5th child of James and Joan Rgn of Charles Co MD: Charles County Circuit Court, Birth, Deaths & Marriage Records, Liber Q Regon, William s/o James Regon and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 31 Jan 1690 and we have: St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia REGAN, William, d November 21, 1744. Are they the same man? What records have we in between. I am going to begin with Grace Powell. To do that, let's peek at the Powells. There are Powells in Jamestown. I don't know if they are these Powells. Richard Powell Sr arrived sometime in the mid 1600's and settled in Lancaster VA later called Old Rappahannock VA. Then it becomes, or they move to Stafford VA., Westmorland VA, Fairfax VA, Washington VA. I am "told" he died in 1702. I have not seen a will. 3 sons...Joseph disappears. Then we have William and Richard Jr. Both are central to out tale. Richard daughters out. (Grace XXX was Richard's wife.) But the daughters become ours. William weaves in and out of the Rgns. They were people of property. They relate to the Washingtons, the Lees, and the Gales ( a Washington daughter.) They interweave with the Colcloughs and the Buckners. William Powell married Amey Raleigh and has 3 children of note ( there are others.) William's son William Powell Jr married Elizabeth Rgn, daughter of Charles, granddaughter of James and Joan. on 2 APR 1747 in St Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia Amey Powell, daughter of William Sr married Anthony Buckner, son of Peyton Buckner. I mention this because there is a Rev War Vet sitting in early GA with a Rev War land grant named Buckner Rgn. Hmmm. Elizabeth Powell dau by an earlier marriage marries William Rgn, son of James and Joan .I question this. I think William Rgn's first wife was a daughter of Richard Jr's. Has anyone seen proof of this marriage? I have seen an Gloria Dei,Old Trinity, Christiana Church, records for the birth of various children to William and Elizabeth Bridget Rgn, the last posthumous...anyone have that? I just spent the last hour trolling through the Gloria Dei records and came up empty. Anyone? Sigh. Back to Grace Powell widow of Richard. Elijah Wood is a son of John Wood Sr. and Possibly a son of Joan XXX Regan Wood. Grace Powell is his mother in law. Evidently she is all that is left to admin his estate. Her daughter, Jane, is dead. Grace herself will be dead in a few months. Elijah is without a will. Grace's brother in law William Powell helps with the task. John Wood's granddaughter Mary Chillingsworth/Killingsworth leaves the land her father gave her parents Elizabeth Wood and Edward Killingsworth to Jemima and Edward Derrick, daughter and her hubby of Grace Powell, also in 1734, as she was also dying. Okay, let's take this will apart. Richard Powell's death is estimated to be in 1725/6. Grace Powell has never remarried. Rare...property...status....period. The will states: Daughter Mary Wilford, slave, linen, livestock Daughter Grace Berry, slave, linen, livestock daughter Jemima Derrick, linen livestock, gun William Riggin/Regon livestock so Powell Regon Riggin guns sword ( he could be William Powell and called Powell to be separate from dad, or Powell to Grace because that was what mattered to her, or actually be just Powell) Jane Regon/Riggin fowl, household items Cornelius Cheeseman livestock son Thomas Cheeseman livestock Michael Hall livestock Richard Foote Jr violin Elijah Wood's kids corn and slave ( till youngest 14) Grace Vinson linen Powells, Buckners, Washingtons are all over the records here and everywhere of this family. Okay, I have comments...are you surprised? The three living daughters are easy... their gifts are equal. What is surprising is that William Riggin, Cornelius Cheeseman and Michael Hall also get livestock...okay, no used sheets... that's a woman to woman gift due to the work involved and the female responsibility for the creation of the linens...not a guy thing. Elijah Wood's children get the use of a slave, then back to the estate...probably Jemima as she didn't get a slave. Stafford records were hit badly twice... by the British and by the Yankees. I cannot find a probate for Richard Powell Jr.. There are spotty land records. Perhaps