Sincerely, Nathan Mallard Nathan, Glad to hear from you. Welcome to our group! Our email discussion group has been in operation for a little over two years now and when I last checked we had around 280 members. We would be *very* happy to receive your contributions. In fact we would love to hear from you! Sometimes when someone submits their information we discover another family link (to another member of our group) in their lineage. You just may discover some new cousins that you didn't know existed. In order to send any messages to the group you'll need to turn off the 'rich-text' or 'html' formating in your email software. That format seems to cause problems with the ROOTS-WEB server. So because of that they won't let these types of messages go through. They also cannot accept attached files. I'm not familiar with PC's (which I assume you have) so I'm afraid I can't tell you how it's done. I'll send a 'cc' (carbon copy) of this msg to the group. Perhaps one of our cousins can offer some suggestions. Can someone help our new cousin? Please send the answer directly to Nathan at: [email protected] Also, I seem to have become the collection point for all the RAGAIN/RAGAN/RAGON/REAGAN/REGAN (...etc.) family lineages. I maintain the *main* RAGAN-ROOTS database. If you choose to submit your lineage to the database please understand that this information is freely shared with any researcher. You also will find it posted on the Internet. I will be glad to add your contact info (email, snailmail adress and phone number-if you wish) to the lineage so other researchers can get in touch with you if need be. If you would like to submit your lineage you can send it to the group via text files (in an email msg) or to me directly the same way or as an attached file. My prefered way is to get the information is in GedCom format (which most all genealogy software can export). GedComs can be sent inside of an email msg (if small enough) or as an attached file if larger. By submitting a GedCom your info will get into the database much quicker since it saves me a *lot* of typing. Good Luck hunting your ancestors and new cousins! Michael W. Said James Ragan >ws in NY 1818 and they ended up in LA? Yes I did get it. I remember because my g-gransfather was named William Henry RAGAN (ca1872-1934). Haven't been able to do anything with the database lately because of a major hard drive crash. I did manage to make several backups onto Zip disks the day before it crashed though. So I didn't lose much (just a few names on the maternal side of my family). I got a new iMac Tuesday, but it won't interface with my existing (other old) hard drive or Zip drive. I should have a new Zip drive next week. Then I'll put the database on the new computer. Should have everything back to normal by the middle of next week. Later Cuz! Hang in there ;-) Michael W. Yes, the complete story of Reason Ragan's family tragedy if on page 245 of Donald B. Reagan's Book. It starts "The family tragedy of Reason Ragan's life is the saddest, most tragic story in our family history. He was the 3rd son of Timothy and Elizabeth Trigg Ragan, b. 1783...." and the story goes on. The book can be purchased from Donald at 801 Henrietta Drive, Knoxville, Tenn. 37912 phone 615/689-4438. I keep telling people about this book because it is a masterpiece for anyone descended from the Reagans of Sevier Co., Tennessee. Hello Cousins! This family comes via GedCom from our cousin Alice McBride ([email protected]). It's just been imported into our database. What you have here is a descendant report. One thing that interests me is the fact that there's a John Black REAGAN in the lineage (person 1.3 --> 3rd child of William REAGAN). It seems that our database already has several John Black REAGANs in it. Plus a couple John B. REAGANs. So I know some of you are already researching him (them?). None of them seem to match this one though. Can anyone help us to make a link?? Michael ====================== Bother me tomorrow; Today I find no sorrow. ..... So I am a happy girl! > > Thank you so much. > > Cheryl Fry Cheryl, Thanks for your input. You're more than welcome for the time I've spent with RAGAN-ROOTS. It's something I have enjoyed doing over the past few years. I feel like I'm doing something very important to help preserve our heritage. I should caution you that our database and/or discussion group should be used only as a lead. There's nothing here that could be considered a 'Proof'. PLEASE remember that. And I appreciate your support of Roots Web. They've done an awful lot for the world of genealogy and certainly deserve all