Nathan, I wouldn't worry about the exact spelling of the surname. Over the years I've found my ancestor's names spelled many different ways including RAGAN, RAGIN, REAGAN, and ROGAN. You can contact Donald at: [email protected] I think he still has copies of his book available. They were around $28-$30 I think. And you get a lot of RAGAN/REAGAN information for the price. As for another RAGAN page - you could check out the RAGAN Family Genealogy Forum at: http://www.genforum.com/ragan/ There have been quite a few people post inquiries there. I set that one up a couple years back. Later Y'all! Michael W. RAGAN ============== RAGAN-ROOTS List Moderator ============== Your profession is not what brings home your paycheck. Hello Cousins, Well I have another lineage for you. This is Francis B. RIGGAN Sr. & Mary PEGRAM. Unfortunately Im not able to tell you who sent it 8-(. It came to me from one of our cousins as a text le awhile back. If someone would like to claim it Ill be glad to enter your name as the submitter (or even as an interested researcher, if anyone else would like) into the notes section. As most of you know Ive had some computer problems the past couple months and managed to lose some of the les I had marked to enter into our database. But they seem to be gone forever now, sorry about that. Fortunately Im pretty faithful about making back-ups of the database when doing any work on it (thank goodness). I think the only entries I lost were a couple I had made the night before the crash on the maternal of my family. But, like I said, I did lose some les I had intended to enter. The next time you download the main GedCom from our cousin Bill REAGANs site you may want to look and see if any of your recent submissions are missing. (Wait until I upload the next GedCom though.) Let this be an important lesson to those of you who think My hard drive will never crash. Believe me *IT WILL SOONER OR LATER*!!! Its just a mechanical device and they WILL fail after enough wear & tear. True, I put quite a few miles on mine each year, so mine may tend to wear out a bit quicker than yours. The hard drive I lost was probably close to ten years old. It was an external Quantum 540 MB drive and served me well over the years. I used it with 3 or 4 different computers, as I went through differen upgrades. It was a good one, but its now gone for good now. Oh well, lets get on to a happier subject I just nished the entries for this RIGGAN lineage. Its been quite bit of work since it came to me as a text le. Once again Id like to mention; If you would like to have your lineage entered into our Main database please send it as a GedCom le. It will get entered much quicker than a text le. Plus its much easier for me to work with (saves a lot of wear & tear on my ngers ;-). Just send your lineages to me in a private email as an attached GedCom le. PLEEEEEZE. So I believe the new computer is now up and running full speed (333 Mz). It has a 56k modem, 24x CD-ROM and runs like a scalded cat. Its a new Blueberry iMac and man-o-man ... it smokes! Kinda like when I upgraded from 33Mz to 110 Mz a few years back. Its three times faster than the last one. And the RAGAN-ROOTS Database will be backed up this evening onto several Zip disks, my laptop and tomorrow morning it will be taken to the studio and placed on the old 33 Mz machine there. And the next time I get out to my dads Ill store it on his machine too. Did I mention that I make a lot of back-ups? 8-) Ill try to export another GedCom this week and send it to Bill REAGAN (get ready Bill ;-). The database now contains 32,004 people, of which I have 30637 marked for GedCom export. (Some wish to keep their privacy for the time being.) So heres the latest lineage in our database. Have fun kids! Best wishes, Michael W. Alicia Williams ps: I've always been told they lived in Wedowee, Randolph Co., AL, but came from Georgia "just across the line". --part1_d9061297.24875037_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: <[email protected]> Received: from rly-za03.mx.aol.com (rly-za03.mail.aol.com [172.31.36.99]) by air-za04.mail.aol.com (v59.24) with SMTP; Sun, 30 May 1999 15:29:29 -0400 Received: from bl-14.rootsweb.com (bl-14.rootsweb.com [204.212.38.30]) by rly-za03.mx.aol.com (8.8.8/8.8.5/AOL-4.0.0) with ESMTP id PAA08172; Sun, 30 May 1999 15:29:22 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from [email protected]) by bl-14.rootsweb.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id MAA08475; Sun, 30 May 1999 12:27:30 -0700 (PDT) Resent-Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 12:27:30 -0700 (PDT) From: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 15:25:49 EDT Subject: Fwd: [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Re: James Oscar Ragan Old-To: [email protected] Old-Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="part1_2e7c291f.2482eabd_boundary" X-Mailer: AOL 4.0 for Windows 95 sub 214 Resent-Message-ID: <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Resent-From: [email protected] X-Mailing-List: <[email protected]> archive/latest/1435 X-Loop: [email protected] Precedence: list Resent-Sender: [email protected] --part1_2e7c291f.2482eabd_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit --part1_2e7c291f.2482eabd_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-path: [email protected] From: [email protected] Full-name: LoriChar Message-ID: <[email protected]> Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 15:08:28 EDT Subject: Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Re: James Oscar Ragan To: [email protected] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 4.0 for Windows 95 sub 214 Thank you to all the Ragan rooters the data base and Michael for helping me to connect into a family that there is already some research on. Hello Cousins, Here's some information I thought some of you might be able to use. Michael W. RAGAN ============= RAGAN-ROOTS List Owner ============= GREAT! #8 --->Genealogy Research Easy Access Tip! This information is excerpted from How to Do Research on the Internet http://www.researchonline.net/res1.htm Permission is explicitly granted to repost this message to other maling lists. GATHERING THE GEDCOMS Gather ye GEDCOMs while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying, And this same flower that smiles to-day To-morrow will be dying. RobertHerrick (1591-1674) (paraphrased) There are about a dozen sites on the internet that are directories or collections of GEDCOM files. This GREAT