    1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] JOHN H. REAGAN
    2. Fred Hagan
    3. I am reading the book THE LONG SURRENDER by Burke Davis. It details the escape of Jefferson Davis and his cabinet after the Civil War. I was surprised to read that the Confederate Postmaster General was John H. Reagan. Out of curiosity, has anyone researched this Reagan line? Fred

    3. Fred, My sister La Faye Sutkin and I are gggrandaughters of John H. Reagan. He was born October 8, 1818 in Sevier County Tennessee in what is now downtown Gatlinburg TN. He was the son of Timothy Richard and Elizabeth Lusk a Reagan. Timothy Richard was the son of Richard and Julia Ann Schultz Reagan. Richard was the son of Timothy Ragan and Elizabeth Trigg Reagan. There are at least two very good books about John H. One is his autobiography, "Memories". The other is "Not Without Honor" by Ben Proctor. He was not only the Post Master General of the Confederacy, but he was a United States Congressman before and after the War and then he served in the U.S. Senate. He authored the Homestead Act and the Interstate Commerce Act. He resigned his seat in the senate to return to Texas at the request of Governor Hogg to help create and head the Texas Railroad Commission. He was the last surviving member of Jefferson's cabinet when he died March 5, 1905 in Palestine, Texas. -----Original Message----- From: Fred Hagan <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, July 25, 1999 6:04 PM Subject: [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] JOHN H. There's been quite a bit of research done on him. Over the years he had three wives and twelve children. He left us quite a few REAGAN descendants. John himself is probably a descendant of John RAGAN & Mary MORRICE. Here's 3 genereations of what we have in our database (beginning with John Henniger REAGAN's parents): ========= 1 Timothy Richard RAGAN —————————————————————————————— Birth: ca 1797, Sevier Co., TN Death: ca 1847, Fulton Co., AR Father: Richard RAGAN (ca1776-1829) Mother: Julia Ann SHULTZ (1775-1845) Notes Timothy Richard died while on his way to join his son in Texas. This Timothy Reagan and his wife, Elizabeth Lusk, were the parents of John H. Reagan of Texas and Civil War fame. John H. Reagan described his father as being very mechanically inclined and good at many trades - being a good blacksmith, boot and shoe maker, tanner, saddle maker, gunsmith, silversmith, very adept at woodworking, and able to repair most any kind of clock or watch. John H. also said, 'He was a man of exemplary piety and of benevolent disposition, and was a member of the Methodist church from his youth to the end of his life'. Probably because of his ability in these trades Timothy Richard moved from Gatlinburg to the Sevierville area where the demand for his services would be greater. Sometime after 1838 he moved to Knox County, Tennessee where he lived for a few years. Timothy with Elizabeth and their family appear in the 1830 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee. Also found in the Knox County 1840 Federal Census is a listing for him. Source: 'Smoky Mountain Clans', Donald B. Reagan, 1978, p 6a, 8. 'Smoky Mountain Clans, Volume 2', Donald B. Without a doubt, John H. Reagan is still Gatlinburg's most illustrious son. A brief summary of his accomplishments includes: surveyor of public lands in Texas; lawyer, admitted to the bar in 1846; state representative 1847-1849; district judge, 1852-1857; Representative to U. S. Congress, 1857-1861; delegate to Secession Convention of Texas in 1861; Postmaster General of Confederacy; acting Secretary of Confederacy. In 1875 he was a member of the State Constitutional Convention; U.S. Representative, 1875-1887; U. S. Senator from Texas, 1887-1891; a member of State Railroad Comission, served as chairman 1897-1903. John was imprisoned after the Civil War presumably for his high post in the Confederacy. John H. returned to his birth place only once, 22 August 1900, after sixty-three years absence. He and his wife received a heartwarming reception in Sevierville where he spoke at the Courthouse and received friends at a reception later. He spent two days visiting with his cousins in Gatlinburg. John H. Reagan reared his first wife's two sons. John H. Reagan died and was buried in East Hill Cemetery, Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. Source: 'Smoky Mountain Clans', Donald B. 2. Looking for links to RAGAN' s in DC in the 1800's. My grandfather was William M. RAGAN. He went by Maynard. He married Teresa SKELLY and they had two sons- William M.RAGAN, Jr went by Sonny and was born in Sept. 1921 in DC. His brother is Joseph Bernard RAGAN and he is several years younger. They grew up in DC and both married there before moving to MD and FL respectively but much later. William Maynard's father was Willaim A. RAGAN and he was married to Minnie FULLER. Besides Maynard they had 4 other sons-Ross, Roland, Addison, and Paul. Addison died young. I think either Ross or Roland was still living in the late 1960's. Maynard died in 1970 and is buried in the Veterans' Cemetery in Crownsville, MD. Forgive me if I have sent this before. I don't think I have but I've lost track of where I have posted. Presumably, he dropped the "e" from our name to indicate he