I am new to the RAGAN list and hope that some of you can help me break down this "brick wall". I am seeking information about the family of my great, great, great grandmother Ann RAGAN (possibly Nancy Ann). She was the daughter of Nathan RAGAN (b. Aug 20, 1788) and Elizabeth (Unknown last name). She married William BARNHILL (1801-1844) on Aug 24, 1821 in Hickman County, TN. For this reason we had concentrated our search in Hickman County. Today I learned of a case in the Chancery Court of Dickson County, TN on October 20, 1846 which involved the will of Nathan RAGAN so I have altered the focus of my search. The will involved property on the East Side of Yellow Creek. The children of William BARNHILL and Ann RAGAN ended up in Hardin County, TN. We have been unable to locate the burial place of William and Ann but do know that the orphan children of William BARNHILL were mentioned in 1844 in the minutes of the Hardin County Court Clerk. Your Phillip Reagan is buried in the church cemetery at Reaganstown, Pa. He was originally buried in a family cemetery a short distance away along with his wife. The remains of both were dug up at a later date (forget when right now) and moved to the church cemetery. They're buried to the right of the church. A beautiful memorial marker is down behind the church. I had photos of the tombstones & the memorial marker taken several yrs ago. When I determined your Phillip REAGAN can't be connected to the Ga. Phillip Ragan that I'm researching, I sent the photos on to another list member that was his descendant. The info about his burial & re-burial was told by a descendant I visited with plus it's also noted in Della Reagan Fischer's book. The person that decided to have them moved made a good decision. The REAGAN Family Cemetery is now gone and oral history states other REAGAN family members were still there but as the land changed hands over the yrs, the owners kept plowing closer & closer. The tombstones were damaged and eventually destroyed by the forces of man and nature so it's nonexistent now. Jean in Pa. He was the son of the Rev. Galen G. Ragan and Susannah Godbey. John married Nancy Coffey on July 14, 1878 in Highland County, Ky. Nancy was born on October 2, 1857 in Stanford, Lincoln County, Ky., and died on October 10, 1928 in Wheelersburg, Ohio. John and Nancy had the following 7 children: 1. Oliver G. The last name listed in your email to Ragan-Roots-L, a copy of which was received by me on Sep 1, 1999 is Benjamin Franklin Ragan, b.10Aug1860. My grandfather's name was John Benjamin Franklin Ragan. , and served in the Civil War in a regiment from Georgia. However, he was born in 1840 or 1846. I know it was not unusual in the 1800s for people to have three given names, two of which were to pay respect to some famous person of the past. However, this similarity of names, even if not of birth dates, may deserve a little checking. You will note I am sending a copy of this letter to "Calouri." Ragan Rooters, I saw Judy Swan's name mentioned just a moment ago in the forum. I too would like to thank Judy for her dedication and efforts. She has helped me find a spot amoung other Ragan in this ever growing tree. At least what we can see of it. I will forever be gratefull! :) >From resent research she and I have been able to state that with reasonable certainty that my Dixon Ragan aka SD Ragan and her Solomon Ragan b 1849 in TN are one and the same. I have found word of mouth/written records from decendants of Dixon's lines and William E. Ragans lines stating that a Dixon did live in Mo. and Izard Co Arkansas. Many of the Ragan's decendants still live there in Izard, Co arkansas, as well as my Roberts and White lines. My SD married Sallie Roberts 1873 in Izard Co. Arkansas as well as them having William Joseph Ragan in 2Apr1874 there (my grandfather). Judy has records of Solomon. I have Records of SD Ragan and Dixon Ragan born about the same year. But as to yet we have not come up with any one document that concusivly puts Solomon Dixon Ragan on the same sheet of paper. I am still attempting to do this by requesting official vital records from family his wife and decendants. This connection would put me in the tree with Joseph Wesley Ragan b1806 in NC m. The back-up for our RAGAN-ROOTS database can be found at our cousin Bill REAGAN's site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billreagan/ The file is called RAGAN.Zip. After downloading you'll need to decompress it using PKZip/UnZip (for PCs) or something like ZipIt (for Macs). You'll then have the GedCom, which can be imported into your genealogy software. The last version of the database was uploaded back in June. It has about 30.5k people in it. Since that time we've added another couple thousand or so people (32,617 actually). If you wanted to hold off for awhile I should be exporting another GedCom soon. Bill hasn't been feeling too well lately so I didn't want to impose on him. He has been very gracious to offer his site as a place for our cousins to download our GedCom and access our shared information. And we should all thank him for that. Thanks Bill! And speaking of shared information ... If you'd like to have your family listed in our database please send it to me directly at: [email protected] And in order to get it into the database as quickly as possible I'll need to have it in GedCom format. That way it will be imported directly. In other words it will save me a *lot* of typing and time.