some land is traceable. Clearly, Grace had means, but the disposal of the land is not in her hands...it's allocated. She does have " things" to distribute. Why are William Riggin, Cornelius Cheeseman and Michael Hall ( lesser value here) put on a par with Grace's daughters getting valuable livestock? I believe they all married now dead Powell daughters and Grace is ensuring against estate claims by any of them. If they married Powell girls, they have to be mentioned or they go after the $$, claiming they were forgotten in her final illness. Powell Riggin, Jane Riggin and Thomas Cheeseman, I believe, are grandchildren of Grace and Richard Powell's by their dead daughters. The items that the Riggin children get are personal. Jane may have been named for Grace's deceased daughter who was married to Elijah Wood. There is a double connection here for William Riggin...he and Elijah both married Powell women, and Elijah is at least his step brother, if not his half brother. This will, in my opinion, makes clear that this William Rgn is the same as the William Regon that Joan XXX Regon, widow of James, carried into her second marriage with John Wood. It doesn't tell us that this is the man dead in 1744. But looky looky at the names! Stafford Co VA Will Book 1729-1748: p 138 (p. 529) 1746 The Estate of WILL. REGAN deced To WM. Please note that this is not a will but an estate settlement. We don't know who Kesiah, Elizabeth, or William Powell are...just that they received value from the estate. But there's Richard Foote again. Richard Foote...ahhhh the Foote folk.... they marry people named Washington, Pope, Colclough, Berryman, Newton etc in Stafford VA and their kids end up in Guilford NC. yeesh! There is a lot of paper on the Foote folk...was Grace a Foote maybe ? we will return to the Foote family... I just can't say Footes. Or was Grace a Harmon? I have connections to this Harman guy that make me salivate. We do have the following: STAFFORD COUNTY VA DEED & WILL BOOK 1699 - 1709; THE ANTIENT PRESS pp. 359- 360 Will of CHRISTOPHER HARMAN. As a footenote, Grace Vinson pops up again in the paper of this family. ( see Mary Chillingsworth will above) She's maybe be a niece of Grace Powell's...we'll chew on her later. Frances Balthrop also keeps popping up. We'll look at her later. Okay, there is a William in Charles Co MD that is a year off the estimated birth of a William who dies in Stafford VA...right where other kids of James and Joan have gone to live and die. What else? Let's talk about the Thompsons. I'm going to do the short version...William Thompson was the assumed son of a New England minister...documented....he took up the parsonage at Surry Co VA...the son, that is. This is documented. lots of court stuff...etc. Very successful... no poor minister here. Rev. William Thompson preached at both Southwark Parish and Lawne's Creek Parish in Surry County. He was born circa 1620 so he came to Virginia as a young man. He later married Katherine Hale, a daughter of Edward Hale. Edward Hale's dated 1675 left William Thompson sole executor and gave him all his estate. The Will was probated May 2, 1676 on the oaths of Mrs. Jane Plow, "the other witness being gone to New England." (Bk. 2, p. 114) His first land grant in Surry was for 230 acres in 1666. The following is quoted from a dear friend, Nola Duffy, a researcher of William Powell Riggins, and a former head of qualification for the DAR of NC: Judging from the tithables in Surry, 1675, the wealthiest men in Southwark Parish appear to have been Lieut. Col. George Jordan, Attorney General of Virginia, with 7 tithable servants. Second was Rev. William Thompson with 6 white servants. About 1679 or 1680 Rev. William's Thompson removed to Westmoreland County, Virginia, where he became minister of Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., where he eventually died. It is not known why he moved to Westmoreland unless it was due to a family friendship with the Washington family there. His family all moved with him except his son John who had married Elizabeth, widow of John Salway. On August 4, 1690, "William Thompson of the County of Westmorland, in the Colony of Virginia, appoint my dear loving son, John