    3. While in the library for 7 hours last week I encountered other bits of Rgn folk. In 1729/30 Stafford VA there were two men of interest. A William and a Michael Reagan appear on a list of tithables. In a tome entitled 1705 Virginia Quit Rent Rolls ...corrected edition...ed Harold Oliver, is a great deal about Spencers. I know some of you have an interest in Spencers. In Stafford, these Spencers are tangled with John Washington and folk named Stearman/Sturman, and others. I can't send photos to Roots Web. Anyone with a bonified interest , tell me.( when in the library, I take photos of ref books. I took over 2000 this week. Also of interest is Westmorland Co VA Deeds, Patents etc 1665-1677 John Frederick Dorman This John Washington is the Great grandfather of George of note. He acts as Justice so is all over the court records. He died in 1675 leaving much to his sons Lawrence and John ( who becomes a lawyer) It is this second John who is referenced by Grace Powell ( and others) in her will. Lawrence died young. His widow, Mildred Warner Washington , married a George Gale, who took the money and ran to England with young Augustine and Mildred Washington. John Washington Jr sued on 2 continents to recover the money and the 2 kidlets. Augustine was to become the father of George. Filed in the court records is a receipt from John Washington for Augustine and Mildred to George Gale. Funny. John married a Mary Massey. Winifred Massey married Elisha Powell, son of William Jr. It is Lawrence Washington's children that marry into the Dade, Alexander and Foote family. I need to study further to see the exact connection here. The Richard Foote Jr referenced in Grace Powell's will is grandfather to the Henry that married Margaret Colclough Foote Shearin Burford that is all over the NC records with various Rgn folk and whose daughter married Cador Powell. I have a claim in hand that Elizabeth Reagan, daughter of Willam and Amy, died in 1728 at age 11... I will try to find proof. There were two Elizabeths for William. I still believe William Riggin married a daughter of Richard Powell first... 3. M'ellen Wm & Bridget "R" began having children in 1717 with son John who died a yr later in 1818. So Wm was abt 27 yrs old when John was born. Also there is a Jemima "R" who md George Oliver in 1745 and a Margaret "R" who md in 1748 according to St Paul's Parish register, Stafford. They have not been assigned parents that I know of. Do you have the parents for these two? So yes, both Wm-2 & Charles-2 likely had other older children that has not been found or recorded. To my knowledge there was no age limit as to when children could recieve inheritance or gifts. Powell b. 1722 could recieve his inheritance/gifts at age 11. Powell "R"-3 b. 1722 had his first son Wm-4 b. "BY" 1750. He was NOT a minor in 1770 so likely born abt 1748/49, possibly a couple of yrs earlier. Son Powell-4 is listed 1771 Bute Tax list. Powell-4 was likely also born "by" 1750 (not a minor). Sons that were minors by 1770 (according to court doc's in Bute & Warren) were John, James, Charles, and Richard. Also note that Wm's 1770 Will does not mention daughters, only his wife Priscella. Why? He must have had daughters out of six sons. Powell "R" simply died somewhat young abt age 48 and left minors/orphans to be cared for. I see no reason why he is not the Powell-3 b. 1722 s/o Wm-3/Bridget of VA. Which Wm "R" in Surry NC do you think is f/o Wm Powell "R" of Bute NC? Also Powell-3 (b. 1722) name was used interchangebly as either Powell or Wm Powell. His birth rec. of 1722 list him as "Powell" His father Wm-2 list him as "Wm Powell" in his 1746 will in 1770 Bute doc's re: his orphaned sons John & James, he is referred to as "Wm Powell" in 1783 re: orphaned son Richard he is referred to as "Powell" JW Garrett

    3. I have research the William Powell Riggins(he also went by Powell) from Mexico, Mo and have a good file on him. I have always believed that this Powell is connected to my line as was yet another Riggins just down the road from Powell in Mo, his name was Joseph Riggins. I also have a very good file on him. My R"s(Riggin) lived right across the river(Mississippi) in Madison Co., ILL and I have a written story told by my GG Uncle Riggin that this Powell from Mexico, Mo was from our line. I just need to dust off the cobwebs and take a look at it again. I do know for sure that my John and Henry Riggin(I am from Henry) did come out of TN in the every early 1800's and settled in Madison Co. From yet about source of a very old family stories handed down in