    3. One more possibility, James, son of William Powell Rgn who died in 1770, married Jane Dickson. They had four sons... ( this is an old file, so take with a grain of salt) the sons were James Joseph, Powell, Thomas, and Green. All born in Orange NC...which was from other co's. James had Rev War Bounty land in TN, but I am not sure he lived there. However, Jane, his widow died there. Which probably means she lived with a kid. She died at like 106 years old still trying to get the government to pay a pension. 3. Back in the mid 90's, when I first tried internet genealogy, Court was one of the first folks I met. I was green with envy at the organized work team he and the two gals had. We didn't know a whole lot about NC, and couldn't connect. Court taught me a lot about running around those brick walls out there, and about picking up every odd bit you can find... one day I'll fit somewhere. I still save Farris and Brashear notes, even though they aren't mine. They are old friends. Court, question, what do you have for paper in either TN or KY, hints, good guesses...counties? 3. FOR THE RECORD THESE ARE MY NOTE ON 4 PEOPLE THAT I BELIEVE ARE BROTHERS OR ELSE VERY CLOSE TO EACH OTHER. I WORKED WITH 2 OTHER WOMEN FOR YEARS ON THIS MESS AND I AM STILL NOT SURE IF MY HENRY RIGGIN AND HIS BROTHER FOR SURE JOHN RIGGIN OR RELATED TO JAMES JOSEPH RIGGINS OR WILLIAM POWELL RIGGINS( I HAVE SEEN IT ALSO AS JUST POWELL RIGGINS) . I AM NOT EVEN SURE THAT JAMES AND WILLIAM POWELL OR POWELL ARE RELATED YET TO MY JOHN AND HENRY. NOW SEE MY NOTES ON WILLIAM RIGGIN THAT I BELIEVE IS THE FATHER OF MY HENRY AND JOHN. NOTES ON WILLIAM RIGGIN: ELLEN GASKILL DAY GRANDDAUGHTER OF MAHALA RIGGIN WAS TOLD THAT THREE BROTHERS WILL, JOE AND JOHN LIVED IN N.C. MOVED TO TENN, KY AND THEN MOVED NORTH. JOHN SETTLED IN MADISON CO.,ILL, WILL AND JOE SETTLED SOMEWHERE NEAR ST. LOUIS. THEIR FATHER WAS WILLIAM RIGGIN, A REVOLUTINARY WAR VETERAN. INDEX OF RIGGIN FAMILIES, BY MRS DANIEL STONE KELTE, PAGE 10, MENTIONS A LETTER WRITTEN BY MISS FRANCIS RIGGIN TO MRS. KELTE. SHE WROTE THAT HER GREAT GRANDFATHER, THOMAS MAGNUS RIGGIN OF ST. LOUIS, MO., SAID THAT HE HAD BEEN TOLD THAT THREE BROS. WILL, JOE AND JOHN CAME FROM N.C. IN THE EARLY 1800'S. THE THREE BROTHERS WERE BORN IN OR NEAR RALEIGH, N.C. NOTE THE 2 DIFFERENCE SOURCES. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE TWO KEY STATEMENTS. WILLIAM POWELL RIGGINS, JAMES JOSEPH RIGGINS AND JOHN RIGGIN FROM MO AND ILL WERE ALL 3 BORN IN NC. WILL, JOE AND JOHN............MAKE GOOD SENSE TO ME. WILLIAM RIGGIN - FROM MADISON CO., ILL HISTORY PP. 51 SEPT 6, 1819 APPOINTED CONESTABLE SILVER CREEK TWP, PUT UP BOND AND SECURITY OF $500.00. NOTES ON HENRY RIGGIN: HENRY RIGGIN BURIED AT MARINE CITY CEMETERY IN MADISON CO., ILL. WE KNOW FROM HIS HEAD STONE THAT HE WAS A NATIVE OF TENN. AND IT IS SAID THAT HIS FATHER WAS WILLIAM RIGGIN WHO WAS A REV. WAR SOLDIER. THERE ARE MANY INTERESTING STORIES OF HENRY THAT WAS FOUND IN THE S.I.U. LAW LIBRARY IN EDWARDVILLE, ILL. ALSO SEE MY BOOK FOR MORE DETAILS. IT APPEARS THAT HENRY WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL FARMER AND HAD MONEY FOR THESE DAYS. HE DIED VERY YOUNG AT AGE 42. HE WAS INVOLVED IN A LAW SUIT BETWEEN HIS BROTHER JOHN AND WIFE MARGARET. OF COURSE HENRY TAKING THE SIDE OF JOHN. NOTES ON JOHN RIGGIN: JOHN RIGGIN WAS ALSO MARRIED TO EVA COPENBERGER MARCH 9 1840 IN MADISON CO. ILL. THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN - SUSAN B. 1839 AND JOHN B. 1843. JOHN WAS DIVORCED FROM