    3. Any help getting started on this line will be appreciated. My great-grandfather was Thomas W. Rains. Supposedly born (1859), lived and died (1933) in Collin Co., TX. He was married to Susan Maetta Burton Dec. 20, 1880 in McKinney, TX. I've written for his death certificate, but that's as far as I've gotten. Wading through the tax and census rolls of Collin Co. is difficult without more information. Would love to correspond with other Rains relatives. I've got tons on my Burtons to share if anyone is interested. Thanks. 3. For those of you who haven't seen it, there is a short bio of Emory RAINS on the RAINS COUNTY site at: http://www.rainscounty.org/rcohist/emyrains/index.html and additional information about him at: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/RR/fra17.html About two weeks ago, the RAINS COUNTY newspaper had an article about him, with his picture, on their Looking Back page. If anyone wants a copy, I will be glad to scan it and e-mail to them. Peggy Horton Marshall, TX. 2. Caroline, I notice in my notes that Matilda Cox b.8/15/1839 m. Harrison Cox 12/9/1857. What was the prior relationship if any. I noticed this long ago, but had no one to question, just assumed it was a mistake. I've talked to other cousins, but you are one of the few that can go back to Lawrence,b.1751/52. So it is really good to talk to you. I've looked for the father of Lawrence so long I truly feel that I know him. Have you ever seen any leads in that direction? Are you still in Neb. as Matilda started out. Shout back sometimes. Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com I am only a 2nd generation Texan

    3. This William is likely to be the one who was of Columbia Township in Randolph b Aug 1793-24 Jan 1864, buried Holly Spring Friends Meeting Cemetery. He is thought to be s/o Robert and Hannah. (I have no knowledge of this). According the Encyclopedia of American Quakers Genealogy, Vol 1 NC, SC, TN, VA p. 470 which covers Holly Springs of Randolph, it states that William was accepted in the Quaker Friends group there in 1842 (20 Aug) and made Elder 1853. He was married to Amelia "Milly" Parks b 15 Dec 1798 who died 13 Apr 1876, buried parks Crossroads Christian Church Cem. They had a dau. America who married Orren C. Siler 29 Aug 1842. She died bef 1876. Another daughter was Caroline. These two daughters were named in his will. Wm and Milly gave land to Oren Siler in 1855. Wm is said to live at one time on Millstone Creek, Randolph, NC and appears to be related to old Robert Rains of Randolph. Randolph Estate Records said Milly left her things to grandchildren Siler. baxter60@aol.com wrote: > Mary, Here is another William Rains ,b.9/2/1793 d.1/24/1864. He was born in > Randolph Co. 1. Re: [RAINS] Roland Raines
    2. Melva Wheelwright
    3. As to why you wrote Accomack by the name Roland, I can shed a bit on light on that. 1. a headright record in the Passenger/Immigration books by Filby it named a Roland Rains 1636 headright to Accomack. 2. In the misc court records of Accomack p. 162 an inventory to the estate of a Roland Rains in 1639. Appears that the estate may have included 200 acres in No. Hampton, "a neck of land lately in the possession of Rowland Rains." 3. The name appears in VA Colonial Abstracts also. In the court records the name appeared in misc events from 1635-37. 4. One strange item was that a Mr. Wheatley was accused of abusing a Roland and a Tomasin Raines--dates of records not clear--1632-7. This is perplexing as in the immigration papers we can read of Rowland or Roland and a Thomasin(a) coming over--the latter being his wife. Another record said she was his servant. ?? 5. in VA Cav & Pioneers for date 18 May 1637 there was a Roland named with a purchase of 1300 acres New Norfolk east of the Nansemond River. Melva Wheelwright baxter60@aol.com wrote: > Someone was asking about Roland, I can't remember who, and this is what I > found in notes. 3. R8561 states ( 2 affadavits) that soldier William Rains had served with his brother Henry Rains. William Rains m. Anna "Nancy" Williams on 5 Jan 1792 in Spotsylvania Co VA, soldier died in Mar 1810. Soldier lived in Caroline Co., Va at enlistment. Widow Nancy or Anna applied 1843 Spotsylvania Co., VA. I have a copy of the abstract of this pension file R8561 but not a copy of the original file. There is a pension file S313317 for a Henry Rains, who lived in Spotsylvania Co., VA at enlistment. He applied in 1832 in Hardin Co., KY. No children's names or wife's name is given. He may be the possible Henry Rains who was the brother of William. 2. In a message dated 5/7/2001 6:27 AM CDT, RAINS-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << Does anybody know who this William is? I am very interested. Cleve, do you know when this Henry Jr. and this William was born? Thanks for any information. Mary masdal@graceba.net **************************************************************************** "Rains researcher, Gary Raines, made a statement several years ago that Henry Rains, Sr. of Caroline Co. had another son, William. However William was not mentioned in the will. The pension application of William Rains, R-8561, reportedly identifies William as a brother to Henry Rains, Jr. of Hardin Co., Kentucky, born in Caroline Co., Va." >> Hello Mary, I do not know the age of either. I only know they were old enough to have fought in the Revolution. On the maximum age end, Henry Rains, Sr. was old enough to be buying land in 1716. So either could have been born roughly from 1716 to 1767. I have never seen this petition but I it may very well have given William's age. Cleve
