Since there is only one John Rgn. listed in the 1784 tax list, this is probably John, Jr. and is the father of Nathan, Jesse and Owen, which would indicate that John, Sr., died 1771-1784. The John Rgn. listed in the 1794 tax list could be the son of Nathan Rgn. and husband of Patsey Rgn. listed one place down from Nathan Rgn. in the 1800 Census of Person Co., and who with her new husbasnd, William Jones, accompained Nathan to Dickson Co., TN area.in ca 1805. So do you think likely that the John Jr (with John Sr in 1770 Orange) b. by 1749 could be a brother of Owen, Jesse, and Nathan? And where did this John Jr go to aft 1770? Thus John Sr b. by 1728 had sons b. late 1740's through 1750's? Timothy Ragan is not a sibling of Nathan, Jesse and Owen. He is the Timothy Ragan who settled in Sevier Co., Tn. and the ancestor of Donald B. Reagan. 1830 Know Co., KY census: Owen Ragan 102100100001-2100100111. Most posts states his birth ca 1753. There is no age stated in his RW pension application. Jesse Ragan RW pension application in Person Co., NC, 19 Sep, 1832, states his age as "about seventyeight years". ca 1754. Nathan Ragan: 1830 Dickson Co., TN census: 0311200001-00010. The 5-10 males are Nathan's sons Moses, Washington and George W.and the older are his stepsons. Birth 1750-1760. The Patsey Ragon listed in the 2nd down from Nathan Ragon in the 1800 Census of Person Co., NC. Who married William Jones in Orange Co., NC ca 1803, and the couple came to Dickson Co., Tn. William Jones died bef. 1818, Patsy Jones and Nathan Ragan sign the estate settlement papers as co- administrators. I have no record of the children listed with her in 1800 census. Nathan Ragan was appointed guardian of Middleton, Richmond and Elizabeth Jones minor children of William Jones, desc, by Dickson Co. Court 7 April, 1823. Neither Martha(Patsy) nor her decendants are listed as legatees in the 1846 Lawsuit concerning Nathan's estate which very probably excludes her as a daughter of Nathan Ragan She may be the widow of Nathan's son John ( I have no verification of either) but the fact that two of his sons named a son John. ----- Original Message ----- From: "james garrett" <jwgarrett@webtv.net> To: <ragan-roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 7:21 AM Subject: [RAGAN-ROOTS] 1755 Granville & 1770 Orange NC John Ragon > > Ok > Owen Rgn says he was born in Granville NC. Ok Owen Rgn says he was born in Granville NC. When was he born? I estimate 1750's. Was his brothers Nathan & Jesse b. 1750's as well? If they were born 1750's then likely the John Ragon of 1755 Granville is the father b. by 1734. Then in 1760 Granville we have a John Riggin entering 600 acres Parish of St John on N side of Watry Run. Which John? John/Ann Bell or John f/o Owen, Nathan, Jesse? In 1770 Orange NC John Jr & John Sr are petitioning. Ok is this John Jr an older sibling of Owen, Nathan, Timothy, Jesse? If this is correct then John Sr had to be born by 1728 and John Jr b. by 1749, likely the oldest son. Then Owen, Jesse, Nathan, and Timothy all b. 1750's. Can anyone confirm this? JW Garrett
Will use the blackberry for awhile-yuk! Amos was James's youngest son, NOT his father. There was an Edward on tax lists in Rowan in the 1760's who very well may hv been James father. A Peter and William were also in the same local- Rich Fork. I looked through Bute/Warren records prettily heavily at one time to see if the Ragans might hv come from there over to Rowan. Even tho they hv the same naming patterns, dates don't match. What is weird is that the Gilliams were there! They moved to Rowan, beside the Ragans that were already there, promptly married their daughter off to James Ragan and sold him land! Seems there would be a connection, but I can't find it. On top of that, the Gilliams and Ragans are living beside Paynes (not related to mine) that probably came from Bute. I hv no idea where the Peter Ragan went after Rowan-(1784). When I get my laptop up I'll hv more dates. Susan Pratt Oh when u talk of James and John in bute, are u talking abt Wm Powell's orphan's? There is more than one John in NC...the James name is thinner... right now we are trying to connect the John who married Anne Bell, dau of Thomas to someone, anyone, volunteers? He is NOT the son of Joseph, or the son of Wm Powell Rgn. He is born about 1725 and pops up on a Granville tax list in 1755 NC with Francis tagging along behind. This Francis and John interact with the same folk that leave Charles Co MD and go to Stafford/Prince George, Surry VA and then show up in Warren/Bute NC. Durhams, Colcloughs, Footes, Powells, Woods...etc. We are pretty convinced that the Wm Powell who leaves the pack of sons in 1770 Warren/Bute is definitely the Powell, son of William born in Stafford VA in 1722. We believe the William who dies in 1744 Stafford is the son of James /Joan of Charles Co, VA. So who are the rest of these clowns in NC.? James/Joan had other kids...only one of whom seems to have stayed in MD...so where did everybody go???? Who has the missing Charlie and Mathew?? I think John/Bell is the guy in 1748 Surry Co VA listed as John Jr... okay...he is with John Sr, Joseph, Jane, and Mary....and the answer is ........ BTW, Francis is not young enough to be John's son...could be a brother... could be a cousin... or a hitchhiker...If we knew who the Warren/Bute bunch were we'd be a lot closer to naming TN, KY, and the other counties of NC.... I think... M'ellen I leave tomorrow for Sarasota. ( the snow melts in NH every Jan...back there in late Feb) in the Sarasota Library is that enormous 2 vol. unabridged Powell tome put out by heaven know how many Powell researchers. The first entry is a Riggan marriage...any way...I'll take a poke and see what their geography looks like. -----Original Message----- From: ragan-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ragan-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of ssmcs@winco.net Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2011 3:01 PM To: ragan-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS] James Ragan b.7 Dec. 1748 Will use the blackberry for awhile-yuk! I have that Sarah Gilliam b. 1751, wife of James b. 1748 parents are Jesse I. Gilliam b. @1730 and Jane unknown b. @1732. My great uncle told me many years ago that his great grandfather, Isaac Payne came from High Point, N.C. The Payne's arrived in Indiana about 1834 and sold property in Rowan Co., NC in a deed dated 1831 but not recorded until a later date. I also found in the Recorder's Office of Lawrence Co., IN the land patent to Isaac Payne and the reference to the date of the same property to a Cooper. This later information is off the top of my head. Isaac Payne's sons, James Payne was a miller and Jesse Payne was a carpenter. I'll back track a bit here, Elizabeth Ragan's book mentioned that there were Quakers in one of the families and until I find my Amos Ragan book I cannot remember exactly which one it was. Thanks for the replies from Mary Ellen and JW I didn't expect to hear so promptly. Oops! James Ragans birth date should have been shown as 2 Dec 1748 and I have his parents as Amos Ragans and Elizabeth Payne. No documentation at this time. I think the Bridget in Overwharton who marries John Flitter is Bridget, the dau of Elizabeth Bridget and William. I get that she would be 11 for the birth of Winifred...if she was hers.... revolting by modern standards, but I have one other 11 year old that is heavily documented...??? Faintly possible... I do think the 1733 death is Wm Pow's wife Eliz Bridget...but, Bridget is not in the will...There is also Margaret who had a base born child and later married...there is the Mathew dead in 1716. He would have been 28 at his death and could have fit a few kids in before 1716. That would make the ladies a bit long in the tooth at marriage, but perhaps they were cross eyed or something...The Winnifred who married Oliver and names a kid Elisha rings all sorts of bells. Elisha Wood being a possible child of Joan Regan Wood...yeah, I know, John Wood leaves him in his "mother Margaret's care" blah! John also leaves Margaret and "her heirs" a lousey 50 acres when the man owned half a county. If harles2 was the father, and he died before 1716...we are in the same boat for the ladies being 30ish at marriage...not likely. The 1716 date is the start of the St Paul's Parish records. Of course, Charlie. could have lived elsewhere. I will say, we have not scrubbed the ground for siblings of JAmes such as nearby Dorchester MD, but let's keep going as we are and just acknowledge that there is another unidentified player/s in the mix as we leave MD for Stafford and then move out to NC. -----Original Message----- From: ragan-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ragan-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of james garrett Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2011 9:12 AM To: ragan-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: [RAGAN-ROOTS] Charles Rgn b. 1692 As suggested there was likey a Charles who began having children by 1731 (Elizabeth) who was a 3rd Gen from James-1/Joan. IF this Charles was s/o Charles-2 b. 1692, the timeframe would not work. Given that Charles-2 was born 1692, his children would have been born no earlier than 1713. So if a Charles-3 was born say 1713 or 1714 this Charles-3 would not have children no earlier than 1734. So a 3rd gen Charles-3 (if son of Charles-2) would not work given that Elizabeth was b. 1731. But we do have Jemima & Jane who had to be born by 1728 given their marriage date of 1745 & 1746 respectively. Could these be Charles-2 daughters? But again there would be appox a 10-13 yr span from 1713 to abt 1726 depending when these girls were actually born. Charles-2 could have had other children born bet 1713 & 1728 that have not been found or recorded. Also the Winifred Rgn b. 1744 could not be the d/o Bridget b. 1733. Bidget would have only been 10 yrs old when she had Winifred. There was a Winifred & John Oliver whom had a daughter Elisha Oliver b. 1768. Could this Winifred be the Winifred Rgn b. 1744 md to an Oliver? Note that Jemima Rgn md a George Oliver in 1745. Also there was a Bridget Riggins (b. by 1738) who md a John Flitter 16 Mar 1755. to whom does she belong to? Is she the Bridget b. 1733?