MARGARET EITHER IN 1839 OR 1840 AFTER A BITTER COURT BATTLES. RECORDS OF THIS ARE FOUND AT THE S.I.U. LAW LIBRARY AT EDWARDSVILLE ILL. THESE RECORDS ARE ALSO HELD BY DOROTHY BANGERT, C. C. CONKWRIGHT AND VIRGINIA DEWAN. THESE THREE PEOPLE HAVE ONE OF THE BEST COLLECTIONS OF RIGGIN'S PAPER KNOW AT THIS TIME IN MADISON CO., ILL. IN LEGAL COURT PAPER FROM MADISON CO., ILL IT STATES IN THE DIVORCE PAPERS THAT JOHN AND PEGGY WERE MARRIED IN TENN IN 1807 AND MOVED TO MADISON IN THE YEAR 1816 OR 1817. JOHN LEFT HIS WIFE ABOUT THE 28 OF APRIL 1838 AND WAS LIVING WITH EVA COPENBRERGER IN THE STATE OF MO. ACCORDING TO DIV PAPERS ON JOHN AND MARGARET FARRIS RIGGIN. THEY MOVE FROM TENN IN TO ILL IN EITHER 1816 OR 1817. JOHN AND MARGARET "PEGGY" WERE MARRIED IN 1807 IN TENN IN THE SAME PAPERS. JOHN RIGGIN A PETITIONED TO BE A VIEWER OF A ROAD PP. 256 SEPT 4, 1821 NOTES ON POWELL OR WILLIAM POWELL RIGGINS: FROM THE WILL OF POWELL RIGGINS FROM THE MEXICO, AUDRAIN CO., MO. COURTHOUSE: I, COURT CONKWRIGHT FOUND THIS ON 1 APR 1991 AND HAS A COPY OF IT. I POWELL RIGGINS OF THE COUNTY OF AUDRAIN AND THE STATE OF MO, BEING OLD BUT IN SOUND MIND AND DISPOSING MEMORY FOR WHICH I THANK GOD AND CALLING TO MIND THE UNCERTAINLY OF HUMAN LIFE AND BEING DESIROUS TO DISPOSE OF ALL SUCH WORLDLY ESTATE AS IT HAS PLEASE GOD TO BLESS ME WITH, DO GIVE AND BEQUEATH THE SAME IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER TO WIT: THAT IS TO SAY I DESIRE THAT ALL MY JUST DEBTS HE PAID. 2ND: I GIVE A BEQUEATH TO MY BELOVED WIFE PATSY RIGGINS ALL OF MY ESTATE, REAL AND PERSONAL AND TO MIXED AND TO ALL INTEREST THEREIN TO HAVE AND TO HOLD ABSOLUTELY TO DO WITH AND DISPOSE OF AS SHE SHALL THINK FIT DURING HER NATURAL LIKE AND IF IN CARE MY SAID WIFE, PATSY RIGGINS, SHOULD DIE WITHOUT ISSUE THEN THE BALANCE OF THERE SHOULD BE ANY LEFT AT HER DEATH, TO BE EQUALLY DIVIDED BETWEEN MY GRANDCHILDREN, THAT IS TO SAY, THE CHILDREN OF JAMES RIGGINS AND JOHN MINER AS I HAVE GIVEN IN MY LIFETIME TO MY SON JOHN RIGGIN THAT I EVER INTEND HIM TO HAVE IN MY LIFE OR AFTER MY DEATH; ALSO I HAVE GIVEN TO MY DAUGHTER NANCY BRASHEAR ALL I HAVE EVER INTENDED HER TO HAVE IN MY LIFE OR AFTER MY DEATH. IN TESTIMONY WHERE OF, I POWELL RIGGINS DO SET MY HAND AND SEAL THIS 22 DAY OF FEB 1853. WITNESS BY JOHN A PEARSON AND NANCY PERSON. I SUBSCRIBED THE TESTATORS NAME AT HIS REQUEST JOHN A PERSON. POWELL WAS ALSO KNOWN AS WILLIAM POWELL RIGGINS, ONE OF THE 3 BROTHERS. HE ALSO HAD LAND IN THE FOLLOW AREAS OF MONROE CO., MO. SECTION 10 TWP 52-53 RANGE 10 ALSO A PIECE AT SECTION 35. GEORGE F BROWNING E 305.6 POWELL SIGNED WITH A "X" ON THE LAND RECORDS IT APPEARS THAT PATSY RIGGINS WAS WITH CHILD THE YEAR THAT POWELL DIED. SHE REMARRIED TO A L. FISHER IN AUDRAIN CO. AND THE CHILD WILLIAM RIGGINS IS SHOWN LIVING WITH HER AND NEW HUSBANDS FAMILY. THIS IS IN THE 1860 AUDRAIN FEDERAL CENSUS. 9/22/2007 Maryellen take a look at this land plot record that I found in Mexico, Audrain Co., MO in 1991. The more I look at it the more I am now wondering if just maybe the William P. Riggins and Powell Riggins are not the same person. I have always believe that it was the one and the same William Powell Riggins. You will also remember that a William P. Riggins witnessed the buying of land of my Henry Riggin in Madison Co., ILL. Again I believe it was the one and same from Audrain. A brother to Henry and John Riggin. In the will of Powell Riggins that I have it is signed Powell and not William. Now it could be the William Powell Riggins who was the son of