was no longer Catholic. Spouse: Ivandora COOK Birth: 14 Jul 1912, Mountain Park, Oklahoma Father: George Franklin COOK (1889-1957) Mother: Cora Lee MEEK (1893-) "I weighed about 8 pounds at birth and it was a difficult birth for my mother. I was born at home in Mt. Park. I was the oldest child, although my parents had had a boy about a year earlier but he died shortly after birth. I was named after my mother's good friend Ivan and her aunt Dora MEEK. In 1919, we moved from Moutain Park to Arcadia, Texas, just 20 miles from Galveston. My grandfather, John Henry COOK, bought a dairy farm and my parents were going to help him run it. But it flooded all the time so they left Texas and moved to Cauthron, Arkansas, in 1920 to run a goat farm they had purchased. In Texas the school was right across the street from my house. I didn't like it because they found out I wasn't really reading but just mermorizing. In Arkansas, I remember walking through the woods to my grandparent's house. I was very scared. We had a collie dog that when with us to protect us. There were lots of Indians around because we lived near a reservation. Juana Parker was a good friend of my father's. Someone tells the story that Juana Parker tried to trade Gandpa COOK a horse for a kid. Juana Parker also told my father, "your squaw is afraid of me. I would never hurt your squaw." We grew our own food and chickens. I never had a room of my own; I always shared with Elvis. We had very little money. There were no toys. I didn't even have a doll, although I wanted one so much. I didn't have a bicycle but I did have a tricycle. At Christmas we usually got candy or an orange. We also got books. I loved to read. We also played games like Rook and Dominoes. I had a pogo stick, jumpropes, a baseball. We all had jobs to do. The schools in Arkansas were not very good and I was really behind when we moved to California. I was supposed to know how to add columns of figures but I couldn't do it. When my father got sick in Cauthron, he moved to Arizona to get well. After a few months he got a job with the gas company in California and Mom and I and Denver and Elvis moved to California. We took the train from Arkansas to Oklahoma to seek the Meeks and then we took the train to California. My mother got sick on the train and I had to take care of Elvis and Denver. I was only 9 years old. When we moved to California I went to Montevista Elementary School and Franklin High School. I liked history and English best. In high school, my uncle Ural was supposed to take me to school but he was always late and I didn't like being late. That's when my mother and I connived to get me to drive. My father didn't think girls should drive. When I asked him if I could drive he said, yes, when I learned to drive I could get my license. I knew, though, he would never teach me. So, since he only drove to work three days a week, on the other days my mother and I pushed the Model T out of the garage and I practiced driving. Then one day I reminded him that he had told me that I could get my license when I learned to drive. So, I showed him I could drive. The only thing he said was, "I'll be damned." After I got my license he was very supportive and let me drive all the time. My COOK grandparents owned a store in Herman near Los Angeles. My job was to take them on drives over the week-end. My grandfather liked to go to through the Imperial Valley and stop at all the little towns. Then in Calexico, he's leave his wife, Dolly, in a motel and I'd drive him across the border so he could have a beer. It was during prohibition and my grandfather liked his beer. While I was in school I worked at the May Co. and the 10 cent store. When I graduated I took a course in dress design but I was never that good. I got a job at the Broadway working in hosiery and accessories. I also worked in ready-to-wear but I didn't like it that much. I lived at home until I got married. I took the streetcar to work. I met Dad at the Garvanza Congregational Church. I thought he was kind of a nuisance; he was always doing crazy things. I had a boyfriend named Charles. He was in the navy and drove a real nice roadster. My parents didn't like him at all. He always took me to real nice places. While I was dating Charles I got Dad some dates with some of my friends and we double dated. When I was 23 I went skating with a date. Dad and Harold were there and they kept tripping me. I finally started going out with Dad. We went together for two years and then one night we were talking and he said, "Let's go get a ring." We were engaged for six months. We were both active in the church choir. We were married in the church. Denver was the best man and Elvis was my maid-of-honor. Virginia Stanton was also a bridesmaid. My ex-boyfriend was an usher and he drove me home after the rehearsal dinner. The choir sang the wedding march when we walked down the aisle. They also sang "Oh Sweet Mystery of Life." We had the reception at home with ice cream and cake. We took the train to San Diego for a one-day honeymood. We had a sleeping car on the train and arrived in San Diego in the morning. We had breakfast and walked to the fairgrounds where the World's Fair was. Then we took the train back and the streetcar home. We didn't have a car. When we got home Donna