    3. Hi All, I haven't really worked too much on my Regan line before. However, I noticed the posting from Randy and went to his website. I feel that my Regan women may somehow tie in to his Regan's so thought I would list them. Elizabeth (Betsy) Regan b 1825 m Russum Shoemaker b 1825. They were married June 1846 in Lumpkin Co, GA. Mary Catherine (Polly) Regan b ? (sister to Elizabeth) m Oliver Shoemaker b 1827 (brother to Russum). They married in 1848. Both couples moved to Jefferson Co, AL shortly after marrying. I think that there was also a Regan brother who married a sister of the above Shoemaker men. I had not yet gotten back to this generation as I have been stuck on several people from the following generation, but couldn't pass up this opportunity after seeing Randy's post and website. My line Russum and Betsy (Regan) Shoemaker >Charles T. and Sarah (Alley) Shoemaker >George and Adelaide (Edwards) Shoemaker >Milton G. and Bonnie (Allred) Shoemaker >me - Patricia (Shoemaker) Patteson Any help on identifying the parents of my Regan women would be greatly appreciated. Pat

    3. Hi! I just subscribed to RAGON-ROOTS and I have great expectations. I have always been interested in genealogy and picked up bits and pieces of my family history from time to time, but never really did anything in depth. Now I am a senior citizen, semi-retired and I feel it's time I did something about it. Here is all the Regan history I know from my line. My paternal grandfather was Patrick Henry REGAN b. Boyle, County Roscommon, Ire. m. Ida Ada SAGE Dec. 31, 1890 in Naugatuck, Co. d. in Naugatuck 1950? Records show that my grandfather was baptized in St. Josephs parish Boyle, County Roscommon on Aug. 27, 1863. Oral history says that he came to the US as an infant or very young child. His father was Edward Regan and mother was Mary Murray? Regan. Patrick was also accomonpied by a brother Edward, who settled in Union City, Co. also a sister Mary who married APPLEGATE and lived in White Plains, N.Y. There was a younger brother Thomas born in the US. I have no further information on this line. My mother told me that the name had been Reagan but the "a" was dropped. There is also a family story that 1 to 3 other adults accompanied the family on the voyage but later on returned to Ireland. I hope someone out there knows us! I would really like to find some cousins. Thank You! Margaret

    3. Here is an interesting bit of information I found in my files. It is from Mary Alice Ragan Green, Florahome, Florida. "My grandfather, Daniel D. Ragan, gave land and built a hard shell Baptist Church named Shiloh in N.W. Henry County, Ala. in the 1800's - now in Houston County, Ala. Some time after this, with his family, he moved back to Ga. around Cuthbert. A few years later, he moved back to Ala. "The church, in the meantime, had been changed from hard shell to Freewill Baptist. He remained there a few years and some time around 1898 or 1900 ?, he moved to Ga. again. This time settling in Cairo, Grady County, Ga. "In 1921 Oscar remodeled the church. In 1926 and 1927 he built a new church. Some time in the late 1800's Oscar furnished the land and built the Ragan School House about 5 miles North of Shiloh, in Henry County. In 1901 the school burned and he again furnished the material and a new site, rebuilding the Ragan school. In 1928, the school closed and the children were then bused." Fred Hagan

