. 6 years". We had no idea what he was talking abt; however, he parked it right beside our house. It fit just right giving us 1 more bedroom, a really big kitchen and a living area so that we have room for both chairs. What a deal. next p. 10 really

    3. The volume of mail on this list has been wonderful! In our zeal to find our ancestors, let's not forget common courtesy. If someone places info on the list, it is in the hopes of helping someone on the list or of finding a connection and /or more information for themselves. Please do not forward or cut/copy/paste information submitted by someone else to another list or individual UNLESS you have first asked and gotten permission from the original submitter. In most cases it will not matter and the original submitter will be glad to have a new contact that may have common ancestors. Sometimes it does matter and common coutesy demands that we respect that person's wishes! Keep the info flowing, perhaps someone will break through that brick wall! 3. There is a John who married a Keziah but does NOT fit your description because of the marriage date of Keziah being 1761 which is after Newman was born 1754 unless he was s/o first wife??. Nevertheless, this may be of interest to you. Cpt John Raine b 5 July 1726 of Goochland s/o George Raine b bef 1706 of Henrico and mother Mary Shelton of Rural Plains, VA. John married first Susannah Mitchel d/o Archelaus and Ann Mitchell and had (come debate on which children from her) Eliz. 26 Oct 1755, Nathaniel 4 Dec 1757, Mary Ann 21 May 1760 Wife 2 was Keziah Anderson Cocke d/o Chas & Eliz Chambers Cocke, widow of Thomas Cocke (See Douglas Register, Some Virginia Marriages) md 23 Dec 1761 John jr., Mary Anne?, George, Chas Anderson, Wm, Thos, Joseph Shelton, some say another daughter was Sarah Gwen Hancock Interesting Dabney connection is Dabney Rains b 1788 VA who moved to Elbert GA. Said his father died "early." Dabney's mother was Eliz. She later married John T. Dudley. His sisters were Martha and Catherine.