Thompson, of the County of Surry, my lawful attorney. (Surry, Deeds etc. No. 5, p. 245). When William's eldest son, John Thompson, made his will in Surry Co. on Aug. 2, 1698, he said in will "Brother Samuel not living in Surry County." William's two sons, Samuel and William, lived in Westmoreland County for about 20 years but moved back to Surry before 1704 when Samuel Thompson was executor of Richard Hargrave's will and William Thompson was a witness to it. (Bk. 5, p.313) When Lawrence Washington (grandfather to George) made his will in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia, on March 11, 1697-8, he bequeathed "to friend, Mr. William Thompson, Clerk, and Mr. Samuel Thompson, each a mourning ring of thirty shillings price each ring." He left "my cousin, John Washington, of Stafford County, and "my friend, Mr. Samuel Thompson, to be my executors, and my loving wife, Mildred, my executrix." The will was proved 10 December 1700 by the oath of Mildred Gale, als. Washington (wife of George Gale), one of the executors, power being reserved for John Washington and Samuel Thompson, the other executor, to act." (Vol. I, p. 299) It appears from this will that Samuel Thompson was in Westmoreland in 1700 and that Samuel and his youngest brother, William Thompson, moved back to Surry between 1700 and 1704. ...... William's brother, Samuel Thompson, must have left him a very well to do man for he and his son, Samuel, were left most of his brother's property. He was the only one of the sons of Rev. William Thompson who left children. He made his will December 20, 1731, probated October 18, 1732. The will is badly torn and partly destroyed. He names son, Samuel Thompson; daughter Katherine; daughter Hannah Thompson (devised 100 acres on land on Deep Branch); son John (10 acres after the decease of his mother and the gun and pistols given him by William Moseley) and grandchildren, Samuel and Mary Thompson (rest and remainder of his estate). The Witnesses were Jane Regan, Mary Regan and Mary Mastin. (Will Bk. 8, p. 240). His son, William, must have been included in part of the will that is missing for it is proven by his brother, Samuel Thompson's will that he had a son, William. In nameing his brother William's children he named William as the thrid child. John Thompson also mentioned brother William in his will. Samuel Thompson (William, William, John), born circa 1686 married Sarah Edwards. He was a witness to Michael Harris' will Jan. 1739 (Bk. 9, p. 464); to John Bamers will on Oct 2, 1731; and to his brother-in-law William Edwards' will on Feb. 10, 1744. There is a deed Oct. 24, 1748 from Samuel and Sarah Thompson to John Thompson, both of Surry for 23 acres, part of 150 acres Samuel purchased of Joseph King and Catherine, his wife, land on east side of Cypress Swamp. Witnesses were John Riggan, Sen., Wm. George, John Riggan, Jun. and Joseph Riggan (Bk. 5, p. 371). On August 31, 1751 Samuel deeded to his brother, John Thompson, 250 acres on east side of Cypress Swamp (Bk. 6, p. 439). It would appear these deed represent the sale of property in anticipation of moving to North Carolina. (Note the references to members of the Riggan family. ) Sarah Edwards was the daughter of William Edwards whose will was dated January 9, 1721/22, probated Feb. 21, 1724. William Edwards' will names daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Ann and Sarah; sons, Benjamin, William and Micajah. He also devised to Francis Regan "one dividend of land lying at the mouth of Susquehannah branch, lower end of his line and the great swamp below his house not exceeding 10 acres, formerly promised to Samuel Kindred." (Bk. 7, p. 389). Children of Samuel Thompson (WILLIAM, WILLIAM, JOHN) and Sarah Edwards: 1. Samuel Thompson 2. Sarah Thompson married Jacob Williams 3. Mary Thompson married Thomas Bell. * 4. Anne Thompson married John Myrick Anne, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Thompson Bell married John Riggan of Warren/Bute NC. The wills of Samuel and William Thompson demonstrate the presence of 2 Johns, a Joseph, a Francis, a Jane, and a Mary Riggan...close enough to these Thompsons to be part of their wills. My, My. In general, the Thompsons marry all the big