I, too, would be interested in the many different variations of the name. My grandmother used RAGAN as her surname and her youngest brother used RIGGINS. Just one more thing to make our searches difficult! Linda
I descend from: Mildred REAGAN; Richard Judson REAGAN; Daniel D. RAGAN/REAGAN. My mother always said Daniel D. changed the spelling of his last name from RAGAN to REAGAN around the turn of the century because he did not want to be associated with a "Ragan down the street that was not of a good reputation". This is not an exact quote. My mother passed away in 1989 and I never checked to determine where she got her information. Is anyone familier with this line and can you tell me exactly when the name change occurred and why? Thanks, Fred Hagan
04/22/99 Hello RAGAN-ROOTERS! I know, I know ... it's been awhile since I've had anything to say to all you cousins. Several of you have sent me private emails asking if I was alright, and I'm doing fine. Sorry about that y'all. I haven't been ignoring you, honest. I've just been busy. I have added a few new names to our database, not a lot though. About a month ago I was busy getting the business taxes out (I hate taxes). They were due March 15. Then I had quite a few things to do with the business. There was the annual prom on Saturday Mar 27th, or maybe it was the 29th (with age the mind goes first). Anyway we were *very* busy with that. First we had to get ready, get the background set up, the lights tested and set ...etc. Then about 10:00 am that Saturday morning they started coming in for their packages. It wasn't real busy at first, but we did have about a dozen couples & individuals come through by Noon. It started getting real busy about 3 or 4 pm. We were really truckin' until about 7:30 that evening. It was probably the best Prom we've ever had. Probably a couple hundred kids came through. So after the biz taxes and the Prom I relaxed for awhile. Then it was almost April 15th and the personal taxes were due. So I had to get busy with all that mess. Anyway it's over now and we're getting a couple grand back from Uncle Sam (wish I'd gotten busy earlier). Oh well.... And this week I've been called to Jury Duty in Anniston, AL. (The reason I was in Anniston is because this is a Federal District Court.) I was called to Jury Duty abt 25 years ago (when I lived in Michigan), but never did have to serve. I was just on the panel. This time I've been chosen and it's been interesting. I think tomorrow will be my last day. It should finish up (I hope, I hope). I was on recess today so we drove home last night and worked at the studio today, and it was *very* busy. While in Anniston Monday & Tuesday we stayed in motels there, but tonight we're staying in Gadsden, AL. There's a *big* race this weekend in Talledega, AL and you can't find a room anywhere near there. So we'll have to get up early tomorrow and make a 30 mile drive to Anniston. Anyway here I am again. Our group has been steadily growing over this past month. When I checked our subscriber list a week or so ago it was pushing 280 members! It may be over 280 by now, I have had a few new notifications from Roots-Web this past week (they notify me whenever we get a new member). So welcome to all our new cousins. I'd like to invite you all (that's pronounced "Y'all" around here) to submit your known "RAGAN/REAGAN/REGAN/RAGON (or any other spelling) lineage. That reminds me ... when we checked into our motel room this evening the young man at the desk said "I'm a RAGAN too, but my name is spelled REAGIN!" So I, of course, asked him what he knew about his ancestors. He said that his dad is into their family history and he is starting to get the bug (hee, hee). Before I leave in the morning I'll leave him a few Family Group Sheets & Pedigree Charts to get him up and running. Give him a few months and he'll be bitten by the bug. I told him abt RAGAN-ROOTS, gave him one of my cards and told him to send me an email so I could send him the instructions for joining our list. Maybe we'll see him here one of these days. Okay, let's get down to business. The other day I had someone contact me abt their family and they sent me this: =========== Descendants of John Reagan Generation No. 1 1. Was the Abigail RAGAN who married Nathaniel HOOD in Greene Co. TN in 1795 the daughter of Darby RAGAN or Jeremiah RAGAN and Abigail HARRISON? These men were brothers, so ultimately so the RAGAN line is the same, but I really want to get to work