James Joseph Riggin of Cole Co., MO. This W.P.Riggins was born in 1813 and the land records I see was bought in 1840, which mean he was owing land next to his uncle Powell and is the right age to be buying land. You will also see a John Brashear who is listed on one of the records, who was the son in law to Powell Riggins. John Brashear married Nancy Riggins Powell daughter. If this is correct then we can see a connection for sure between the James Joseph Riggins son William P. and my Henry Riggin in Madison Co., ILL. Do you follow my line of thinking? Court p.s. If he was William Powell Riggins it appears that he only went by Powell. NOTES ON JAMES JOSEPH RIGGINS: FROM THE HISTORY OF BOONE CO., MO. BY WILLIAM F SWITZLER.: JOSEPH RIGGINS, WAS BORN IN N.C., BUT WHEN QUITE A YOUNG MAN EMIGRATED TO KENTUCKY, WHERE HE MARRIED MISS BARZILLIA LAWLESS, THE MOTHER OF THE DOCTOR(G W RIGGINS). THEY LIVED IN KENTUCKY FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND IN 1816 CAME TO MO. AND LOCATED IN HOWARD COUNTY, AND BUILT THE FIRST CABIN WHERE THE TOWN OF OLD FRANKLIN WA AFTERWARDS BUILT. THE SITE OF THE PRESENT CITY OF BOONVILLE, OPPOSITE THE TOWN OF OLD FRANKLIN, WA THEN A DENSE THICKET, AND THE INDIANS ROAMED THE FOREST AND KILLED THE SETTLERS AT THEIR OWN SWEET WILL. MR RIGGINS HAD NO NEIGHBORS NEARER THAN THE FORTS ABOVE AND BELOW HIS BACIN, AT TOO GREAT A DISTANCE TO AFFORD HIS CONSTANT PROTECTION. SEVERAL OF HIS NEIGHBORS WERE KILLED BY THE INDIANS, AFTER THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAD BECOME MORE THICKLY SETTLED. HE LIVED AT OLD FRANKLIN ABOUT FOUR YEARS AND THEN BOUGHT THE FARM UPON WHICH DOCTOR G W RIGGINS WAS BORN. HE SHORTLY AFTERWARDS MOVED TO COLE CO., MO, WHERE HE DIED IN 1849 IN HIS SEVENTY-THIRD YEAR. HIS WIDOW SURVIVED HIM SEVERAL YEARS AND DIED AT THE AGE OF EIGHTY YEARS. IT IS BELIEVED THAT HIS GIVEN NAME WAS JAMES JOSEPH RIGGINS AND HE LATER DROPPED THE JAMES. IN THE 1819-1826 MO TAX PAYERS FROM CALLOWAY CO., MO THE NAMES OF JAMES AND POWELL CAN BE FOUND. 3. Just got home from my B-Day dinner and will start working on something to post. I have all my notes that sources on the folks from MO and ILL. This is not a easy one to follow so I am sure there is going to be a lot of questions mainly due to all the same first names used over and over again. I still have some very good emails that I posted before that I should also dust of and resent for those who are new on this site. So that is one of John Wood's half sibs.( If you care, the Fernandies have some connection to Durhams via Neales and the Brawners) Some MD Gen Bulletin of Feb 1985 is cited as having carried an article offering proof of 5 kids, not four...John, Mathew, Charles, Ann, Mary. That's my next task after all this company leaves. What does it offer as proof... Of the original 6 kids of James/Joan... I lose Margaret. There is an unidentified Margaret in Stafford that marries in 1748. James' Margaret would be long in the tooth for this, but.... who knows. Mary and Samuel Durham and their heirs I can take from Charles Co MD to Stafford VA to Bute/Warren Co NC dragging the Colcloughs, the Chapmans, Thompsons, Footes and others right to where they marry a bunch of Riggans named John, Francis, and Littleton. Trust me, I can paper town hall with these guys. Samuel died in Stafford in 1735 . Their son William married Margaret Colclough, who's grandmother is held by many to be a Chapman, and goes to NC. Mathew dies in 1716 Stafford Co VA. There is a later Mathew that in 1756 