the support we can give them. Dr. Brian Leverich and his wife Karen have spent a *lot* of their own money (not to mention their time) to keep Roots-Web up and running. I'm also glad to hear you were able to make use of the RAGAN-ROOTS archive that Roots-Web maintains. For those of you that didn't know, you can find an archive of all our past discussions at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl. Once you reach this page just type in: ragan-roots. This will take you to a search page where you can type in any word or phrase you wish to look for in the archive. Try it I think you'll be surprised with what's there. I also understand your comment about looking through our 20,000+ name database (which is now over 30,000 names). It does require a computer with quite a bit of memory AND hard drive space to handle it. First you'll need to download the GedCom from our cousin Bill REAGAN's web site (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billreagan/). Then you'll need to decompress it. Then you'll need some genealogy software with the ability to import a GedCom. In case the archive (mentioned above) doesn't give you enough to look over I'll paste (below) some other RAGAN/REAGAN/RAGON (...etc.) Web pages for you to check out. I've had a busy day today and I'm ready to hit the sack. But before I do I feel like I should say 'Thank You' to all of our cousins that have submitted your own lineage to our database. It would be nothing without your help. So just KEEP 'EM COMING Y'all! Good Night Cousins! Michael W. I have recently found I derive from two sets of Ragan's. My sister says that would explain my brother's behavior! My father's parents were both Ragan. His mother was Gila Beatrice Ragan, who was born out of wedlock to Almira Elizabeth Ragan of Houston County, TN(Yellow Creek area). Almira's parents were John C. Ragan and Emily Halliburton. His father was Horace Clark Ragan, son of William Monroe Ragan and Maude Blocker of Dickson County(Slayden), TN. Now my curiosity is up and am wondering are these two families related! I have traced John C. Ragan(b. 8-15-1834) back to his parents who are Jesse Crowder Ragan and Nancy Green Mitchell. Emily Halliburton's parents are Charles Halliburton, Jr.( b. 3-17-1795 in Pearson Cty, NC) and Lucinda Cooksey(b. after 1843). They were married 2-28-1831. Here's something interesting I found also. After Jesse Crowder Ragan died, Nancy married Charles Halliburton(Emily's father) on 3-11-1846. So from the time John C. was 12 and Emily was 9, they lived in the same household. Below are John C. Ragan and Emily Halliburton's children: Mary Jane b. 11-3-1858 d. 1-2-1949 Susanna b. 3-28-1860 Cora b. 12-21-1861 d. June 1863 John Morgan b. 5-18-1863 md. Salley Hassell Della Frances b. 3-28-1865 md Joel Nelson Boaz Nelie Ann b. 6-1-1867 md. Andrew Bledsoe Martha Alice b. 2-14-1869 Almira Elizabeth b. 3-11-1871 md. James Lewis Sarah(Sallie) Laura b. 8-11-1873 Nora b. 12-1876 d. 8-1883 Tommie Burton(female) b. 4-25-1880 d. 2-1914 If anyone has information on either of these two families, please let me know. Since discovering the above, I've asked some older relatives who say the two Ragan's are not related. Maybe they don't know or they won't say! But I'd like to know. I thank you now for any help you can provide me. Rachel

Alice, I have and use FTM software but I would prefer getting your lineage in GedCom format. That way I can import it directly into the main RAGAN-ROOTS database, which is Reunion v. 6. I prefer this genealogy software to FTM. About the only thing I use FTM for is looking over their CD-ROMs to see what others have submitted. FTM has the ability to import/export a GedCom so you can share with others. Thanks for offering to share your family with us. Maybe someday we'll be able to tie all these families together. I'll be looking forward to seeing your lineage. Thanks again Michael W. I am new to the Ragan list. I am searching for information on my great great grandfather's parents. His name was James Oscar Ragan b. May 17, 1865, in GA d. Feb. 11 1898 Cairo, GA, he is buried in the Wilder Cemetery in Grady Co. along with 3 of his infant children. He married Bettie O. NeSmith of Mitchell Co., GA. I believe his parents may have been Joseph D. Ragan and Melvina Keaton married 29 May 1864 in Decatur, GA. Does this family appear in your Ragan data base or does anyone have the census of 1870 or 1880 for Mitchell, Grady or Decatur Counties in GA? I am hoping to find James O. Ragan as a child in their household. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide. Lori Ragan Charles

