    1. [RAGAN-ROOTS] Where have you been Billie Boy , Billie Boy
    2. Maryellen Horrigan
    3. I am not sure where I will begin. For those of you who are new to us, I will not quibble about spelling. I have one proven family that begins as Regon, and becomes Regin, Ragen, Regains, Raggans, Reagens, Riggins and Ragan. We research Rgn’s.   I feel that if we can sort out NC of the 1700’s, we will hold the key to the ancestors in VA and MD and the descendents in KY, TN, AL, GA, MS, LA…etc etc…..sigh.  This round I am concentrating on 2 factors…#1… 17th and 18th century R’s. I don’t want to deal, for the moment, with any R that wasn’t recorded in this country before 1800. #2… I’d like to major in Williams’ We have enough William R’s in 200 years to stuff our own boat.  Speaking of boats, if your 17 ancestor cousins came over together on the ark…save it until you have proof.  No family legends for now ( wait till we get truly desperate.) Also, if cousin Vinney married Gloria R in 1952 and the dog bit her and she died before you could ask who her parents were, please be patient till we try to beat the Colonial bushes first.         Any claims I make I can prove, unless I state otherwise. I will not prove every niggling thing at this time, as the e-mail won’t handling it all. LOL. I said I was going to discuss William R’s..and I will…sorta…after a few amazing women.   Margaret Colclough. Margaret is doggone near 150 years of R. history wrapped up in her personal story. Margaret married first, William Durham, the grandson of Joan XXX Regon Wood, widow of James Regon of Charles Co MD, and second wife of John Wood of Charles Co MD. William’s parents were William and Mary Regon Durham.( his grandmother was a Chapman) Mary Regon Durham was the oldest child of James and Joan Regon, who’s birth was recorded in1683 Charles Co, MD. In 1707, John Wood, second husband of Mary XXX Regon gives 200 acres out of 2960 acres that he owns in Stafford Co VA., to Mary Riging  his daughter in law ( step daughter) and husband, Samuel Durram. They leave for Stafford Co VA. There they have 6 kids. Son William Durham marries Margaret Colclough in Stafford Co., VA . Margaret is the daughter of  the amazing Rachel XXX and Benjamin Colclough. Rachael leaves a 1748 Stafford Co, VA will that names people all over the Eastern seaboard including her son William, 2 Bowling daughters, a daughter Jane Newton, and daughter Margaret Durham. Margaret Colclough Durham’s brother William marries a woman names Mary Rogers… more on her later. William and Mary Colclough have a daughter Margaret Colclough who marries Henry Foote. ( Aha, James, I have your attention) In 1763 William and Mary Colclough sell their VA land, as do Henry and Margaret Colclough Foote. They immediately  buy in Granville Co NC. When Henry Foote dies Margaret Colclough Foote marries Henry Shearin. He dies and she remarries a third time to a Burford without issue. Margaret’s various Shearin (2) and Foote(9) children marry Shearins, Bells, Riggins and Powells. Indeed, a granddaughter, and a gtgranddaughter of Margaret’s each marry a Littleton Riggins… one a son of Francis Jr and one a grandson of John/Bell. All of these families seem to plop down from MD to Stafford, Westmorland, and Surry VA. Most go on to NC.   I can trace Bells, Thompsons, Pegrams, and Powells and some Raggans together from Westmorland and Surry VA to NC…Granville, Warren/Bute, Orange. I can trace Regon, Colclough, Wood, Marshall, Chapman together from MD to Stafford, Westmorland, Surry VA, to Granville, Halifax, Warren/Bute NC. Of the six children of Joan and James Regon of Charles Co, MD, John is the only one whom we can prove died in MD. Margaret is lost to us. John left unnamed minor children ( 1730)who were raised by their mother who remarried a James Carrell. Mr Carrell was still in Charles Co in 1745. We don’t know about the kids. Mathew ( with a Chapman wife) sold out in MD in 1752 and was lost  to us. hmmm ( dau Eliz stayed In MD) Mary Regon Durham died ,we assume, in Stafford VA. William…ahhh, I think William died in Surry VA…but we will come back to William… Charles Regon/Reagon , youngest of James and Joan, had,I believe ,10 children in St Paul’s Parish, Stafford Co VA. One of those children was a Charles born in 1734, whom I believe, but working on proof, was the Rev soldier in NC. And…. Charles has a daughter Jane who married a Samuel Evans. Please note ( drum roll) the William Powell Riggins that leaves land in Bute/Warren Co NC to his 6 sons, mentions land to son Charles , including