Maryellen, Interesting observation. I have wondered about this Wiliam of Surry VA in Bute NC in 1769-1770 who was affiliated with Joseph of Bute NC. William & Josephs relationship were most likely cousins. Joseph, I believe is the s/o Francis Jr-3 while William was s/o John-3. -----Original Message----- From: Maryellen Horrigan Sent: Saturday, October 27, 2007 10:05 AM To: ragan-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: [RAGAN-ROOTS] John, son of Francis Some years ago, I pursued John, son of Francis and the assumed Jane Gross. I was lucky enough to encounter Linda Ahearn and tap into her conclusions. She is an amazing researcher of this NC bunch of R's. Most of the work below is from a 7 year old correspondence with her. Francis left a written 19 Mar 1727 will. He mentions 10 children. (I have some doubt that this is actually the order of the children, but) ... the last mentioned was son John ( est birth 1705-10) John received various pots and dishes. If his mother remarried, John was to get 1/2 of plantation and 1/2 land rented from Wm Thompson. ( this may be the same Thompson family that intermarries with the Francis Riggan and John Riggan Families in Bute) After Jane's death, John was to get 1/3 of the estate and the other 2/3 was to be divided among sons Francis, Thomas, Richard. The only son not getting real property was Joseph. Joseph got a cup and a gun. Richard got 5 pounds, Francis Jr got the home plantation, Dan'l got a plantation, Thomas got 150 A " now in possession of Joseph", the daughters each got 1 pound 5 shillings. This sounds to me like Joseph is already set up...off and gone...on his own. Geography: In 1730 Francis Jr and Mom Jane sell property in Isle of Wight. Francis is of Isle of Wight, Jane is of Surry. ( Property wa to Francis Sr 1722.) In 1732 Frances and wife Elizabeth sell to a Joseph High, 50 A in Surry Co Va. On the Blackwater. In 1727, in Bertie Co NC appear Joseph, Thomas, and Daniel Regan. In the same year, Joseph and Daniel both die and leave land to sons Joseph and Daniel Jr. These two ( I am not clear if Linda means the sr or jr two) have land in Isle of Wight on Round Hill Swamp. In Surry Co VA in 1766, John Riggan, son of Francis and Jane, leaves a will dated 12 Dec 1766, probated 20Jan 1767. Children mentioned were William, Jesse, Benjamin, and Mary. No mention of wife...assumed dead. William and Benjamin each get 100 A, Mary and Benj divide personal property, Jesse gets a bed and furniture. William and Benj. Continue on the Surry Co tax lists with 100 A each. Jesse does not own, but rents 230 1/4 A from Anthony Digge. And died about 1792. Linda believes William, son of this John of Francis and Jane, in 1769 went to NC and purchased 100 A of land there from Joseph and Mary Riggan, then sold it in 1770 to William Durham and returned to Surry Co VA. I find this an interesting viewpoint, esp of the William in both Surry and NC. We have talked about this before as to whether the Surry Co Wm was just investing in NC. Looks like Ms Ahearn thinks so also.