Alice, I checked our database but couldn't find any match for your John Black REAGAN. There are a couple John Black and John B. REAGANs but none seem to be yours. If you would like to submit your known lineage I would be glad to put it in the database and include your name, phone number, address & email address (whatever you desire) in case someone in the future is researching this lineage. The following is a will abstract for Somerset Co., MD (unfortunately, I forgot to copy the name of the book, but I think it was just called Will Abstracts of Worcester and Somerset Co., MD. The first one is for John Riggen, Somerset Co., 2 Nov 1773, 22 May, 1776 To wife: Jemimah Riggen, Excx., during life, dwelling plantation To son: Obediah Riggen, now dwelling plantation, orchards and land belonging also 25 acres of Marsh lying in Joans Island Marshes, 100 acres Goolden Lion, also hand mill and chest at death or marriage of wife Jemimah, if son Obediah Riggen die and leaves no heirs above lands and marshes to son John Riggen, also personality to both, Obediah to have one negro. To dau: Roday Riggen, negress and feather bed and furniture after death of wife. To grandson: Ruben Riggen, 10/. To granddau: Elizabeth Riggen, 10/. To grandson Jesse Riggen, 10/. Inv. * Accts. * The following was found in the Coventry Parish Records: Shadrak Riggen and Comfort Cameron were m. 18 Sept 1764. Children listed were: Rueben, b. 20 Sep 1765 Elisabeth, b. 5 Aug 1767 Jesse, b. 25 May 1769 Rachel, b. 13 Mar 1771 I was sent the following on Aug 11, 1997 by someone who did a lookup for me: Will of John McCREADY, Somerset Liber WK, folio 127, written 9 Jun 1779, probated 12 Jul 1779, included the folowing item: to nephews and nieces - Rubin Riggin, Jesse Riggin, Elizabeth Riggin, Rachel Riggen children of Shadrack Riggin dec'd, legacy left by my dec'd wife by her father John Riggin. I take it this most likely meant that McCready married Shadrack Riggin's sister (which looks to be the Sarah McCrady mentioned in John Riggin's will) On Aug 22, 1997, I was sent the following as the result of a lookup: Dryden's Worcester Co. Land Records: p. 138: Conveniency, 19 Dec 1798, Jesse Riggin and wife Sarah sold 28 acres willed by Hugh Stephenson to daughter Sarah p. 285: Hard Labour, 13 Jan 1807, Jesse Riggin and wife Sarah sold 100 acres, originally purchased 10 Dec 1798 p. 387: Mardike, 19 Dec 1798, John Ayres sold 19 1/2 acres to Jess Riggin p. 518: Reserve, 21 Feb 1806, Josiah Davis and wife sold 37 acres to Jesse Riggin of which he sold with wife Sally 20 3/4 acres on 3 Mar 1809 p. 558: Selbys Outlet: 19 May 1807, Joseph E. Also, a Jesse Riggin was witness to will of George Schoolfield, Wor. Co., Will, Liber JWB, p. 326, 19 Dec 1797, pr. 12 Jan 1798. Abstract of Jesse Riggen's will from Nicholas Co., KY is as follows: Jesse Riggen, date 2-27-1836 Children: Rachel Riggen Kiskadden Liddie Riggen Sally Riggen Jesse Riggen [Mary] Polly Riggen Selby Samuel Riggen executor: Thomas Maffit witnesses: Jno. Tracy, Thanks for telling us about the two RAGAN brothers. I don't know how long you've been a member of our RAGAN-ROOTS group, but that story has been mentioned several times before. Apparently many of our RAGAN-ROOTers have heard it. I'm convinced there *must* be something to it. Just how we could ever prove it is beyond me though. My father (Hubert Lasson RAGAN Jr.) told me the story when I was a kid. I believe he got it from his dad (H.L RAGAN Sr., 1897-1969) who I suppose got it from his father (William Henry RAGAN, 1871-1937). William Henry's father died when he was about 5 years old so, since he was so young, I assume he may have gotten it from some other relative. Sure wish I knew. One book I have (A Quaker Headmaster, The Life and Times of Chester L. REAGAN, by John H. HOBART, (c) 1980 - pg 13) claims that one of the brothers was named Thomas. Here's a quote from the book: One of the two original REAGAN brothers who had immigrated from Northern Ireland was named Thomas, and we know that he, with his wife Rachel, was among the Southern Quakers who emigrated to Ohio well before the close of the eighteenth century. We know also that they had a son named Reason and that Reason married a young Quakeress named Mary SPRAY. Reason and Mary had several children, one of whom, born in 1818, was named John. He also married a young Quakeress, Charity HAWKINS. John and Charity had seven children, the fifth one, Jehu, born near Wilmington, Ohio, in 1853, was Chester REAGAN's father. No source (proof) was given though. I do find it very interesting that the story seems to keep re-appearing. Oh well .... Later, Michael W.