Halsted's brother was at our house and he stayed until midnight. We were so tired. After I got married the Broadway told me I couldn't work because my husband was working. It was the Depression and the jobs were saved for the men. However, after about a month I went to the store and got my job back. I lost all my seniority though. One day they called me to the head office and asked me if I could get along with this guy Harry Casey who was the accessories buyer. I said I could so they promoted me to head of stock. I was making $18 per week. It was 1936. They had a big party for me with drinks. I had never had a drink before and I didn't have one then. A month later I found out I was pregnant. It wasn't planned. The store was really mad. Floyd didn't exactly jump for joy either. I think he liked the extra money and we needed it. We had just bought a 1934 Pontiac with a rumble seat. My Dad had bought it for us and we were paying him back. A year after we were married we went with a few other couples to the World's Fair. The guys wanted to see 'Little Igi'. You could see her dance for a dime but for a quarter you could see a lot. The women told the guys that if they didn't spend the quarter that the women would put on a show for them. They bought it but the women never produced. Dad was working at the Bank of California as a teller. The first things we bought were a car and a refrigerator. On the 3-day week-ends we would take off for Las Vegas and San Francisco. We went to Hoover Dam. After Jim was born we wanted a house. I went to work for Pacific States Rubber Company printing balloons. My mother kept Jim from Sunday night through Friday. We saved enough money for a down payment on a house in Temple City on Olema Street. We paid $4200 in 1941. We lived in an area where there were lots of older people so even though Dad was over 30 years, he was called up for the Army in 1945. I stayed in the house for awhile and worked nights but finally we sold the house and I lived with my parents in the Sultana house. Elvis lived there too. In 1946 I went to Oklahoma to be near your Dad. We lived in a trailer near Fort Ord. I got sick and my friend, Ruth Carter (Sherre's godmother) , contacted our State Representative and asked that Dad be discharged. He was. We returned to California in 1947 and Dad became assistant manager of the Bank of California in Alhambra. We lived with my parents for a few months and then rented a house on Cloverly in Temple City. In 1950 we built the house on Londgon. 1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Re: John Nathan REAGAN
    2. Carol, Your John Nathan is in our database. Here's an email I rcvd a little over a year ago: =============== This lineage came from: [email protected] Hi there, Your e-mail was given me by Ron Grassi on the internet. I am a stray Reagan who can't find a home. Ha =========== Hi Michael, Have been enjoying your mail since I turned my name in for your list. I am searching John Nathan Reagan and told you I would send a few things I have on him. He is the one I told you started a small resort comunity called Reagan Wells in Central Texas, Uvalde Co. He was born Oct. 20, 1852 (Texas, I think) and died Sept 2, 1916 in Uvalde, Tx. Was married to Mary Ann Payne (Molly} born Jan 1, 1860 in either Mo. or Tx. Her parents were Barney and Rachel Payne. Barney was born March 3, 1828, died April 7, 1910 , Rachel born Feb 12, 1838, died May 21, 1918, all except John Nathan are buried in Barksdale, Tx. cemetary, John Nathan in Uvalde, Tx. The children born to John N. and Mary Ann are: James Monroe Reagan, born Sept. 23, 1878 Willie David Reagan born Nov 16, 1879 Laura May Reagan, June 17, 1882 Barney Elven Reagan, June 30, 1884 Frank Thomas Reagan, Jan 26, 1886 Rachel Emily Reagan, Sept. 23, 1887 Altie Etter Reagan, April 20, 1889 Marce Silus Lessie Reagan, May 11, 1891 Joe Calvin Reagan, Sept 15, 1894 Millie Maud Reagan, April 1, 1896 Some interesting tid-bits about this family can be found on the following internet address. A letter from Laura (Reagan) Satathite, oldest daughter of John N. about the country as it was being settled around 1880. This is in a book by Allan Stovall called "Nueces Headwater Country" published around 1958 by Naylor. The Barksdale cemetary markings have a number of Reagans and an old picture of the Reagan Wells hotel is also found there, together with the newspaper advertising, (Talk about 'snake oil' advertising, it's funny to read.) The letter by Ross Cromeans about world war 1 is also interesting. He is a brother in law to Barney Elvin (Bud) Reagan. The internet address is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txedward/barksdale.htm Hope you will find this of some interest as I keep (slowly) working on this family. 2. Sheila Mcmahon
    3. Hi, Years ago I corresponded with a Pat DeWitt, a Reagan descendant who lived in Arizona. I would very much like to contact her again--I think her letters were in the file that hurricane Andrew claimed. I'd like to correspond with anyony who is interested in the family of Reagans she was researching at that time. If anyone can help me with this, I'll be grateful. Thanks, Doris Peirce <[email protected]>

    1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Anyone got Connecticutt Regan/Ragan/Reagan ?????????