on the mother's line. So I need to find Abigail's parents once and for all. :-) I have seen both versions, neither one with adequate proof. I know that she died between 1830 and 1840 in Maryville, Blount Co. TN and is buried there. Unfortunately, the dates her tombstone are illegible. Abigail's husband, Nathaniel HOOD, was born between 1770 and 1780 according to the 1840 TN census. Some researchers have said Abigail was born in 1778, but they can't furnish proof of that. I know that Darby is a nickname for Jeremiah, but since this family had both that doesn't help. I really want to know what proof the various researchers give for Abigail's father being Darby or Jeremiah. Both camps seem so definite, yet no one can furnish reasons or proof. Help!!! The Ancestral file and IGI in the LDS (familysearch.org) archives are huge and can supply lots of clues because you can bring up AREAS of search all over the world. But just remember that the information therein is only as good as the people who submitted it. Often they have NOT been thorough researchers, so consequently you need to supplement what you find there, with research of your own. It is a great tool, but please don't believe every family connection you find. Assumptions have often been the easy path. Annie

Hello Cousins, I rcvd this email this evening from a Judy BROWN. She's not a member of our group but gave me permission to share THIS INFO with you. I THOUGHT SOME OF YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED. Michael ================ Hello Michael, I will start tonight by sending you a quick note and then add to it in a few days when I start my vacation. Robert A. Ragan who married Martha Emaline Neas is the son of Jacob P. Ragan, son of Robert Ragan SR., son of Darby Ragan(that I got from your notes) I know this to be true as Robert A. and Martha are my great-great-great grandparents. Alice Cordelia, their daughter, married George Peter Brown from Greene County Tennessee. My grandfather, Robert Harlin Brown was born and when he was about a year old they went by covered wagon to Sheridan Oregon. More children were born, then Alice died, leaving George Peter with alot of children to raise. He returned to Greenvillle and remarried and had at least three more children, Liston, George, and Vivian, who married Walter Snow. George married Mildred Bible and they are both still living in the Greenville area. Vivian has passed away and so has Liston. Alice Cordelia died in Sheridan on May 1, 1902. For awhile, her father, Robert, lived in the old soldiers home in Washington D.C. o(or Maryland)I am not sure which. At that time, my grandfather, (his grandson) had moved to WashingtonD.C. and had met his wife to be. Her father knew Robert and since her father was a printer, the two men would sit together and Robert told all of his experiences in the Civil War. My other great- granpa, wrote every thing down, word for word, had his son who was an artist, illustrate the story and then he published the book. A few years ago, my father and I went to the library of congress and found the book, and received permission to copy it. (My father was also a printer) He made several copies for the family and I have the little book. It is entitled ESCAPE FROM EAST TENNESSEE by Capt. Robert A. Ragan. In this little book Captain Ragan tells the story. He states on the first page, of Chapter 1 " I was born in Greene County, Tennessee, near the banks of the Nola Chucky River. My father moved in 1845 to the banks of the French Broad River, in Cocke County, Tennessee, shortly after I was born. I was the oldest of six children, namely myself, Alexander,Laura, Creed, Mary and James Ragan. My father was a county officer for years, in fact, until the late war. I grew up in the country and attended muster." In the 1850 census, Jacob P. Ragan is listed as being married to 'Charity' and their children are listed. It is the same listing as I have in this little book. I do not yet know Charity's last name. You have Jacob P. listed as the son of Robert A. Ragan Sr. but wife is listed as unknown. According to the Cocke County Census, her name was Charity. I have quite abit more to write, but thought this might whet your whistle. Do you still have the documents that were sent to you from Wisconsin about Capt. Ragan? If so, and if you still are willing to send them on, I would appreciate having them. IThank you , in advance, hope this information is of help and value to you. Judy Brown