writing........brothers Will, Joseph and John came north and settled in this area(ILL and MO) John younger brother Henry can be connected to John by court records that I have from Madison Co. I have worked on these lines for years. When I get to my other computer, I will let you know more about this Powell. I do have William Powell Riggins, Will and have land records on him. I live very close to the Court House that I pulled them out of........I will post more about him shortly and Joseph Riggins........Court ------ Original Message ------ Received: Wed, 28 Jul 2010 11:44:18 AM MDT From: james garrett <jwgarrett@webtv.net> To: <ragan-roots@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS] William R's M'ellen OK I'm back Wm Regon's-2 (James-1/Joan) wife was Elizabeth Bridget, thus, I dont think he was md to Graces daughter (a Powell). Wm's-2 birth date, is 31 Jan 1690. His son Wm Powell Riggin-3 was b. 10 Ap 1722 (from St Paul's Parish records). His will was dated 4 Apr 1770 & recorded May 1770 Bute NC. Wm Powell "R"-3 had sons 6 sons 2 of whom were Wm (David?)-4 b. abt 1750 & Powell-4 b. abt 1753. I think that son Wm (David?)-4 b. abt 1750 was in Chatham NC in 1790 & in Pendleton SC in 1800 where he appears with his alleged son Powell Riggins-5 b. 1775 (md to Sarah Holloway). This Wm Powell-5 apparently died 1845 in SC. Also I think the Wm-5 (b. 1755-1774) in 1800 Chatham is W'ms-4 son. The other son (of Wm-3) Powell "R"-4 b. abt 1753 (md to Ruth Trice) was in Orange NC in 1790, 1800, and died 1806. There is apparently another Wm Powell "R" b. 1777 and died 1853 MO. I know nothing more of this person. But why would Grace Powell mention Wm "R" (b. 1690) and his son Wm Powell "R" (b. 1722in her 1734 will? It would be logical to speculate that Wm-2 was a son-in-law & his son was Grace's grandson, and assume Jane "R" was Wm's daughter. Wm did not have a "known" daughter named Jane according to birth records. His only known children were John b. 1717, Powel b. 1722, Keziah b. 1727, Elizabeth b. 1731, Bridget b. 1733. 3. James, Welcome back, Prove to me that Elizabeth Bridget Powell was the daughter of William Powell instead of being the daughter of his brother Richard Powell. William Powell had 2 daus named Elizabeth and I find nothing except web crock saying William R married a dau of William Powell.. Or prove he didn't marry a daughter of Richard and then a dau of William's...one before the other... The Powell that Grace Powell leaves guns and a sword to is old enough to receive them in 1733. The guy born in 1722 was 11. St Paul's records does NOT say William and Bridget had a son William Powell it says " Powel son of William and Elizabeth Bridget Riggins April 10 1722"...no William in kid's name mentioned, and no Powell mentioned in the father's name. BTW, William and Elizabeth Bridget begin having children in 1731...the same year Charles begins.. According to the Charles Co Circuit Court, William Regon was born in 1690 and Charles in 1692. So, in 1731, they are 41 and 39 years old. It is logical there are older children not recorded here. I think the recording scraps we have began then. I think 1722-1770 leaving a bunch of minors for a almost 50 year old is stretching probability...either we have 2 wives and 2 families, or we have two William P's.....I think the William in Surry is dad to the Wm P who dies in 1770. As to the 6 sons...I have loads of paper on James and Powell... that's about it for GOOD paper. We cannot account for any children of Mathew's beyond Chapman's granddaughter, Elizabeth. He and Sarah could have had more. Charles and William both had to have had older children before 1731. We don't know about John Regan's unaccounted 2 sons. We have a William in Surry... 3. 5th child of James and Joan Rgn of Charles Co MD: Charles County Circuit Court, Birth, Deaths & Marriage Records, Liber Q Regon, William s/o James Regon and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 31 Jan 1690 and we have: St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia REGAN, William, d November 21, 1744. Are they the same man? What records have we in between. I am going to begin with Grace Powell. To do that, let's peek at the Powells. There are Powells in Jamestown. I don't know if they are these Powells. Richard Powell Sr arrived sometime in the mid 1600's and settled in Lancaster VA later called Old Rappahannock VA. Then it becomes, or they move to Stafford VA., Westmorland VA, Fairfax VA, Washington VA. I am "told" he died in 1702. I have not seen a will. 3 sons...Joseph disappears. Then we have William and