tip gives an overview of what youll find and how to use them. GEDCOM files are basically text files of family records which contain tags that identify each field of the record and ties the family together. To effectively utilize GEDCOM files you will need a Genealogy Program such as Ultimate Family Tree. These programs allow you to organize your family history and print a variety of reports. They also allow you to import GEDCOMs from other researchers and combine their work with yours. Since these are all the results of others research, the quality will vary greatly from one to another, and you should confirm any information you find in GEDCOMs before trying to build on the data. There are a number of tools for viewing and manipulating GEDCOM files in the Genealogy Forum of AOL and on the internet at: http://ftp.cac.psu.edu/genealogy/ftp/gedcom/INDEX.html There are several libraries of GEDCOM files available on the internet. Additionally, the World Family Tree project sells a number of CD-ROMS of GEDCOM files. Basically, the GEDCOM collections on line, falls into two categories: (1) collections of actual GEDCOM files on line and (2) Published GEDCOMS files or sites which are not in the native GEDCOM format, but are the results of publishing various reports from GEDCOM files. Collectionsof GEDCOM files on line: GENSERV has a large collection of GEDCOM files available on line. This collection is maintained by Cliff Manis and is accessible at: http://www.genserv.com To participate in his program, Cliff requests that you provide a GEDCOM file of your own, then you may search his files of over 13 million names and retrieve the files of interest to you. Family Tree Maker has several hundred CD-ROMs of GEDCOM files which have been submitted by individuals. Their index may be searched at http://www.familytreemaker.com You may then purchase the CD-ROM with the families of interest to you. Prior to the popularization of the internet in 1996, there were large collections of GEDCOM files available on GEnie, Fidonet, and Delphi. I do not know the status of those files now. Compuserve also has a large collection of GEDCOM files. I do not know the extent of the files available, nor do I believe that they have been indexed. Compuserve members may retrieve the files from their archives. America On Line has a collection of approximately 3,600 GEDCOM files. These are available for download via AOL members. Some 2.4 million names are in the files. They have been partially indexed by Eastern Digital Resources as a part of The Genealogists Index to the World Wide Web. This index is available on CD-ROM for $12.00. Details are on line at: http://members.aol.com/genwebindx Genealogy.org has a collection of approximately 550 GEDCOM files which are accessible via the WWW or via FTP. These files and their index are maintained by Andrew J. Morris and the files are also indexed on the Genealogists Index to the World Wide Web mentioned above. Since many of the files are quite large, I recommend accessing the site via FTP. Instructions for access are on their web site: http://www.genealogy.org There is a collection of approximately 100 GEDCOM files located at: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/gedcom/ PublishedGEDCOMs on line. The largest initiative in this area to date is Gene Starks GENDEX. Gene maintains a site index to all of the individuals who have used his GED2HTML software to publish their family histories on line. The site index is located at: http://www.gendex.com Both of the two sites listed below now have an extensive collection of home pages created by individuals from their own personal GEDCOM files. Various formats and reports are represented. The GEDCOM file itself is not available, but you can contact the owner if you find something of interest. http://www.ancestry.com http://www.familytreemaker.com The following two sites do not have the full GEDCOM files accessible, but both contain extensive indexes to their family group sheets which are derived from GEDCOM files. These indexes are a great resource as they also contain dates, location and marriage information. Kindred Konnections http://www.kindredkonnections.com Yates Publishing http://www.sanbachs.com/cdi.html The Grandfather of all GEDCOM collections is the Ancestral File of the LDS church. It is now searchable at http://www.familysearch.org You can take a diskette to your local FHC library and retrieve the GEDCOM formatted records that are of interest. Linda, I have had trouble sending mail to you at the [email protected] address, that is why my last message came through Ragan-Roots, this one was sent back as well. Before I decide to buy the Ragan book, is there mention of a Joseph D. Ragan b. abt 1840 Alabama? I am not sure of when he migrated to SW Georgia, married Melvin Keaton in 1864 in Decatur County, GA, had at least 2 children Elizabeth b abt. 1864 and James Oscar born 1865. Appears on the 1870 Mitchell Co., GA census. Thank you for your help. Lori Ragan Charles
Jean, My James Oscar Ragan is not the child of G.W. Ragan. I believe if G. W. Ragan had a son named James Oscar Ragan, his dates of birth and death are incorrect as printed in the book, Ragan and Ragans. My James Oscar Ragan was born 05-17-1865 and died 02-11-1898. He is buried in Wilder cemetery on the border of Grady and Thomas County along with 3 of his infant children. His wife was Bettie O. NeSmith b. 1869 d. Linda, My James Oscar Ragan is the one on page 3 of the Ragan and Ragans Book. I did verify his parents just today through 1870 Mitchell Co. GA census. They were Joseph D. Ragan b. AL and Melvina Keaton b. GA. I am new to the list and not familiar with this book is it still in print and available for purchase? Does it say any more about him? Where might I obtain this book? Thank you for your assistance. Lori Ragan Charles
I am searching for information on my great great grandfather's parents. His name was James Oscar Ragan b. May 17, 1865, in GA d. Feb. 11 1898 Cairo, GA, he is buried in the Wilder Cemetery in Grady Co. along with 3 of his infant children. He married Bettie O. NeSmith of Mitchell Co., GA. I believe his parents may have been Joseph D. Ragan and Melvina Keaton married 29 May 1864 in Decatur, GA. Does this family appear in your Ragan data base or does anyone have the census of 1870 or 1880 for Mitchell, Grady, Thomas or Decatur Counties in GA? I am hoping to find James O. Ragan as a child in their household. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide. Lori Ragan Charles
