Monday morning March 15, 2010 Dear James, Here is my answer to your questions. This JOHN REAGIN who married Elizabeth Edwards was born circa 1745 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He came with his parents, Rezin and Anne Ragan/Reagan to Frederick County, Virginia about 1748. And he died about July 1800 in Newberry District, South Carolina. Then JOHN REAGIN married Elizabeth Edwards in Frederick County, Virginia. There were Edwards families living there at that time. Will listed the children of JOHN REAGIN and ELIZABETH EDWARDS. JOSEPH REAGIN married Molly Joy DANIEL REAGIN married (______) Julien MOLLY REAGIN married Robert Longshore JESS REAGIN married Rachel Joy PHOEBE REAGIN married John A. Arnold JOHN REAGIN married Cynthia Gilbert WILLIAM D. REAGIN married Phoebe Burton ELIZABETH REAGIN married John Edmundson REASON REAGIN married Ann Amy Gilbert SARAH ANN REAGIN married John Right There were three brothers, John Ragan who married Elizabeth Edwards, Reason Ragan who married Rachel Connell, and Daniel Ragan who married Leah Wright in Newberry District, South Carolina. All came from Frederick County, Virginia. All three brothers were the sons of "first" Rezin and Anne Ragan of Anne Arundel County, Maryland; Frederick County, Virginia; and Westmoreland County (later Fayette County), Pennsylvania. Hope these information will be most helpful. Sincerely, Donald B. Monday morning March 15, 2010 Dear Ragan-Roots folks, I like to add my thoughts on the Ragan/Reagan families of Newberry District, South Carolina. After much studying on these Ragan/Reagan families in Newberry District, South Carolina, there were three brothers, John Ragan who married Elizabeth Edwards, Reason Ragan who married Rachel Connell, and Daniel Ragan who married Leah Wright - all came from Frederick County, Virginia. All three brothers were the sons of "first" Rezin and Anne Ragan of Anne Arundel County, Maryland; Frederick County, Virginia; and Westmoreland County (later Fayette County), Pennsylvania. There is older Reason Ragan who appears in 1790 Federal Census. And he does appear again in 1800 Federal Census. But, then he disappeared after 1800. This Reason Ragan is the one who married Rachel Connell. Also he was mentioned as the one of the settlers who lived among the quaker families in Newberry District, South Carolina. Each one of three brothers had their own families. It is true that some of these Ragan and Reagan families left Newberry District, South Carolina and went to Ohio first and Indiana later. Then some of the Ragan and Reagan families left there too and went to Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee later. It does get more complicated among these Ragan and Reagan families because when and they have had used same name for several generations. It is very similar to my own family who came from Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. On "first" Rezin Ragan, son of Timothy and Mary Lary Ragan, the real proof for the naming of Rezin came from Holy Bible. You can find it there. Rezin is correct spelling for him. But the name of "Reason" is English version for it that does appear in contemporary sources today. All sons of Timothy and Mary Lary Ragan were named for these male individuals in Holy Bible. And I am still researching on where all daughters' first names originated from. I do welcome your comment(s) and input(s). Sincerely, Donald B. Those Reagins, however you spell it, are some who left Newberry when the Quakers left in the early 1800's. They are descendents of John Reagin (1745-1800) and Elizabeth Edwards (1743-aft. 1800). John Reagin, Jr. (1773-1803) married Synthia Gilbert (1783-1840) who married Jacob Lewis and moved to Tennessee. William Reagin (1775-1830) married Phebe Burton and stayed in Newberry. Joseph Reagin (1763-1817) married Mary Jay, and when he died she moved to Indiana. Jesse Reagin (176901823) married Rachel Jay and remained in SC. Reason Reagin married Amy/Ann Gilbert. Another Daniel Reagin (1759-1800) married Leah Wright. She died in Indiana. I am a descendant of William Reagin (1775-1830. I don't think the name is Ryan Reagin. It is Reason. However spelled. B. I am very interested in research on the RAGAN'S of Dickson Co., TN. I am not a descendant of the RAGAN line. I am related to the RAGAN'S through the marriage of John W. RAGAN to Letticia TYCER (married 1838 Dickson Co., TN). Letticia was the daughter of Ellis TYCER (b 1756 Northumberland Co., VA) and Rachel STANSBURY (b abt. 1774 possibly Massachusetts). My g-g-grandmother was a younger sister of Letticia TYCER Ragan. Several TYCER cousins are researching descendants of the five known children of Ellis TYCER and Rachel STANSBURY. The following research (Descendants of Jesse RAGAN) has been done regarding John W. RAGAN and Letticia TYCER. I would be happy to discuss or exchange more complete information (sources, etc.) about this line off list. My database (shielded and without sources) can be found on WorldConnect at: <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=huds> I also offer the following leads about census information for RAGAN'S in most North Carolina Counties, Dickson Co., Tennessee and various Texas Counties from 1790 to 1880. Ragon" <slpstk@bellsouth.net> To: RAGAN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Just check my pocket change and found my 2 cents. The 1820 census of Dickson Co. only lists the following Ragans: Ragan, Jesse 411111 - 02010 Ragan, Nathan 222301 - 00010 Ragan, William 211102 - 21110 Nathan is the father of Jesse and William as per lawsuit filed in 1846 to settle estate of Nathan. Jesse died in 1839 and his children are listed as defendants in the lawsuit. Hosea, Bennett, Joseph, Sarah(Self) and William are not named in the lawsuit only their father, William. I have concluded that William was probably living on the land that was in dispute and when the defendants lost the lawsuit he had to vacate and consequently relocated to Gibson Co., TN. where his sons were living. I have not been able to determine which of the defendants, born after 1790, are Nathan's children and which are Jesse's except the Jesse's minor children which are noted as such. Appended is my tentive Decendant Tree for Nathan's son, William. Any corrections, additions or comments are welcome. I have transcribe the pleading and verdict on this lawsuit if anyone desires to receive a copy please advise. I could use help in sorting the children. BTW, Alexander Washington Ragan's daughter, Freda Ragan Coats, lived across the street from my maternal grandparents in Bolivar, Tn. and I have a copy of her obitituary. James H. Michael, you wrote: "You probably already know this, but in case you don't, Elizabeth Ragin and the younger kids are in Harris Co., GA without James in 1850 census." Yes, Michael, I am aware of that and realized that I left that out in my message. Thanks for pointing that out to me We think James died in the '40's as he had a child.born about 1846/47. We tried the gold rush and the Mexican war but no help in locating him. I suspect records of such events were not very good for that era and we will probably never know if he was involved in one or the other. Regretfully, I'm not familiar with your James. But Lancaster Co is not too far from Newberry Co., SC. The Reagins that came there were Quakers but a lot of the offsprings stopped being Quakers and left Newberry. He may have come from that bunch. The only early 1800s James from Newberry Co. that I'm familiar with was a James Jones Reagin, the son of William Reagin & Phoebe Burdette Burton who was born in Newberry Co. abt 1810 and dies 1873 but this doesn't appear to be your James as he probably died in the 1840s. Sorry I can't help. You probably already know this, but in case you don't, Elizabeth Ragin and the younger kids are in Harris Co., GA without James in 1850 census. I have been trying to locate more information on the parents of my gg grandfather, James Ragan, and have butted my head against the proverbial brick wall many times! What little I know of my James is that he was born in Lancaster, SC, married Elizabeth Decker, is found on the 1840 census in Talbot Co., GA but not the 1850 census. They had at least eight children, Peter Fleming (born in SC), Simeon (or, Simon), Sarah Jane, Alfred Asa, Mary Elizabeth, W.L., Lucinda, and, J.C., all born in GA. There is always the possibility of others that we do not know about. Most of the issue left GA for TX and MS but Elizabeth (wife) died in GA. In your research have you seem any information concerning this family? Any ideas or suggestions? I have been in touch with a lot of Ragan (variant spellings) researchers and keep hoping that I can find one that either knows about this family or can suggest a site to search. I have relatively good records of most of the issue but would really love to uncover information on the parents of James. I have lots of data on the family (Decker) of his wife, Elizabeth but none of them have more than that she married James Ragan. Thanks for your time. Maryellen: No, I'm not the one to ask. My John Reagin ancester died about that time but I'm pretty sure he died in SC. I'm descended from his son Jesse through Jesse's son Young and Young's son Nicholas who went to Wilcox Co., Alabama abt 1840. I recall that some of Nicholas' siblings and cousins left in Abbeville Co., SC immigrated to southern GA in the 1850s but I don't have any other knowledge of GA Reagins. If your Jonathan was already in GA before 1810, he probably didn't come through Abbeville. If he is descended from Timothy, his line may have come from Newberry or skipped Newberry and came straight from MD or VA. I'm not buying it. Seriously, I'm not getting this one. Is there proof I have not seen ?
