Heather, I emailed the Middlesboro Newspaper asking for information as to who is really responsible for the upkeep of the Hensley Cemetery and to please contact me as to the distruction in the cemetery, the dirt bike riders, the parties, etc that is going on there. As of yet, I have not had a reply from them, and somehow, I really don't expect one. I guess they don't want the story. If there is anyway possible, please help me inform all the Marsee Researchers and maybe we can get together and stop the distruction and posssibly find a way to force a fence, relocation of graves, and markers, and find a way to fund the maintenance. These are our ancestors, it hurts to know they are not shown the respect that they should have after laboring a long hard life. After all, they did not give any of us the graves free, the markers free, or the funeral free. We did pay for all of it, and I really feel that someone is responsible for keeping some type of contract to the living. Please let me hear from you. I am really concerned. dee

I am not searching for Rains forward. My forward Raines search ends when Patsey Rains married my ggrandfather, Henry Leonard in 1810 in Randolph Co., N.C. My Raines search ONLY goes backwards. I was simply posting what I found while looking for the ancestors I knew were on the census's, to make copies because I wasn't smart enough to do that when I had them in my hand 27 years ago in Iowa! I had hoped to quite possibly help someone by posting what I had found and to let any researcher know that there were no other Rains(es) on the other 2 census. I will be going through Jefferson and Davis County , Iowa as soon as it arrives. If I find anything there, I will post it, also. Dear Virgil and Nancy, I have been sitting here in Colorado watching this discussion on the Rains names on the 1799 tax lists. I may have a clue for you. I am searching for a John Rains, during this time period, in Randolph Co. He was born in 1772 in NC and left for TN about 1808 then Ray County, MO.in the early 1830's. Accompanying him on the journey were the Craven family. This listing, esp. as you noted below--the Windsor Pierce list mentioned a John Rains, Sr. that noone seems to know about. In an earlier post, there was mention of a Hennery Rains listed with the Craven family. My question is whether this Windsor Pierce list also listed Cravens? Especially in MO, the Rains and Cravens intermarried. John, mentioned above, had a sister, Elizabeth Catherine who married Richard C. Craven and John's daughter, married Jeremiah Craven, son of Joshua. Since I have never been to NC (but hope to someday), I keep hoping I will find a substantial clue somewhere that is proof that John Rains did in fact live in Randolph County. As for him being John Rains, SR., I have no John Rains, JR in the children I have identified so far. But, that doesn't mean there wasn't a JR. at some point in time. I have never seen any of these tax books so am just going on what you all have posted. Virgil, this is the same John Rains you attempted to identify for me previously. I just felt that since this tax list listed one, I needed to see what others knew. Heritage books which are compilations of family stories and histories submitted by individuals. You correctly quoted the portion of the Raines article that listed those on the 1779 tax list. However, some of those names do not match the 1779 list abstracted by William Perry Johnson and published in The North Carolinian-A Quarterly Journal of Genealogy and History Vol. II, No. 2, June 1956. This copy has been on file with other Randolph Co. tax lists in the Randolph Room of the Randolph Co. Public Library for some time. The best news is that this list has been re-researched, corrections made in Johnson's transcription, and details of property given. It was recently published (Spring 2000) in three installments in the Randolph Co. Genealogical Journal, Vol. XXIV, No. 1, 2, 3. As in Johnson's list, there are eight Rains Men - Robert Rains in Joseph Hinds' list, John Rains, Sr. in Windsor Pierce's list, Ishmael Rains, Robert Rains, Anthony Rains, Laurence Rains, James Rains, and George Rains in John Hinds' list. The original document can be found in the NC State Archives, Secretary of State Papers, SS837. The source was given in the 2000 publication above. I had always planned to check out the original myself, but when it was recently published, I didn't see a burning need to. Maybe I still will. O yes Nancy by your E-Mail address you must be sitting right in the middle of these Rains are am I just assuming to much Ha! Vergil
Nancy, You did not mention A " Hennary nor a Leonard' in your research. I've seen Leonard but this article was the first to mention Hennary(Henry, I assume). This is the guy I would like to know about. Also who is Robert Sr. and John Sr. as we do not have any birth dates for sure on them. O- well one of these days. Vergil Raines

Hey Virgil, Since my library dosen't have much, I would have to travel pretty far to check at a larger library. I will wait until you learn how to scan. (Don't feel too bad, I look at my scanner and wish I knew how to use it too. Maybe after you learn, you can pass it across the net.) Is anyone working on RAINS in Pryor, Mayes County, Oklahoma? I am looking for Etta Engle Rains. Thank you, Shirley
Delores and others, Martin Van Buren is my ggrandfather, and I would be interested in sharing information with any of you. Martin Van Buren married Delilah Catherine Travis, and had several children, one of which was Laura Texas who married Valentine Drake, my grandparents. Please e-mail me at pekunkel@arn.net Pat Kunkel
I can only repeat what this article says " Randolph County's first tax list of 1779 lists Ishmael,John Sr., and Robert. It also introduces the following Rains: George Sr. and Jr.,Ambors,Hennary,William,Laurence,James,Anthony and Leonard." Vergil Raines Baxter60@aol.com
The 1779 tax list is Randolph Co., NC's first tax list. Henry Rains does not appear on this list. Hennary Rains (1 white poll -no land) is, however, on Thomas Craven's List of Taxable Property in 1799. Henry Rains is on the 1800 Randolph Co. census (20110-22010-00). I hope I have those numbers in the census correct. I haven't checked the original. At this time I have found no other reference to a Henry in Randolph. baxter60@aol.com wrote: > Bob, I've been intending to write, but now is OK. " The Heritage of Randolph County, North Carolina" Volume II-1999. Most Genealogy Lib. has this book. The problem is finding 1999 or newer. You could also write Randolph Public Library Asheboro, North Carolina and they would make you a copy of the section on the Raines Family section 354. Vergil, Where can article "Heritage of Randolph County NC" be found?
Bob, I've been intending to write, but now is OK. Have you seen the article " The Heritage of Randolph County, North Carolina?" This article mentions a Hennary on 1779 tax list. Could this be the Henry you've been looking for. Let me know. Vergil Baxter60@aol.com