Charles Co, MD sells to John Chapman the land that John's father Richard left to Elizabeth Reggen dau of Mathew. ( granddaughter of this Richard Chapman) There is no sign this Eliz. dau of Mathew ever married. I suspect this Mathew is either a second marriage son of Mathew Sr., or the son of John who died in 1728, I don't know where he went. John II is still in MD in 1737 witnessing whatnot. I did not stay with him as I was headed out. ( there is a John and a William in nearby MD handling a Talliaferro will. Probably from this bunch as Talliaferro is mixed up with these Charles Co Rgns earlier. There is a William and a Charles in Stafford VA, in the Saint Paul's and the Overwharton Parish's Registers. The Overwharton, which I have not seen in original, seems to be a real piece of work to decipher... all the early records have question marks. This is where Wm Rassan is listed with a marriage to Priscilla Manzey... ( There are many Massey connections in this bunch, a possibility)( One of the first REDIVISIONS of Stafford involved cutting both long skinny tracts of Stafford and King George across the middle and making two short fat sort of squarish counties wherein people had a prayer of getting to the court to record their whatevers. Along with this division, Saint Paul's and Overwharton parishes reinvented themselves as the north and south Parishes for Stafford.) There are a ton of kids listed for William and Elizabeth Bridget Riggin beginning in 1717 and for Charles and Elizabeth Riggin beginning in 1731 in Saint Paul's.. Charles begins his family more than a decade behind William. Either he was younger, arrived later, or was socially challenged. That would mean, if I am correct and this is James' grandson, James1, John2, Charles3, that Charles of James is missing. Not my immediate problem. NC has lots of extra Charles'. I am working on William. I don't know where or when the Charles in Stafford, whomever he is, dies, not my immediate concern... I am working on William. In most databases, William, son of James/Joan married Elizabeth Bridget Powell, daughter of William Powell. Well she was a Powell okay, but she wasn't William Powell's daughter, I believe she was his brother Richard's daughter. In the Register, William Powell's daughter Elizabeth dies at 11. Richard Powell died intestate. His widow, Grace, left a will: STAFFORD COUNTY VA WILL BOOK M; 1729-1748; pp. 164-165 In the Name of God Amen This 1st day Of October 1734 I GRACE POWELL being viry sick but of perfect mind .. do make this my Lest Will and Testament. I believe Grace is tokening sons in law with the cattle .As a matter of interest, Grace Powell's daughter Jane married Elias Wood, a son of the John Wood that married Joan XXX Regan, widow of James...that lived in the house that Jack built....no that's another tale... Grace had to admin Elias's estate as everyone else was dead. We believe the William Riggin is the son of James married to a dead dau of Grace and Richard Powell( Elizabeth Bridget?). Jane Riggan is possibly Wm and XXX's daughter. We believe the Powell is William Powell, who was born in 1722 Stafford, and dies in 1770 Warren NC with six sons...William, James, Powell, Charles, John, Richard. (There is no birth record for Jane. But we have a gap between the records of Charles Co MD and those of Saint Paul's VA. We really don't know where she fits. A weakness here...sorta... There is also an unclaimed Jemima, and a Margaret. But, I am doing William. Elizabeth Bridget Riggin and a host of others die in this 1732/33 time period.