Richard Jr. Both are central to out tale. Richard daughters out. (Grace XXX was Richard's wife.) But the daughters become ours. William weaves in and out of the Rgns. They were people of property. They relate to the Washingtons, the Lees, and the Gales ( a Washington daughter.) They interweave with the Colcloughs and the Buckners. William Powell married Amey Raleigh and has 3 children of note ( there are others.) William's son William Powell Jr married Elizabeth Rgn, daughter of Charles, granddaughter of James and Joan. on 2 APR 1747 in St Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia Amey Powell, daughter of William Sr married Anthony Buckner, son of Peyton Buckner. I mention this because there is a Rev War Vet sitting in early GA with a Rev War land grant named Buckner Rgn. Hmmm. Elizabeth Powell dau by an earlier marriage marries William Rgn, son of James and Joan .I question this. I think William Rgn's first wife was a daughter of Richard Jr's. Has anyone seen proof of this marriage? I have seen an Gloria Dei,Old Trinity, Christiana Church, records for the birth of various children to William and Elizabeth Bridget Rgn, the last posthumous...anyone have that? I just spent the last hour trolling through the Gloria Dei records and came up empty. Anyone? Sigh. Back to Grace Powell widow of Richard. I'm going to do the short version...William Thompson was the assumed son of a New England minister...documented....he took up the parsonage at Surry Co VA...the son, that is. This is documented. lots of court stuff...etc. Very successful... no poor minister here. Rev. William Thompson preached at both Southwark Parish and Lawne's Creek Parish in Surry County. He was born circa 1620 so he came to Virginia as a young man. He later married Katherine Hale, a daughter of Edward Hale. Edward Hale's dated 1675 left William Thompson sole executor and gave him all his estate. The Will was probated May 2, 1676 on the oaths of Mrs. Jane Plow, "the other witness being gone to New England." (Bk. 2, p. 114) His first land grant in Surry was for 230 acres in 1666. The following is quoted from a dear friend, Nola Duffy, a researcher of William Powell Riggins, and a former head of qualification for the DAR of NC: Judging from the tithables in Surry, 1675, the wealthiest men in Southwark Parish appear to have been Lieut. Col. George Jordan, Attorney General of Virginia, with 7 tithable servants. Second was Rev. William Thompson with 6 white servants. About 1679 or 1680 Rev. William's Thompson removed to Westmoreland County, Virginia, where he became minister of Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., where he eventually died. It is not known why he moved to Westmoreland unless it was due to a family friendship with the Washington family there. His family all moved with him except his son John who had married Elizabeth, widow of John Salway. On August 4, 1690, "William Thompson of the County of Westmorland, in the Colony of Virginia, appoint my dear loving son, John Thompson, of the County of Surry, my lawful attorney. (Surry, Deeds etc. No. 5, p. 245). When William's eldest son, John Thompson, made his will in Surry Co. on Aug. 2, 1698, he said in will "Brother Samuel not living in Surry County." William's two sons, Samuel and William, lived in Westmoreland County for about 20 years but moved back to Surry before 1704 when Samuel Thompson was executor of Richard Hargrave's will and William Thompson was a witness to it. (Bk. 5, p.313) When Lawrence Washington (grandfather to George) made his will in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia, on March 11, 1697-8, he bequeathed "to friend, Mr. William Thompson, Clerk, and Mr. Samuel Thompson, each a mourning ring of thirty shillings price each ring." He left "my cousin, John Washington, of Stafford County, and "my friend, Mr. Samuel Thompson, to be my executors, and my loving wife, Mildred, my executrix." The will was proved 10 December 1700 by the oath of Mildred Gale, als. Washington (wife of George Gale), one of the executors, power being reserved for John Washington and Samuel Thompson, the other executor, to act." (Vol. I, p. 299) It appears from this will that Samuel Thompson was in Westmoreland in 1700 and that Samuel and his youngest brother, William Thompson, moved back to Surry between 1700 and 1704. ...... William's brother, Samuel Thompson, must have left him a very well to do man for he and his son, Samuel, were left most of his brother's property. He was the only one of the sons of Rev. William Thompson who left children. He made his will