the plantation whereon Jane Evans dwells. Yeah Jane. William Powell buys land in Bute/Warren and it was delivered to Charles Raggans….James, do you have this…I saw it last nite and it’s gone poof….this is not his son Charles, as the latter is minor at Wm P’s death…but a trusted Charles…hmmmm   We haven’t mentioned the Grace Powell will in Stafford.VA wherein she legacies William, Powell, and Jane Riggins and the children of Eliah Wood… witnessed by William Powell and EX John Washington, or the will of same John Washington ( grandfather to Geo. ) who legacies the Thompson brothers who marry the Bells and the Riggins, and the Shearins and move to Warren Co NC. There is a Joseph in VA also, but that’s for another day. Okay, this is an opening salvo. I believe I can overwhelm us with proof that the William and William Powell R’s of Surry and Warren are of the line of James and Joan. I have a strong suspicion that John/Bell may also be of Joan/James, but he might be Daniel/Elizabeth of the mouth. I do not believe John and Francis are brothers, but their fathers could be. There is too much trust here not to be kin. I have found 2 new Johns. One is an adult in Charles Co MD who is witnessing when all the known Johns are dead or too young. Charles has a John. John might have had a John, or Mathew. There is a Joseph in Surry that I feel is Joseph/Mary XXX b.1710/12 and of the house of James/Joan….not the Joseph/Anna XXX of Joseph with the John, Richard, Ralph.   It does occur to me, that if I cannot definitely slip John/Bell and Francis into the house of James/Joan…I might have to concede that Daniel/Eliz of the mouth and James/Joan are related…Oh heavens…Sam will never let me live that down… I still don’t know where Daniel II died…LOL One further note for newbies….Daniel/Elizabeth of the mouth… this was a Daniel Rigen at the time of Bacon’s Rebellion in VA whose wife Elizabeth was whipped for verbal sass. Quaker women were treated by their men as equals, and they often spoke up. Daniel was fined for not doffing his cap, again a seeming Quaker, or just stubborn…they seem to be a couple protesting politically . Because of ole Liz’s punishment, I have dubbed her “Elizabeth of the mouth”… there being too many Elizabeths. I also ID various men with their wives’ maiden names…thus we have John/Bell ( Ann Bell wife) , or Francis/Pegram etc. it sorts out similar men and their sons.   I needed to start somewhere….let’s try to take our time and not scattergun… one William at a time…. Then we can see who goes where. Greetings to all, M’ellen

    3. M'ellen Re: John R-2 (James/Joan-1) was John dec'd by 1730? How many unamed children? males or females? There were at least two John R's in Granville NC by 1755, John Ragon by himself 1-0-1 and John Regan with Francis Regan 2-0-2. Re: Mathew R Apparently there were two Mathews. The Mathew-2 b. 1687/d. 1716 And the other Mathew who sells in 1752. To whom does he belong? Re: Charles R-2 Do you have proof of his children? Speculativly I have Jemima, James, and John-3, and Elizabeth, but no Charles I think this possible son John-3 is the John who died 1826 Rockingham NC. He had lived in Guilford and served in Rev War. He and George Oliver (husband of Jemima R) owned adj. lands on Dan River in Rowan NC. The Charles b. 1735 I think belongs to Timothty-1 of AA MD via son John-2 (no proof). This Charles was in Frederick, Dumore, & Shenandoah VA before moving on to Blount Co., TN where he died. This Charles md Elizabeth Henry. The Charles R who was in Rev War NC was b. 1759 NC enlisted 1778. He md Milly Poplin and lived (1790, 1800 census) and died in Lincoln Co NC. Another Charles R enlisted Rev war in 1776 Charles Co., MD. He allegedly collected his pension in Warren NC. Tell me more re: Wm Powell who buys land then delivers to Charles Raggan. When and where? 1766 Bute NC tax list Charles & son Riggan 1771 Bute Charles Riggan Sr Charles Riggan Jr 1774 Bute Charles Riggan md Zillah Lindsey (I think this Charles is b/o my Peter Reagan who md a Lindsey) 1775 Bute a Charles Riggens was on a jury 1800 Warren Charles Reggon b. bef 1755 1810 Warren Charles Riggen 1812 Warren /Capt Turner's dist Charles Riggens John Riggens I would like to be able to sort all the Charles R's out. I think my Peter had the brother Charles (Jr?) whose father was Charles Sr R of Bute. Who is this Charles Sr? JW Garrett

I think Charles b. 1734/35 who died in Blount TN is of the Timothy line. re: Isaac s/o Margaret...there is an Isaac in Pitt co NC (cant remember when, need to look at notes).
