Ashe Co. was cut from Wilkes in 1799. So Eli was probably born in what was Rowan Co. in 1765. Surry was cut in 1770 from Rowan, Wilkes from Surry and the District of Washington in 1777. Mary "Polly" Burton who married David Riggins in Adair Co., KY, was a granddaughter of John Stapp who lived in the Wilkes/Ashe/Burke area for almost 20 years before moving to Kentucky. Polly Burton had a brother whose middle name was Gilliam...Their father, Hutchins Burton, came from Granville Co., NC, he migrated to Adair Co. and then to Missouri.