December 20, 1731, probated October 18, 1732. The will is badly torn and partly destroyed. He names son, Samuel Thompson; daughter Katherine; daughter Hannah Thompson (devised 100 acres on land on Deep Branch); son John (10 acres after the decease of his mother and the gun and pistols given him by William Moseley) and grandchildren, Samuel and Mary Thompson (rest and remainder of his estate). The Witnesses were Jane Regan, Mary Regan and Mary Mastin. (Will Bk. 8, p. 240). His son, William, must have been included in part of the will that is missing for it is proven by his brother, Samuel Thompson's will that he had a son, William. In nameing his brother William's children he named William as the thrid child. John Thompson also mentioned brother William in his will. Samuel Thompson (William, William, John), born circa 1686 married Sarah Edwards. He was a witness to Michael Harris' will Jan. 1739 (Bk. 9, p. 464); to John Bamers will on Oct 2, 1731; and to his brother-in-law William Edwards' will on Feb. 10, 1744. There is a deed Oct. 24, 1748 from Samuel and Sarah Thompson to John Thompson, both of Surry for 23 acres, part of 150 acres Samuel purchased of Joseph King and Catherine, his wife, land on east side of Cypress Swamp. Witnesses were John Riggan, Sen., Wm. George, John Riggan, Jun. and Joseph Riggan (Bk. 5, p. 371). On August 31, 1751 Samuel deeded to his brother, John Thompson, 250 acres on east side of Cypress Swamp (Bk. 6, p. 439). It would appear these deed represent the sale of property in anticipation of moving to North Carolina. (Note the references to members of the Riggan family. ) Sarah Edwards was the daughter of William Edwards whose will was dated January 9, 1721/22, probated Feb. 21, 1724. William Edwards' will names daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Ann and Sarah; sons, Benjamin, William and Micajah. He also devised to Francis Regan "one dividend of land lying at the mouth of Susquehannah branch, lower end of his line and the great swamp below his house not exceeding 10 acres, formerly promised to Samuel Kindred." (Bk. 7, p. 389). Children of Samuel Thompson (WILLIAM, WILLIAM, JOHN) and Sarah Edwards: 1. Samuel Thompson 2. Sarah Thompson married Jacob Williams 3. Mary Thompson married Thomas Bell. * 4. Anne Thompson married John Myrick Anne, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Thompson Bell married John Riggan of Warren/Bute NC. The wills of Samuel and William Thompson demonstrate the presence of 2 Johns, a Joseph, a Francis, a Jane, and a Mary Riggan...close enough to these Thompsons to be part of their wills. My, My. In general, the Thompsons marry all the big names in the group who travel together from VA to NC. They are the first I can place both in the Westmorland area of the Powells, Washingtons, Newtons and a handful for Rgns etc. livde and where at least William Riggin died in 1744. The daughter of Thomas and Mary Thompson Bell, Anne, married John Bell of Warren Co NC. They had issue. This is about one tenth of the material I have of Colcloughs, Durhams, Shearins, Thompsons, Powells, Woods, Footes and Rgns etc that we can trace in one big solid lump moving across VA...many beginning in MD, to early Guilford Co NC. Okay, we know a William of Surry VA buys in Bute/Warren NC near men with names that match this bunch, such as John and Joseph, but stays in VA. There is a William Powell that dies in Warren in 1770 leaving a pack of sons, but physically might be a generation off from MD. We know there is a Powell in SC in 1800 with a brief appearance of a William. There is a Powell in NC, son of William Powell who is often confused with the one in SC but is distinct. There is a William son of William Powell, whom everyone seems to insist is William David, though I have yet to figure why. There are a whole galloping bunch of Williams and William Powells who go galloping through TN, KY, TX and heavens knows where else. I have Mary Hinton Kerr's abstracts of Warren/Bute NC... another letter. So, what William, William Powell, Powell Rgn do you have in MD, VA, NC up until 1800. Paper anyone???? Fondly, Maryellen --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He then marries a Woman named Sarah. Mathew and Sarah then sell Waples Toil ( Toyl) to John Chapman who is the son of Richard Chapman, and thus the uncle of Elizabeth Reagon, daughter of Mathew Regon. Mathew seems to move on...don't know where... possible children with Sarah. The Chapman will designates only that Mathew's daughter Elizabeth is Richard Chapman's grandaughter. 