    2. Hi fellow researchers... I am still stuck and still havent see any connection on this mailing list after one year. :( Can anyone come forward with family in CT about 1850ish onward?????? I have a Mary REGAN born abt 1842 Ireland and died after 1920 Stamford. She married to Francis Thomas SCULLY before abt 1867, probably in Stamford or at least in Fairfield County or somewhere else, CT. They had four known children, the oldest being my great grandpa Benard Thomas Scully, born in 1869 in Stamford. Mary's surname could have been mispelled...maybe Reagan? I found a Benard Regan that died in Stamford 27 April 1879 and he appeared to be old enough (born abt 1804) to be Mary's father because her son have the same name but I cant find him in 1870 or earlier census. I am pretty sure Mary didnt come over alone from Ireland at abt age 12. Second question is if Irish people come to USA and settled in CT, which port is most likely that they have entered? New York City or Boston? Many thanks! Lori in AZ

I did not realize this until I started typing. I don't know how to cut/paste an e-mail to make everything read correctly, so you need to read this first. Ada Tempie Ragan b. 8/7/1870, Calhoun City, GA daughter Eunie Mabel Ragan As far as I know Hamilton Augustus Ragan and Jenette Coleman Ragan were not related." My mother was Mildred Christine Reagan. Her records indicate (for my line anyway) the name was changed from RAGAN to REAGAN between 1909-1913. Fred --------------5A58C751BADC2962AE6F7033--

    1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Trip Info
    2. Hello RAGAN-Rooters! Well it looks like I owe you an apology again. I meant to send a private email to my daughter tonight but I seem to have grabbed the wrong address and drug it into the "to" box. I meant to send it to my immediate family. Sorry. well if you read the other note you know that we're on our way back home and spending tonight near Roanoke, VA. The trip has been very nice. We met a lot of new cousins. No they weren't "RAGANs", but they are descendants of Nerissa RAGAN, a sister to my g-grandfather William Henry RAGAN. The reunion was a lot of fun. I ate too much, which is normal. Made quite a few photos. We stayed in the beautiful home (4500 sq ft) of my cousin Edna in PA. (The reunion was held in NY.) Edna showed me some proofs that should qualify me to become a member of "The Sons of the American Revolution". I really like that. Unfortunately the soldier wasn't a "RAGAN" (there were quite a few RAGAN/REAGAN soldiers in the revolution and I had hoped I could link to one of them since that's my surname). He was Samuel LEEPER, grandfather of my 3g-grandmother, Mary LEEPER. (Mary married William RAGAN.) Samuel LEEPER was an officer, so there's quite a bit of info on him. There was another officer in my line too (James CLARK who married into the LEEPER family), but he was another generation back so I'll concentrate on Samuel. So now I'll need to get an application for the SAR. I'm pretty excited about that. As we traveled around meeting new people this weekend I noticed Edna wearing her DAR sweatshirt. I thought that was cool ;-) She gave me extra copies of the proofs I'll need so I'll get to work on that project ASAP. We had a great time and saw some *beautiful* country. The mountains in Virginia and Pennsylvania were/are fantastic! I had no idea Pennsylvania was so mountainous. The northern part of the state really impressed us. Edna lives right in the moutains. We should be back home tomorrow and back to work on Tuesday. I need to get some sleep now so g'night y'all! 3. To Barbara "okay help me out", who doesn't know what to do next. There should be some kind of a library near you, where you can look at (or order in) census films. Figure out when and where the family was at the time of the 1900, 1910, or 1920 census, and try to find them there. The census will tell where the parents were born, what the father's trade or profession was, etc. You can learn a great deal from census'. Also, city directories are helpful, and county land records. Hope this helps.
