    3. I haven't been able to connect the George Rains in this biography to my Ranes family but maybe someone else can. My Ranes is William Ranes, b. ca. 1796 in VA or in what is now WVA. He is found in Allen Co., Ohio by 1834. His wife was Elizabeth Thomas. Sue History of Ross and Highland Co. Ohio" pub. 1880, page 525. "George Rains came, early in life from Randolph County, North Carolina to the State of Tenn. and from there in 1816, to paint Township, where he purchased a large tract of land, including the site of the present town of Rainsborough, for one dollar and twenty-five cents per acre. He lived, in the enjoyment of a well earned prosperty, to the good old age of 76 years and left at his death(which occurred Jul 10, 1845) a large family. He was twice married, and had 12 children. Nine by his first and three by his second wife. Of these, the following are still living; Catharine, wife of james Grady, lived near Rainsborough; Sarah, wife of John Cooper; Aaron lives near Marshall; Hannah C., wife of Nelson Taylor; Ishmael, living in Indiana, and Mary, wife of John Marsh."

    3. Eva, Thanks for posting this will. There are many folks who are stating that John and Anthony are brothers in the Rains family who went to Randolph Co., N.C. I think this does away with that theory because in 1772 the Anthony who went with his family to Randolph was 15 years of age and was from Caroline Co., N.C. So we now have another Anthony and another John. Thank you for this information. 2. Vergil, you have a lot of questions, and the only way I have to try to answer them is through Katherine's book, or through the genealogical library in Norfolk. My problem with the Raines line is who are Newman Raines' children, son of John R. Ranes and Keziah (thought to be a Dabney) . Also, I am looking for Kezia's parents. So far, no luck on that. Eva

    2. DR, I agree with you, but that was a new twist. Also if killed who is on 1790 census. That John had grown sons and no children. That is the 1st time where his death is mentioned and I've never saw where he was in that particular battle. He was in the Guilford Courthouse Battle along with William. Is that the same as Greensboro Battle? Appreciate your comments. Vergil Raines

    1. [RAINS] Anthony Rains
    2. Eva, I did not get John's Will, but if the Anthony you mentioned who married in 1789 is the one on John's Will then my question is answered. My Anthony is the one in Randolph Co. However, I need help on the 1750-1763 Randolph Co. Rains. They are Ishmael,b.1749,Lawrence,b.1751,George,b.1753,John,b.1755,Robert,b.1757,Anthony ,b.1755/57,John,b.1759,Robert,b.1763,Isaac,Leonard,William,James and Mary. These are mentioned on 1787 TaxList or 1790 Census or on the list of Tories of Randolph Co. or those recruited into Patriot Armies. I know that Lawrence is my 4g-gf and I know that Ishmael is his brother. Possibly Robertb.1757 is also their brother. I know that Johnb.1759 and Anthonyb.1755/57 were in the Patriot Army. Both Anthony and John said they were from Caroline Co.,VA. These folks were all in Randolph Co. at one time. My problem is the relationship if any of these Rains. There is another Robert misc 1729. Any help I can receive on these Rains would be appreciated. I have (assumed) that all were brothers, but now I do not. Some say that Henry the Planter of Caroline Co. is the father, others say that a Robert Sr. is at least Ishmael's father. I say no one can provide proof. This I do know Henry of Caroline Co. is not the father. Well that's my problem , but that is what makes it fun. Ha! Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com Thanks so much

    2. I don't think Major John Rains, the Tory, was killed at Hillsboro. I believe, from reading the memoirs of David Fanning, that Major John Rains suvived the War. Colonel Fanning sought reimbursement for Major John Rains, for his property losses, from the King after the War was over.

    2. Vergil, here is more: I quote: "There were 3 early John Rains in North Carolina. The John Rains who served in the Cont. Line during the Rev. War received Land Grant No. 5 in 1782, for 640 acres on Brown Creek on Cumberland River. By 1790, he was gone from North Carolina. It appears he later settled in West Virginia. There was a Major John Rains who lived in North Carolina on Brush Creek. He was a Tory to the King of England. This John Rains was a follower of David Fanning, a leader of the Tories. . . . . . .on Sept. 12, 1781, Major John Rains was killed during the battle of Hillsboro.. . . . . . .Jarvis, Reuben, Ephriam (heirs), John (heirs), and Anthony Rains received land grants for their Rev. War services. All of these men had served under Capt. Bond." (End of quote.) Again, this may not be of help to you, but one never knows. Eva

    2. Vergil, Anthony Raines and Mildred Burk married in Prince Edward Co. on Feb. 16, 1789. Don't know if this has any connection to your Anthony or not. I quote from Katherine Raines' book: "Anthony Rains was born about 1755, in Caroline Co., Va. He died in Randolph Co., N.C. on March 25, 1837. He stated in his Rev. War Pension application that he moved with his family from Virginia to North Carolina in 1770. The John Rains who married Letitia Patton told about the same story in his pension application, therefore, it is believed that Anthony and this John Rains were brothers. Anthony was married in North Carolina on March 2, 1787, to Nancy Graham, who was born July 10, 1760. Nancy was living in Perry Co., Tn. in 1840, when she applied for a widow's pension. She died in Perry Co., Tennessee in 1841. Anthony was living in Randolph Co., N.C. when he entered the Rev. war in March, 1781. He listed his age as 77 in 1832. 1. John Rains b. Dec. 8, 1786 2. Isaac Rains b. June 6, 1787 3. Elizabeth Rains, b. Sept. 20, 1789 4. Rebecca Rains b. Jan. 12, 1792 5. Jean Rains b. Mar. 31, 1794 6. Mary Rains b. June 14, 1796 7. Hannah Rains , Dec. 27, 1798-Sept. 16, 1827, married Charles Steed. 8. Balaam Rains b. Sept. 17, 1801 in N.C. and died May 15, 1881 in Decater Co., Tn. He married Matilda Hudson Marc. 21, 1812-June 11, 1891." (end of quote) Don't know if this has any bearing on your Anthony or not, but here it is for what it is worth. Did the John R. Ranes will come through that I sent? Eva