3. Do not mix squirmy grandchildren, a laptop keyboard, and a lovely glass of red wine. You end up with a puter with hiccups...no M, P, L, or space bar...sigh...glad to be home... We have in Charles Co MD... Charles County Court Records, Liber M, page 122 28 Sep 1686; cattle mark; James Rigon this means he was born by 1665...to be 21 in 1686...that's the latest he was born. However, he has three kids by this date... so it is probably more practical to say that James was born by 1660. then we have: Charles County Circuit Court, Birth, Deaths & Marriage Records, Liber Q Regon, Mary, d/o James and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 28 Aug 1683 Regon, Margarett, d/o James and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 12 Feb 1684 Regon, John, s/o James Regon and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 24 Mar 1685 Regon, Matthew, s/o James Regon and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 24 Apr 1687 Regon, William s/o James Regon and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 31 Jan 1690 Regon, Charles, s/o James Regon and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 20 May 1692 then James Regon 15.119 I £3.6.0 Dec 10 1696 Appraisers: Patrick Anderson, Evan Jones, and finally, James Regon 16.247 A CH £3.6.0 Apr 1 1698 Administratrix: Joan Regon, wife of John Wood, Not a whole lot of information. Please keep in mind that Joan XXX Rigan , as a widow, had 6 children from ages 13- down to 4. This is not an old lady. She was probably about 30 -32 when James died. I am trying to keep track of the Rgn half siblings in this mix. John Wood married 3 times, and I question who the mother of his various offspring are. Also, keep in mind, that the Rgn children are with their mother...where she goes, they go also...geography, geography... Between 1705 and 1706 John Wood, who still sits in Charles Co MD, gives away portions of the 2900+++ acres he owns in Stafford Co VA....this is just across the Potomac folks...so is Fairfax co and Westmorland probably less than 1 -1/2 hours by sail. John Wood gives dau. Mary and her hubby Edward Williams 400 acres, Dau Elizabeth and her hubby John Killingsworth 400 acres, and his son John Wood Jr 400 acres, and the daughter of James and Joan Regan, Mary and her hubby Samuel Durham 200 acres. Okay, blood is thicker than water. I believe these three Wood children are all by John Wood's first wife, Mary XXX. John has 5 other children and 2 more wives. The children are Jane, Elijah, Anne, Hannah, and Sarah. The wives are Joan XXX Regan Wood and Margaret Philpott Wood. ( remember, it is Elijah Wood who married Jane Powell, daughter of Grace XXX Powell, leaves kids when both Elijah and Jane died young.) we know bupke about Anne, Sarah, or Hannah. John Wood Sr's will is dated 1709, but finally filed 1716. Did John died in 1716, or did it take until 1716 for the last child to come of age and the estate to be settled? John Wood has at least 1500 ++ acres to go in Stafford for his 5 younger kids and Margaret and HER HEIRS gets a lousy 50 acres? I'm thinking Margaret is not the mother of those 5 kids, Joan is. I think the estate of John Sr was held from file till all were of age, and that John SR actually died in 1709 when it was written, not the 1716 filing, but we need to see original...fat chance! Not unusual though. I am working my way toward the identity of Grace Powell and or Joan XXX Regon and William Powell Riggin. Yeesh! As a note of interest, Mary Wood Killingsworth/Chillingsworth left the estate her father gave her to Grace Powell's daughter Jemima Derrick, not her full sister Eizabeth ( bro John was dead), or any of her half siblings...why? Mary Wood Killingsworth, Grace Powell and Elijah Wood all died one after another in the same year. Why was Elijah's mother in law the executor? Was there no one else? Mary's husband Edward was already dead. Grace's husband Richard was dead... hmmm Now we come to a funky complication...Elizabeth XXX Wood, widow of John Wood Junior, was Admix. of his estate. According to the Md Gen'ly Bulletin mentioned and other sources which I have yet to read first hand, Anne Ross is actually Anne Regan Ross oldest child of Elizabeth XXX and John Regan. James Ross is her husb. James Mankin is John Wood III"s uncle in law, married to Jane Wood whom I believe is a daughter of Joan XXX Regan Wood and John Wood SR...she is at least a daughter of John Sr's. We need to keep an eye on the many Mc Daniels and the Rose and Fernandie who appear so prominently...more on them later. ( one may have married a Regan daughter/sister) All this flap