    2. Renea
    3. Wading through all my Rains "bits and pieces" and trying to put together. I have a copy of the original will of Ishmael Rains. He lists son John - George and Ambrose "when they come of age" - wife Sarah. He also makes the statement "all the children", does that imply unnamed? Executors are brother Laurence and son George ( an executor, but "not of age"? ) Dated 17 Dec 1790 witnesses: Robert Reins, Laurence Raines, and George Raines proved in court June 1791 1. Ishmael is still alive in 1790, but I did not see him on index listing. Is he there and I missed, really on census and got overlooked for index, or truly not on census? 2. 1790 Randolph Co, NC Hillsborough District lists a George and a John. Are these the children of Ishmael ? Did not find Ambrose, anyone know where he was? 3. Laurance is also on same 1790, brother of Ishmael? 4. Were these 3 the only children of Ishmael? 1. [RAINS] Identity of Ignatius Rains in Caroline & Amherst Counties?
    2. Hello Mabrey, I have looked at the Caroline Co. Rainses pretty closely and have found no other Ignatius Rainses there or elsewhere in this era, other than the one in Amherst County. So I agree that it is highly probable that they are the same person. I think it is better to continue to make this identification in terms of probabilities for the time being. I agree that Nanny Rains, Ann Rains would both appear to be the same person as and Nancy Rains who gave consent for Olivia's marriage especially since Olivia (Rains) Gatewood named a son Ignatius Rains Gatewood. However, does the mother giving consent suggest to you that the father may have already been dead and that the Ignatius Rains and wife Ann selling land in Amherst County in 1790 and the Ignatius of Georgia in 1795 may have been Ignatius Rains, Jr.? Thanks, Cleve

Do you know who Ignatius married? Her name was Ann or Nancy from Amherst Co deeds. Who were his children - I only have Olivia who married 1786 Henry Gatewood. (She named a son Ignatius Rains Gatewood.) >> Hello Mabry, Would you tell us how you identify Ignatius Rains of Caroline Co., son of Henry, who still acquiring land in Caroline Co. in 1768 as the same Ignatius Rains who first appears in Amherst Co. in 1776? Would you mind telling us how do you identify Olivia Raines as the daughter of Ignatius? Thanks, Cleve Weathers

    3. Olivia Rains married Amherst Co 1786 Henry Gatewood, Nancy Rains gave permission. They named a son Ignatius Rains Gatewood. In Amherst Co tax lists the only Rains during that period was Ignatius Rains. From Amherst deeds Ignatius had a wife Nannie/Ann. All that is sufficient that Ignatius is probably Olivia's father. Is this the same Ignatius from Caroline Co? I would think probably. The name is not at all common. I have not yet gone through Caroline records to see what and when, to see if there are overlaps or multiples, but with an unusual name like that one, I would place the probability high, though be open to the possiblilty multiple ones. If his name had been Henry of John, I would say who knows. Mabry Benson

    3. I did see the mention of Henry Sr's will in the Rains archives. Do you know who Ignatius married? Her name was Ann or Nancy from Amherst Co deeds. Who were his children - I only have Olivia who married 1786 Henry Gatewood. (She named a son Ignatius Rains Gatewood.) Who the rest of his children were? Did he leave a will in Georgia? I would be glad for basically anything, as I have not had a chance to really look for info since I decided that he most likely is her father. I only tracked him on Amherst Co tax lists 1783-91. But no other Rains in the county. Then I ran out of time. Thank you for any help. Mabry Benson

    1. [RAINS] Descendants of James and Elizabeth Jackson Rains
    2. Jan Holloway
    3. The following list shows -- to the best of my current understanding -- the children of James and Elizabeth Jackson Rains. Some believe there were ten of them but no descendant seems to know all the names. My particular problems relates to my gggggrandmother Martha Rains Price. There are records showing both Martha and Polly married to a Richard Price. Were there two sisters, Martha and Polly who married the same man or perhaps two men with the same name? OR were they one and the same, that is, Martha Rains called Polly? Hope someone can shed light on this question. As always with the genealogy I dig out, this is a work in progress, so don't repost it without asking me first. You may be propagating errors! 2.