Hi I am hoping to find the parents of my Mary Elizabeth Ragan. She was born in 1853 in TN. Both of her parents were also born in TN according to the Clark Co IN 1880 census. She was married in Jefferson Co IN on 23 Jun 1874 to Thomas H Stoner. Thank you Valerie Stoner Colburn
I'm still seeking info on John M. RAGAN, b. 1862 in GA, married Rose THOMAS (b. 1872). Their children: Zora (b. 9/15/1885), Lula (b. 12/4/1887), William, Raymon, Paul, and John (John spelled his surname as RIGGINS). Zora was my grandmother; she married Benjamin F. FREE. She and her husband lived most of their life in Floyd County (Rome), Georgia. Thanks for any help, Linda
18 Mar 1999 Hello again Cousins! Here's another family I found in our database that looks like it could tie into Sharon & Harold's families. I dare you to look this one over, compare it to the other two I sent, and tell me there isn't some kinda link here. And I'm not certain there isn't a few other possible links for them in the database also. But as I mentioned before I just can't catch all the 'possibles'. That's going to have to be up to you. I'm the collection point for RAGAN/REAGAN/RAGON/REGAN/RIGGAN (...etc.) family heritage. So look this lineage over and then take a minute to read the SOS msg I have at the end of this email (it's important). ======================= 1 George W. Ragan 1848-1926 Catherine Ragan b. 9-22-1788 d. 10-28-1861 Based on these records and family accounts of the Ragans, I've reconstructed the family of George W. Ragan as follows: 1st wife: Eliza Jane ....., b. NC married ca. 1830, NC Children: John W. b. ca. 1832, NC married Mary Hicks (b. ca. 1837, TN) 1-17-1856 W. S. b. ca. 1834, NC married F. C. Daniel 6-10-58 Margaret b. ca. 1843, MS George W. b. ca. 1849, MS Marriage records for Old Tishomingo County indicate that the women shown above living with George W. Ragan in the 1860 and 1870 census are his 2nd and 3rd wife. G. W. Ragan married Jane Miller 1-29-1857 (no children from this union) G. W. Ragan married Sarah Floyd 8-11-1863 Children: Warren K. b. ca. 1865 Kitty M. b. ca. 1866 James b. ca. 1869 My great, great grandmother, Mary Eliza Ragan, married Joseph Pleasant Reynolds, the son of a plantation owner in neighboring Lauderdale Co., AL. They married before the Civil War (1855) and had three children before the war began: George Pink (b. 1856), John Randolph (b. 1859), Hugh (b. 1861). After the war, they had Mollie (b. 1867), James (b. 1869) and Joseph Pleasant, Jr. (b. 1870). Joseph Pleasant (Sr.) was killed in November of 1870 or 1871 (shot off his horse, according to family lore) and Mary Eliza returned to Mississippi to raise her family near her father and siblings. She died in 1910 and is buried in the Blackland Cemetery (near Booneville, MS) along with two of her children. It appears from the data that George W. Ragon married Eliza Jane in North Carolina about 1830 and they had their first four children there. They then moved to Mississippi between 1838-1840. The 1830 Census for NC shows me a John Reggon in Chatham Co. and a William Regon in Davidson (or Davie?) Co. I did not find a George W. as the head of a household, so I'm stuck for the moment in trying to establish his North Carolina roots. Hoping some of these family names and ages might ring a bell with other Ragan researchers and they can help me out! -------------(From Michelle 8/1997)----------- Family story: George W. Ragan was a merchant and farmer, involved in some type of retail operation (lumber?) with a partner named WEAR. My first finding of George W. Ragan is in the 1840 census for Panola County, MS. In 1850 he is living in Pontotoc County, MS, in 1860 in Tishomingo Co., MS (right next to the border of Tippah Co.), in 1870 he is in Prentiss Co., MS. If you can believe the "personal worth" data in the census, George W. was a pretty well-off guy for the times, with an 1870 report of $8,000 worth of real property and $10,000 of personal property (was better off before the War). His daughter, Mary Eliza married Joseph Pleasant Reynolds, a son of Hugh Riah and Elizabeth Hamm Reynolds of Lauderdale Co., AL. Joseph survived the Civil War but in 1870 or 1871, he was shot and killed. The reason and the perpetrator remain a family mystery. However, there were a band of criminals the locals called "The Buggers" who terrorized the area during and after the Civil War, and it's likely Joseph was shot by a member of this gang. Shortly thereafter, Mary Eliza hitched up two wagons, loaded