is to tell you that the oldest son of James and Joan Regan left a son, who left two sons...grandsons of James and Joan XXX Regon. We do not know their names...one could be a William...odds are, one is a John... I will comment, by the 1790's, the Rgn's have seemingly disappeared from Charles Co MD...However, in nearby Caroline Co is a John and a William Ragan who in 1820 supply a bond for the estate settlement of Richard Talliaferro. The Talliaferros marry into the Newtons, Powells, Berrymans, Woods...you get the picture. I believe the grandsons of James and Joan via John Jr stayed in MD, and that this is them...they...whatever... However, tomorrow we move on to Mathew, and he is a different story.. please fight with me, or add to the proof...I don't really care. BTW, a fellow researcher objects to my claim that Margaret Colcloughs's grandmother Hannah was a Chapman. He would prefer her to be a Walker. So far, neither of us is convincing the other... .Fondly, M'ellen

    3. I am not sure where I will begin. For those of you who are new to us, I will not quibble about spelling. I have one proven family that begins as Regon, and becomes Regin, Ragen, Regains, Raggans, Reagens, Riggins and Ragan. We research Rgn’s.   I feel that if we can sort out NC of the 1700’s, we will hold the key to the ancestors in VA and MD and the descendents in KY, TN, AL, GA, MS, LA…etc etc…..sigh.  This round I am concentrating on 2 factors…#1… 17th and 18th century R’s. I don’t want to deal, for the moment, with any R that wasn’t recorded in this country before 1800. #2… I’d like to major in Williams’ We have enough William R’s in 200 years to stuff our own boat.  Speaking of boats, if your 17 ancestor cousins came over together on the ark…save it until you have proof.  No family legends for now ( wait till we get truly desperate.) Also, if cousin Vinney married Gloria R in 1952 and the dog bit her and she died before you could ask who her parents were, please be patient till we try to beat the Colonial bushes first.         Any claims I make I can prove, unless I state otherwise. I will not prove every niggling thing at this time, as the e-mail won’t handling it all. LOL. I said I was going to discuss William R’s..and I will…sorta…after a few amazing women.   Margaret Colclough. Margaret is doggone near 150 years of R. history wrapped up in her personal story. Margaret married first, William Durham, the grandson of Joan XXX Regon Wood, widow of James Regon of Charles Co MD, and second wife of John Wood of Charles Co MD. William’s parents were William and Mary Regon Durham.( his grandmother was a Chapman) Mary Regon Durham was the oldest child of James and Joan Regon, who’s birth was recorded in1683 Charles Co, MD. In 1707, John Wood, second husband of Mary XXX Regon gives 200 acres out of 2960 acres that he owns in Stafford Co VA., to Mary Riging  his daughter in law ( step daughter) and husband, Samuel Durram. They leave for Stafford Co VA. There they have 6 kids. Son William Durham marries Margaret Colclough in Stafford Co., VA . Margaret is the daughter of  the amazing Rachel XXX and Benjamin Colclough. Rachael leaves a 1748 Stafford Co, VA will that names people all over the Eastern seaboard including her son William, 2 Bowling daughters, a daughter Jane Newton, and daughter Margaret Durham. Margaret Colclough Durham’s brother William marries a woman names Mary Rogers… more on her later. William and Mary Colclough have a daughter Margaret Colclough who marries Henry Foote. ( Aha, James, I have your attention) In 1763 William and Mary Colclough sell their VA land, as do Henry and Margaret Colclough Foote. They immediately  buy in Granville Co NC. When Henry Foote dies Margaret Colclough Foote marries Henry Shearin. He dies and she remarries a third time to a Burford without issue. Margaret’s various Shearin (2) and Foote(9) children marry Shearins, Bells, Riggins and Powells. Indeed, a granddaughter, and a gtgranddaughter of Margaret’s each marry a Littleton Riggins… one a son of Francis Jr and one a grandson of John/Bell. All of these families seem to plop down from MD to Stafford, Westmorland, and Surry VA. Most go on to NC.   