    3. I am sure they do NOT! About the best you could do is find deeds and/or wills, and I'm sure you've already done that. This 1759 tax list from Rowan does not include any Ragan-or-variations http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/rowan/taxlists/tax1759.txt "An" Eli Ragan was enumerated in the 1790 Rowan Co. census. An Eli is in Ashe Co. 1800. The American Genealogy Biography Index places "an" Eli Ragan in NC as born about 1750 (earlier than other sources, if he was the same man). It doesn't say in what county he was born. It is possible your Eli was born elsewhere and migrated to this part of the state. As slippery as the state line was back then, it's possible he came from southside VA or more northerly VA counties. There was a Nicholas Ragan in Washington Co., VA...maybe he was related? He was possibly a son of a Michael Ragan of Fairfax Co., VA, and he had a son named Peter... One of the Burtons I have tracked "went" from (or owned land in or was in court in) Goochland Co. to Cumberland Co. to Augusta Co. to Lunenburg (a lot of this was also county line changes) to Johnston Co. (NC) to Rowan/Surry/Wilkes/Ashe/Montgomery/Fincastle/Washington...he died in Wilkes in 1799, just when Ashe was cut. You might get lucky by asking a volunteer to look at the records they have for Rowan: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncrowan/rowan_lookup.htm But I would also look at the counties just across the state line.