them with her possessions and her children and drove about 50 miles back to Tishomingo or Alcorn Co., MS where her family lived. There she raised her family and never remarried. Mary Eliza's sister, Martha, married W. F. BLASSENGAME, who likely was a relation to Joseph Pleasant's grandmother, Phoebe Jane Blassengame HAMM. The Blassengames and Hamms were early settlers of cNairy/Wayne/Lawrence Cos., TN. ---------------------------------- I have not been able to track George W. Ragan prior to 1840, nor determine his parentage or siblings. There are a number of Ragans in the northeastern Mississippi Counties in the 1840s and later, but I've not been able to determine any relationship. According to a history of Tippah Co., MS, a very early settler was a Daniel Ragan who established a trading post within the Chickasaw lands (in violation of the law) as early as 1820. That site became known as "Ragan's Corner" and it is very close to the Tippah Co./Itawamba Co. line. I haven't been *real* active with the database these past few weeks (although I have started entering a couple hard copy lineages that came through the snailmail). The reason is that I've been busy working on taxes (yuck). But at least the business forms are now on their way to the IRS (Infernal Revenue Service). And the personal tax forms shouldn't be too difficult (since I didn't make anything last year ;-) BUT I HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM .... A couple weeks ago I started having some trouble with my computers. Does anyone out there know anything about modems & Macs (Help-help)??? Here's what happened: 1. My desktop machine (Radius 81/110) stopped connecting to the Internet. 2. I substituted my laptop (5300 PowerBook) and it worked for awhile then quit. 3. I brought an old modem (14.4bps) home from the studio and tried it. 4. The desktop did the same thing (nothing). It seems to connect to the ISP in Chattanooga, but won't make the actual link to AOL. 5. Tried the laptop on the old modem and it worked (Ya-Hooo!) 6. The next morning the laptop couldn't connect (rats!) 7. I took the laptop over to my Dad's and tried it on his modem. It worked just fine. 8. Next I took both modems over to Dad's and his computer connected without any problems. 9. Go figure ... 10. Maybe I should move (along with my computers and modems) in with Dad ;-) Maybe next week I'll get a chance to take the computers to Huntsville and have the guy in the service dept. at MacResource take a look at them. (Those new iMacs are looking better all the time;-) If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate some help. ============= For a human Reply: Send a Self-Abused Stomped Antelope To... Michael W. 18 Mar 1999 Hello Cousins, This evening I was able to take the info our cousin "Harold in New Orleans" sent us and input it into our database (let me tell you-this baby is gettin' HUGE! ;-). One thing you should understand is that the bigger this database gets the easier it becomes to input some lineages twice. Or at least parts of some lineages may get a double entry. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Let's say that you send me your known ancestors back to a James REAGAN who was born 1845 in Charlotte, NC. And someone else (let's call her Sally) might have her lineage traced back to a William REGAN born 1795 in Frederick Co. VA.. Now if Sally happens to have all the children in each family coming down through the present (her generation) we just might find a possible link somewhere down the line. If Sally knows that her William married in 1815 and had 6 children including one named Joseph born in 1820, and she knows that Joseph married in 1844 in Charlotte, NC and had several children, one who was named James, b. 1845 (or 1844 or 1846) then BINGO! Here's a possible link! Now you can rest assured that I'm NOT going to make this link in our database until someone does their homework and can assure me that this link is good (proven). In fact I HAVE to depend on all you cousins to do your own homework (research) on each family lineage you submit. I just CAN'T do it all. I'll be your collection point for all your RAGAN families. And this database is yours anytime you want it. You can download a GedCom from Bill REAGAN's site and look it over until your hearts content. Bill's site is at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billreagan/ (Before you go there and download it though I should warn you that I will be sending Bill the latest