    3. Gee, I see all these John Rains from NC, but none of them mine! Here is what I have on this one. John Rains b. 1772 North Carolina (wife unknown) Children: Martha b. 2 January 1804 Randolph Co., NC m. Jeremiah Craven Elias b. Abt 1805 Probably Randolph Co, NC m. Jane Gray 1830 TN [At this point, they moved to Campbell Co., TN] James b. Abt 1809 Campbell Co., TN m. Rachel Vanderpool 1835 MO George b. 24 October 1812 Campbell Co., TN m. Jane Sharp abt 1828 MO Caswell b. 1816 Campbell Co., TN m. Martha Queener 1840 MO Sometime between 1830-1835 we believe that most of the above went to Ray County, MO, accompanied by the Craven family and others. John's sister was Elizabeth Catherine Rains b. 22 May 1775 NC. She married Richard C. Craven 15 June 1797 in NC. They also went to Ray County, MO. We believe the Randolph Co., NC, Campbell Co., TN, and Ray Co., MO locations to be correct, but we don't have any documents at this time to prove them except Ray Co., MO. Do these look familiar to anyone? We have no idea as to the parents of this John Rains. Kay Winter

    2. Preston, not knowing just how much you have looked for some of the history into Alsey Raines can I ask a Question or two. In the 1790 census there is a Enuch Rains listed. There also Rains in Cumberland,Anson,Johnston,Hyde,Duplin and Wake Counties. Of course Randolph Co. which I claim. All my search was prior to 1806 in Randolph so I can't help there. Good Luck vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com

    2. Can anyone link my Alsey Raines to their family? He was born in 1806 in NC or Va. He might be related to some of the Raines in Johnston County, NC. He married Charlotte Kelley 12/15/1830 in Wake County, NC. His children were Middy Ann, Jasper J, Nancy Helen, Lucy Ann, L. Nicholas, Nichodemus C, Alexander and Adolphus. Do some of these name have a German flavor to them or is it just me? Thanks in advance! Preston

    3. Melva, No, the time wouldn't be right for Gallant to visit his grandson John in So. CA. Gallant died in 1883, and John Rains didn't go to the vets' home there until after 1900. The thing that's made me wonder about the Gallant Rains and Cucamonga John Rains connection is that that John Rains was murdered in 1862...only a couple of years after Gallant came to Sonoma County. And that John Rains was 25 years younger than Gallant (he died when he was 33 years old according to historical accounts), a few years younger than Gallant's son John. I'd love to find a connection that could be documented, though, because it would certainly add color to my family tree!! 2. Melva, the Raines group that I speak of was the very 1st group that I eliminatedas beening part of my line. This John had been previously married and I could never find who she was. Amy had also previously been married and best I remember ha 4 sons by that marriage. Yes I have the Mitchell's history. This whole group of Rains & etc have been will researched. They were one of the few Rains groups not starting as indentured servants. Its my Rains group North of the James that I have trouble with. I want to know with all my heart who my 5- great grandfather was. He's there but who. Nice talking to youand take care, we might be cousins, I claim all until I'm proven different. Bye The Verg

    3. Hi Melva, You are definitely right on when you say that these guys really got around!! Regarding Gallant Rains descendants visiting the John Rains in So. CA, I recently learned that Gallant Rains' son John Rains had a son John (by his first wife Eliza/Louisa Pettyjohn) who died in So. CA in 1922 at a veterans' home. I have a copy of his pension file which names his brother George W. Rains (by John Rains' second wife Sarah Jane Plummer) as his next of kin. Anyway, thought it might be possible that this could be the John Rains that the Sonoma County Rains visited on an annual basis rather than the Rancho Cucamunga John Rains who died rather early on, if my memory serves me correctly. 2. Melva, in one of your notes you state: Cpt. John Raine b. 5Julu 1726 of Goochland s/o George Raine b. 1706 of Henrico &etc. John married 1st Susannah Mitchel & etc. I'm confused as my records show prepared by Dr. Thomas Hart Raines who was an early member of the Virgina Genealogy Society says that John Raines b. 6 July., 1726 s/o Thomas Raines and Elizabeth married Amy G. Mitchell b.31 August., 1732. They had 3 sons and one daugther. This was all in Bristol Parish, Prince George County. Thomas Hart Raines biggest concern was that his Raines not get mixed up with what he called Cullpepper (sp) Raines. Do you see the simulairities? Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com

    3. The John of whom I quoted from the Douglas Register did marry Susannah. Do you have the lineage of the Mitchell's? I don't want to type that up unless I need to. You can see on their genealogy chart where Amy and Susannah come in. I think, however, that the date for John on the currently circulating family group sheet is likely to be wrong birth date for the one who married Susannah. I am glad you noticed because I was up too late when I looked that up and didn't note the two duplicates. It would be nice to get that straight. I'll go check with THR report tomorrow and see what he has. However, there are some errors in his info so he isn't what I would consider a primary source either. melva baxter60@aol.com wrote: > Melva, in one of your notes you state: Cpt.