    3. Hello Everyone, I am new to the list and am related to the RAGANs through my mother who was a REAGAN. For many years mother gathered data about her various lines and kept the information in a well used file cabinet. It was several years after she died in 1989, and as an act in memory of her, that I decided to sort through the data and send as much as possible to the Morman Library so others could benefit from her effort I found some marriage/wills/deeds but much of the information is in letters she wrote to and received from relatives, friends, and fellow researchers. I cannot properly support all of her research but, with the List Owners permission, ocassionally I will send the list excerps from her files. Perhaps someone can get value from it and possibly get the clue they need to continue a line they thought dead ended. Here is a piece mother published in the Genealoby Anyone section of the Cairo Messenger, Cairo, Georgia. "RAGAN FAMILY CEMETARY, CALHOUN COUNTY (Former home of Hamilton Augustus RAGAN, ancester of Jewell Reagan WALKER, Margaret Ellen REAGAN and Mildred Reagan HAGAN) This cemetary was researched and recorded by Margaret Ellen REAGAN and sister Mildred Reagan HAGAN, Jacksonville, Florida on August 10, 1973. Property now owned by Mr. Eubanks, Edison, Georgia. Hamilton Augustus RAGAN (headstone reads H.A.) born May 4, 1841, died May 17, 1920, age 79. Jeanette E. Coleman RAGAN (headstone reads J.E.) born 11/4/1842, died September 15, 1928. Mac RAGAN, born December 29, 1889, died February 21, 1907. Twins: Exor and Ester RAGAN, born March 28, 1876, died September 20, 1876. Miss Eunie RAGAN of Atlanta does not recall these twins dying at the same time, but these dates were on one headstone for both children. Herman RAGAN, born September 29, 1895, died April 8, 1897." I'll tag your lineage with your name & email address, plus I'll be glad to include your snailmail address and phone number too (if you want). 3. I checked with my Aunt who confirmed our family had been told by a relative that the name was changed around the turn of the century by Daniel D. Ragan. His son, my grandfather, used the name REAGAN as did my mother. It is interesting, though, that Daniel D. RAGAN, if he did indeed change the spelling of his name, was buried under the name RAGAN. Because of this, I am suspecious of the 'ol wives tale about the neighbor down the street with the poor reputation. My RAGAN/REAGAN ancestry, as far as I havae it, is: John RAGAN, b. abt 1794, South Carolina. Daniel D. RAGAN/REAGAN, b. 21 June 1850, Randolph County, Georgia, m. Sarah Ellen CULBRETH. It just 'ain't suppose to happen that way'. My sister Niki used to live in Littleton. She lived just a mile or so from that school. She sent the following story to me tonight. Take a few minutes to read it. If your faith is anywhere near as strong as this young lady you'll be just fine. =========== This was from the Rocky Mountain News: Martyr for her faith Youthful Christian confesses her belief to rampaging gunman, then pays with her life By Carla Crowder Denver Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer A Columbine killer pointed his gun at Cassie Bernall and asked her the life-or-death question: "Do you believe in God?" She paused. The gun was still there. "Yes, I believe in God," she said. That was the last thing this 17-year-old Christian would ever say. The gunman asked her "Why?" She had no time to answer before she was shot to death. Bernall entered the Columbine High School library to study during lunch. She left a martyr. Though lots of fellow Columbine students already were strong, vocal Christians, Bernall's confession in the face of death has inspired them to keep the faith no matter how bad it gets. "She did something that one of the thieves did when Jesus was on the cross. She admitted she believed in Jesus Christ before she died," said Joshua Lapp, a 16-year-old Columbine sophomore and member of St. Philip Lutheran Church. Crouched in the library, hiding from the gunmen, he listened as Bernall was shot to death after her confession. How would he have reacted? "I would've done the same thing she did," Lapp said. He only knew Bernall from passing in crowded school hallways. But his voice was still halting as he spoke of her. "It was just ... she's ... after she said that, you know she's now in a better place," Lapp said. "She died for her faith. That's why she died and that's how she lived her whole life. She was a martyr for Jesus," said Crystal Woodman, a Columbine junior and member of Bernall's youth group at West Bowles Community Church. The girls used to volunteer together, reaching out to homeless people downtown. Woodman, too, barely escaped from the library, and only after asking God to "send your angels down." Teens like Lapp and Woodman aren't blaming God for Tuesday's violence. They're thanking him they're alive. "Everybody that made it out, they know they made it out for a reason, or somebody was watching out for them," Lapp said. Churches where these students worship have had countless vigils, memorials and counseling sessions this week. On Thursday, another prayer session sprung out of the mud and muck at the park across from Columbine. At first it was just a small circle. The Faith Christian School girls soccer team from Arvada had come over in their maroon sweats to pray at the site. Hundreds of people buzzed around them: friends, students and strangers hauling posters, flowers and letters to the giant memorials growing in the park. The girls prayed and the circle grew. Twenty kids, then 50. Holding hands, singing hymns. Young voices praying aloud under a cold, slate gray sky. Matt Baker, a tough-looking kid wearing baggy jeans, a Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirt and a yellow baseball cap turned backward, prayed: "If we lean toward you God, we know you're going to lean right back." The circle kept getting bigger, crowding out the television crews scrambling to go live. A hundred kids. Maybe 120. Finally everyone grew quiet, captured by a sweet, high-pitched voice. "The only way you'll get through this is through Jesus. If you don't have Jesus, get Jesus," she said. "You don't know if you have tomorrow." It was the voice of Sam Matherne, a student at Cherry Creek High School and a member of the Orchard Road Christian Center. She, too, was a friend of Rachel Scott. "My best friend died in there, don't let it be in vain," Matherne said. Nearby, raindrops pattered on the memorials, smearing posters and letters. A letter to Bernall and to God, written on white notebook paper, stayed dry under a tent. "This sweet, innocent beautiful girl (is) one of your most precious creatures and the world has suffered a great loss." But, as these teens see it, according to Bernall's friend Woodman: "Now she's in heaven. She's so much better off than any of us."

Just one more thing to make our searches difficult! >Linda Linda, It does make it a bit difficult, true, but it makes it interesting too. I wonder how many different ways there are to spell our name. Over the years I've seen the following (anyone have any others?): RAGAIN RAGAN RAGIN RAYGAN RAYGAIN REAGAN REAGIN REGAN REGEN RIAGAN RIAGAIN RIGAN RIGGAN RIGGIN RIGGINS RAGON RIGGEN O'RAGAN O'RAGAIN O'REAGAN O'REGAN O'REGANE O'RIAGAN O'RIAGAIN O'RIEGAINE I thought what Fred Hagan said was funny (about one of his relatives changing the spelling of his name from RAGAN to REAGAN around the turn of the century because he did not want to be associated with a "Ragan down the street that was not of a good reputation"). I wonder if that was one of my elusive relatives ??? ;-) Of course, as we all know, the change most likely came from census takers (or others) interviewing people who were not educated and didn't know the right way to spell their own names. Well my Jury Duty is finished! Finally! We found the defendant 'not guilty' today. I felt good about that. The other side just didn't have enough evidence to convince us he was guilty. So tomorrow it's back to work. Good Night Y'all! Michael W.