copy in a little while, say within a month. My goal is to have at least 30,000 people in it when I do. Right now there is a little over 29,400.) Now, getting back to my story ... It just so happens that one of our cousins, Sharon ZONN ([email protected]) and I have previously discussed the family that "Harold in New Orleans" sent us today. Sharon can trace her lineage back to a Michael REAGAN (nice name ;-) who died abt 1849 in GA. And his wife, Catherine aparently married a William REAGAN (perhaps a brother?) after Michael died. Michael and Catherine had several children including a William E., Morgan, Harriet, Steven D., Rebeka, and a George Washington REAGAN. (Another nice name and that reminds me, I heard a good one the other day I wanted to tell you:) --Now Let's Get This Straight-- Washington was the President that couldn't tell a lie. Nixon was the President that couldn't tell the truth. and Clinton the President that couldn't tell the difference. ;-) ---------------------------- Oh well, I'd better get back to this family story. Anyway, as I said, Sharon & I have been discussing Harold's family and the possible link to hers. It seems that several of the names in Harold's family occur in Sharon's family too. When I started entering it this evening I found I had already put some of it in the database a few months back (I think she had sent it to me when we had started looking it over). So tonight I found it and added what Harold sent us. I'll export a report and paste it into this email and then I'll export another report and send Sharon's family in another email. These reports will include all my notes too. ============>Harold's family<============== 1 Morgan RAGAN Birth: ca 1750-60, IRE/VA Death: May 1839-40, Lincoln Co NC Burial: Ragan Cem, Gaston Co NC Email from [email protected]: ================ Michael this was posted from Harold : He also sent the following transcription: "Pioneer MORGAN RAGAN, SR. ca 1755-1839 OLD RAGAN FAMILY BURYING GROUND About one mile northeast of this sacred place in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetry, in an isolated, wooded field near the waters of Little Catawba Creek, is located the family burying ground of Morgan Ragan, Sr. (ca 1755-1839), one of the pioneer settlers of [what is now] Gaston County, North Carolina. Of Irish lineage, he likely migrated from upper North Carolina or Virginia prior to 1790 when the first United States census locates him in adjoining York County, South Carolina. He married ca 1793 Olive, whose maiden name is thought to be Allgood. He received landgrant No. 987 in Lincoln County, now Gaston, in 1794 for 100 acres on the south side of Little Catawba Creek and landgrant No. 1218 in 1796 and purchased additional land in 1797. Morgan and Olive Ragan were the parents of six sons and three daughters: Michael is believed to be an older son who would have ben born between 1794-1800 and who may have moved south after 1830; William was born ca 1797 and died between 1840-1850; a daughter of unknown name born between 1794-1800; John Allgood (1801-1823); Morgan, Jr. was born between 1800-1810 and died between 1840-1850; George Washington was born December 14 1806 and died May 25, 1886 in Prentiss County, Mississippi; Daniel Franklin (1808-1872); Eleano (1809-ca 1869). Some lines of the family died out. At least three of the nine children moved south and west where their descendants are found in abundance. One of the sons, Honorable Daniel Franklin Ragan, remained in Gaston County and is buried in this plot. In the old Ragan burying ground are known to be buried Olive, "Consort of Morgan Ragan, Sen." (February 21, 1770-October 13, 1832); John Allgood Ragan (May 25, 1801-January 3, 182);a William Berry (1766-November 3, 1780); and Morgan Ragan, Sr., whose tombstone has been lost to time. Others thought to be buried there include Morgan Ragan, Jr. and Ornor D. Ragan. Honor and Glory to Bod Alone This Tablet Was Plaed Here By Robert Allson Ragan January 1, 1990." [from article in 1964 the old Ragan burying grond not far from Union hurch on farm of Mr. Leonard Ferguson-H] I could not believe it as I was reading it. This sounds so much like my Michael, time frame and everything. My Michael's children names were William, Morgan, Stephen (Daniel), George Washington. What do you think. He may be that Michael instead of the Michael from Warren Co. which I was begining to doubt. But fact my Michael left and went to S.C. and then Ga. What do you think?