( She is possibly childbirth or a combination of that and whatever was going around.) William Riggan himself dies in 1744 Stafford, and bequests daughters and one son, William. For fill in, Grace Powell has some connection to John Washington, gtg'father of Geo. as do others here. They later either get redistricted, or move from Westmorland VA to Stafford VA. Samuel and William Thompson ( part of cluster) I trace for years. They are bequested in Lawrence Washington's will. ( son of John above and grandfather of Geo)Their own wills ( Thompsons)and land records ( in Surry Co VA) are witnessed by various John, Francis, Jane, and Mary Riggan's ( and a Joseph)... Then almost the whole bunch shows up in Granville Co NC and then Bute/Warren. There's a lot of palaver from Surry VA to Warren NC with land sales etc. Then William Powell Riggins dies in 1770 Warren, NC, with a wife Priscilla and six sons named William, James, Powell, John, Charles, and Richard. ( Up until now, Richard was not a Riggin of this line name, but both Chapman and Powell were Richards)( There was a marriage for the Jane in Stafford VA, so this Jane Riggin isn't her. ) (Just an aside, John Riggan of Granville/Bute/Warren Cos in NC, who married William Thompson's granddaughter Anne Bell, is presumed to have been born about 1725. John and Elizabeth XXX Wood Regan Carroll's son John had to be born between 1715 and 1728) ... just building a house here...everything that fits, even loosely, is fair game. Aren't you glad this was the short version? I am trying to find one continuous Rgn string...and they aren't even mine!... but we have to sort out NC where at LEAST 3 Rgn lines collide. My guy is rumored to have walked through and picked up a wife. If I can eliminate one bunch of scalawags, I can see who's left. There is an elephant in the room. If I build a case of cluster genealogy for James and Joan Rgn, and claim that where the cluster goes, so go the men and women of James and Joan, then I must also deal with the problem of Daniel Riggin in Surry Co VA. If the presence of cluster names of Charles MD, Westmorland/Stafford/Surry VA, and Guillford/Bute/Warren NC are not acceptable as coincidence, then the concurrent presence of Daniel Riggin/Elizabeth of the mouth of Surry must be dealt with. Yuck! I believe William Powell, dead in Warren Co NC in 1770 is the grandson of James and Joan via son William and Elizabeth Bridget Powell Riggan. I believe John of Warren Co NC who dies in 1803 Warren Co NC may well be the grandson of James/Joan via son John, but I'm not yet doing Johns, I 'm doing Williams. I believe Francis of Warren Co NC who dies in 1818 Warren Co NC is still a wildcard, but closely related ( Francis is a Powell Name.) ... But I am doing Williams...

    3. James, yes... from our various floors/decks...we overlook the Kentucky hills, hills, hills... over the river with 7 colorful and different geometric bridges to span it... This is house #10 for us and the journey wasn't easy... I am separated from who and what is dear to me in my Yankee homeland... except for my Jim... but oddly, this has been the highlight home of my life... I hate the architecture, the period of the décor, and a thousand picky things... I had to toss a lifetime collection of antiques meant for a home with 7 foot ceilings in this 12 foot behemoth. The house is on a big city hill both side to side and front to back. It is 15 feet by 75 feet and has been a hoot to set up... Sort of a big colorful eclectic bowling alley.