I can trace Bells, Thompsons, Pegrams, and Powells and some Raggans together from Westmorland and Surry VA to NC…Granville, Warren/Bute, Orange. I can trace Regon, Colclough, Wood, Marshall, Chapman together from MD to Stafford, Westmorland, Surry VA, to Granville, Halifax, Warren/Bute NC. Of the six children of Joan and James Regon of Charles Co, MD, John is the only one whom we can prove died in MD. Margaret is lost to us. John left unnamed minor children ( 1730)who were raised by their mother who remarried a James Carrell. Mr Carrell was still in Charles Co in 1745. We don’t know about the kids. Mathew ( with a Chapman wife) sold out in MD in 1752 and was lost  to us. hmmm ( dau Eliz stayed In MD) Mary Regon Durham died ,we assume, in Stafford VA. William…ahhh, I think William died in Surry VA…but we will come back to William… Charles Regon/Reagon , youngest of James and Joan, had,I believe ,10 children in St Paul’s Parish, Stafford Co VA. One of those children was a Charles born in 1734, whom I believe, but working on proof, was the Rev soldier in NC. And…. Charles has a daughter Jane who married a Samuel Evans. Please note ( drum roll) the William Powell Riggins that leaves land in Bute/Warren Co NC to his 6 sons, mentions land to son Charles , including the plantation whereon Jane Evans dwells. Yeah Jane. William Powell buys land in Bute/Warren and it was delivered to Charles Raggans….James, do you have this…I saw it last nite and it’s gone poof….this is not his son Charles, as the latter is minor at Wm P’s death…but a trusted Charles…hmmmm   We haven’t mentioned the Grace Powell will in Stafford.VA wherein she legacies William, Powell, and Jane Riggins and the children of Eliah Wood… witnessed by William Powell and EX John Washington, or the will of same John Washington ( grandfather to Geo. ) who legacies the Thompson brothers who marry the Bells and the Riggins, and the Shearins and move to Warren Co NC. There is a Joseph in VA also, but that’s for another day. Okay, this is an opening salvo. I believe I can overwhelm us with proof that the William and William Powell R’s of Surry and Warren are of the line of James and Joan. I have a strong suspicion that John/Bell may also be of Joan/James, but he might be Daniel/Elizabeth of the mouth. I do not believe John and Francis are brothers, but their fathers could be. There is too much trust here not to be kin. I have found 2 new Johns. One is an adult in Charles Co MD who is witnessing when all the known Johns are dead or too young. Charles has a John. John might have had a John, or Mathew. There is a Joseph in Surry that I feel is Joseph/Mary XXX b.1710/12 and of the house of James/Joan….not the Joseph/Anna XXX of Joseph with the John, Richard, Ralph.   It does occur to me, that if I cannot definitely slip John/Bell and Francis into the house of James/Joan…I might have to concede that Daniel/Eliz of the mouth and James/Joan are related…Oh heavens…Sam will never let me live that down… I still don’t know where Daniel II died…LOL One further note for newbies….Daniel/Elizabeth of the mouth… this was a Daniel Rigen at the time of Bacon’s Rebellion in VA whose wife Elizabeth was whipped for verbal sass. Quaker women were treated by their men as equals, and they often spoke up. Daniel was fined for not doffing his cap, again a seeming Quaker, or just stubborn…they seem to be a couple protesting politically . Because of ole Liz’s punishment, I have dubbed her “Elizabeth of the mouth”… there being too many Elizabeths. I also ID various men with their wives’ maiden names…thus we have John/Bell ( Ann Bell wife) , or Francis/Pegram etc. it sorts out similar men and their sons.   I needed to start somewhere….let’s try to take our time and not scattergun… one William at a time…. Then we can see who goes where. Greetings to all, M’ellen

    3. Monday morning July 05, 2010 Dear Ragan/Reagan researcher(s), Your question regarding Spencer Ragan in the Ragan-Roots discussion is most welcome, our family traditions in the family of Timothy Ragan in Sevier County, Tennnessee have not indicated that Spencer Ragan is the brother of Timothy Ragan who served in Revolutionary War from the State of Maryland. It is totally unknown to us in our family. Here is the my note that I have been given on this Spencer Ragan and his family. As of now, I do not know if this Spencer Ragan fits in our first Timothy Ragan's family in Anne Arundel County and Baltimore County in the State of Maryland. But I am still keeping it in the back of my mind as I continued to do research on the Ragan/Reagan families there. However, it is possible that he MAY BE (but no proof) the youngest son of Cornelius Ragan who married Anne Ayton in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. This Spencer Ragan was born circa 1766 in the State of Maryland. He is too young to have served in the Revolutionary War. SPENCER RAGAN born: circa 1766 Maryland died: 30 May 1851 Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois Marriage: circa 1790/95 ELIZABETH SEYMOUR born: circa 1776 Virginia died: bef 1850 Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois Family: [Reconstructed from contemporary records] It is subject to further corrections.-DBR 1. 1. [RAGAN-ROOTS] William R's