names in the group who travel together from VA to NC. They are the first I can place both in the Westmorland area of the Powells, Washingtons, Newtons and a handful for Rgns etc. livde and where at least William Riggin died in 1744. The daughter of Thomas and Mary Thompson Bell, Anne, married John Bell of Warren Co NC. They had issue. This is about one tenth of the material I have of Colcloughs, Durhams, Shearins, Thompsons, Powells, Woods, Footes and Rgns etc that we can trace in one big solid lump moving across VA...many beginning in MD, to early Guilford Co NC. Okay, we know a William of Surry VA buys in Bute/Warren NC near men with names that match this bunch, such as John and Joseph, but stays in VA. There is a William Powell that dies in Warren in 1770 leaving a pack of sons, but physically might be a generation off from MD. We know there is a Powell in SC in 1800 with a brief appearance of a William. There is a Powell in NC, son of William Powell who is often confused with the one in SC but is distinct. There is a William son of William Powell, whom everyone seems to insist is William David, though I have yet to figure why. There are a whole galloping bunch of Williams and William Powells who go galloping through TN, KY, TX and heavens knows where else. I have Mary Hinton Kerr's abstracts of Warren/Bute NC... another letter. So, what William, William Powell, Powell Rgn do you have in MD, VA, NC up until 1800. Paper anyone???? Fondly, Maryellen --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
M'ellen JW Garrett OK, given that Wm R b. 1690 has a wife Elizabeth Bridgit? (according to record was his wife) they have a 1st daughter Elizabeth b. 1715 when Wm was abt 25 yrs old. This Elizabeth d 1717 Next son John b. 1717/d. 1718. Then surviving children Powell b. 1722, Keziah b. 1727, Elizabeth b. 1731. We are not sure who Winifred b. May 1744 belongs to other than Bridget "R". her alleged father Wm may have dec'd bef her birth in May 1744. Grace Powell 1733 will does mention Wm & Powell & Jane "R". But who is Jane? She is not found in any birth record, nor is she mentioned in the Wm's 1744 estate settlement. I can see how one would think that Wm was md to a d/o Wm & Grace Powell. But this certainly conflicts with the last name "Bridget". Because Elizabeth, Wm Powell, and Keziah are mentioned in Wm's 1744 estate settlement in Stafford VA, I "assume" these are his surviving children. Powell is 22, Keziah 17, Elizabeth 14. Note that Winifred is not mentioned, she would have been < 1 yr old. Then by 1765 a Wm Powell & Wm Riggan is in Bute NC involed in an accout sale of Daniel Harris, dec'd. I "assume" this is Wm Powell (md to Elizabeth Reagan) and Wm Riggan-3 s/o Wm & Bridget both from Stafford VA. 1766 Bute tax list is Powell Riggan (same as Wm Riggan above in 1765?) Then in 1769 Wm Riggan of Surry VA purchases from Joseph Riggan. So now we have to Wm Riggans in Bute by 1769. Still not convinced Wm Powell R b. 1722 is s/o Wm of Surry VA. I think the Wm of Surry was Wm-4 b. abt 1730/d. 1813 Surry, s/o John-3 (but of course no proof). Then 1770 Wm Powell "R" is dec'd at age abt 48, leaving 6 sons 3 of whom are minors, John, James, and Richard. Dec 1770 Bute Wm Riggan-4? of Surry to Wm Durham adj Joseph Raggon & Wm Raggon-?. Here it look as though there is a 3rd Wm "R" (note: Riggan vs Raggon). Is this Wm a possible brother or son of Joseph/Mary (s/o Francis). Or is this Wm (b. by 1750) the s/o Wm Powell/Pricsilla? 1771 Bute Wm Riggin to Wm Durham note that it does not say "Wm R Surry". Does this refer to the other William-? R (connected to Joseph or s/o Wm/Pricsilla?) 1771 FWV Co., NC Powell Riggan-4 (Wm-3/Pricsilla?) b. by 1750 Wm Riggan (of Surry?) 1778 ROWAN NC Wm Reggins is a gaurd at the Salibury Dist Wm Rigen in Lopp'd dist Wm Rigen in capt Davis's dist 1782 & 1784 Surry VA Tax Wm Rigon (John-3) who has land in Bute? 1784 96th dist SC Wm & John Riggins 1790 Warren NC Wm Riggan (John/Ann Bell) Wm Riggan (Francis Sr-5) So where are "Wm R of Surry" VA & the other Wm "R"? Wm "R"of Surry (who is taxed in Surry in 1782 & 1784) possibly sold his land and back to Surry? the other Wm (s/o Wm/Pricsilla) is in Orange co., NC in 1790. Any feedback/comments welcomed Jim