    2. Maryellen Horrigan
    3. Hi...My apologies to all for being absent for such a long period. The death of my only much younger sibling had me staring at walls. Moving right along.... William...not a rare name,,, unfortunately.... I'd like to talk about William R's...I don't care about spelling...remember there are no spelling rules until the late 19th- early 20th century... I'd like to discuss William R's between 1660 and 1790...in this country... I give fair warning...THERE IS NOT A DOUBT IN THIS STUBBORN HEAD THAT James and Joan of Charles Co MD, and William of VA and NC ( and Wm Powell) and Powell of SC, and Francis of NC are all one family. I have not a doubt that there is a generation missing or half a generation by 2 wives, between William of MD and the William Powell who leaves sons in NC. ... I am sick at all the dumb Powell Riggins cxxp on line wherein everyone mixes Powell R of SC with Powell R, the son of William Powell of NC. The Powell in NC married Ruth Trice and she outlived him ...he married no one else. The guy named Powell Riggins in SC married Sarah Holloway and never left SC...Yikes...can't these dumkoffs handle 2 men of the same name??? Okay, I'm calmer now. We have in Charles Co MD... Charles County Circuit Court, Birth, Deaths & Marriage Records, Liber Q Regon, William s/o James Regon and Joan Regon of Nanjemy, bricklayer, b. 31 Jan 1690 A big lump of Powells, Colcloughs, Footes, Riggins/Regons/Raggans, Shearins , Durhams, Powells, Bells Woods, etc etc left Charles co MD and went to Stafford Co VA. Stafford Co divolved into many VA counties. By the second or third generation, the members of these families are selling out and buying in Granville Co NC. I have reams of proofs which I have this week condensed into 100 + pages of tight solid data. 1760 is roughly the date they all enter Granville. The original Granville Co NC was most of the state. It was repeatedly split. I can trace exact members of these families though this journey...except ours. However, I find it stupid in the extreme to suppose the entire cast of characters is the same though 3 states...except the R's. Like some kookoo bird laid a strange R. family in the cluster nest, just to fool us...nope...that dog won't hunt. So...we have In Stafford Co VA the will of Grace Powell, widow of Richard Powell, mother in law of Elijah Wood, son of John Wood of Charles Co MD and , I believe, Joan XXX Regon Wood, widow of James, who married John Wood after James' death. If I am correct, the William Regon mentioned in this will is the son of James and Joan and the half brother of Elijah Wood. At the time of Grace Powell's will, Elijah Wood and Jane Powell Wood are both dead. We know this because Grace had to adminx Elijah's estate in lieu of next of kin.: === STAFFORD COUNTY VA WILL BOOK M; 1729-1748; THE ANTIENT PRESS pp. 145-147 May 23d 1734 We the Subscribers in Obedience to order of Court dated the 8th of May instant being first sworn by vertue of said order mett at the house of ELIJAH WOOD Deceased and appraised his Estate as follows .. The birth date of 1690 is adjusted to the modern calendar, so was originally 1689. I have a birth date of 1688 for the father of William Powell Riggins of NC. I have no idea where that date came from...anyone?? It looks to me that either William Regon only has 2 kids that Grace Powell gives a hoot about, or, he only has two kids. He could have remarried and had more, but these two were hers... Cut me some slack here... I'm speculating... Let me propose that the Powell in SC is Grace's grandson, mentioned in the will. Now, the kids in the NC will would be grandchildren of William in Stafford and nephews of Powell in SC. Can anyone do anything with that? What do we do with the William in VA who buys in NC, and the William who shows briefly in SC with Powell and the William who people keep referring to as William DAvid...has anyone every found a thing with William DAVID on it ? We all carry a birth date of 1722 for William Powell Riggins, the guy with the NC will in the 1770's in NC. Where did we get that> For what it is worth, yes, John Washington is one of THOSE Washingtons. There are many more interconnections. We can speculate on Grace's maiden name... So please folks, punch away...let's see if we can make this work...or not...M'ellen
