    1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Re: James Jones Joseph REAGIN
    2. Douglas, Glancing through our database I don't find your name listed. Did you submit your lineage? Or would you rather not include any living members? If you'd like I could make sure that any living members are not checked. That way whenever I export a GedCom they would not be included or uploaded to the Internet for others to see. Some of our other cousins have done that. That's why the database has 34,362 people, but when a GedCom is exported it will only include 33,436 (at this point in time). It's not something I do in every case, only when requested. The databas edoesn't seem to have any James Jones Joseph REAGINs. I did find a lineage which was entered in July of 1997 and updated in April of 1998 which has two James Jones REAGINs (one a junior - wife Lydia Ann Narcissus NEW). And one of their descendants is a John B. Gordon REAGIN (1905-1981), I have no wife listed for him though. I only show him with a son named John Travis. 1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Re: Thanksgiving 1999
    2. LaFaye, Thank you so much. I appreciate you and all our other RAGAN-ROOTers too. We did have a pretty good day, in spite of dad being in the hospital. Today I was able to have Thanksgiving dinner with all my kids and their families. And my dad's wife June who is a *very* important part of our family too. And I was also able to spend some time this week with one of my brothers (Kimbal Hugh RAGAN) and my sister (Nikola Lynn RAGAN/McKAMIE). They came in for the holiday too. Kim had planned to come before dad got sick. Niki made a special trip because of dad. After dinner today us kids and my wife Terry made a trip to Chattanooga and saw dad. He seems to be doing much better today. He was very alert and in good spirits. We were very thankful for that. He's a good 'ol boy (as they would say around here) and we love him very much. I appreciate everyone for keeping him in your prayers. Thank you RAGAN-ROOTers! Later Y'all, Michael W. 3. I received this notice last Monday from Peggy Walker. Hi McDowell Publishers just called and they have reprinted the Massac, Johnson, Pope & Hardin County Biographical Review Book in Hard Back. The price is $70, but they have it on sale for $35.00 plus 3.50 for shipping. It is McDowell Publications, 11129 Pleasant Ridge Road, Utica, Ky 42376. Peggy Judy Foreman Lee [email protected] ================= I can personally testify that this biography book is a real treasure! It was first printed in 1893. I've seen only two copies, one I found in a library in Metropolis, IL and the other is owned by my 3rd cousin Danny in Harrisburg, IL. It has *lots* of family information in it. If your family was from that area I can assure you that this would be a great buy. (I've already ordered my copy ;-) Michael W. RAGAN =============== RAGAN-ROOTS List Moderator ===============

    1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Thanksgiving 1999
    2. Thursday 25 Nov 1999 10:45 am Hello Ragan-Rooters! Today I'd like to say thanks to all of you who have taken part in this discussion group, and to everyone who has contributed to our tremendous database. It now contains information on over 34,000 people! (Wow) Checking our subscriber list this morning I see that we now have 298 cousins in our group. We may hit the 300 mark before long. When I started this discussion list back in the Spring of 1997 I had no idea we would ever reach this point. Through the contributions of many of our different cousins we've been able to make new connections for a lot of you. If you haven't found your long lost link yet, by all means do NOT give up. Stick with us and keep posting your "Brick Walls". Perhaps sooner or later you'll discover some new relatives among us. Today I hope each and everyone of you has a very nice Thanksgiving. I hope you'll get to share company with a lot of other family members. And I feel i should mention (since I'm a photographer by profession) be sure to take a camera with you to the dinner. Be sure to photograph your family/families. One photo of all family members in a large group would be nice as well as smaller family groups and/or individuals. I can "GUARANTEE" that as the years pass, those photos will become more and more precious to you. On a sadder note I need to mention that my father has been sick now for awhile. He was hospitalized a week ago for some tests, but he kept getting worse as time past. Finally last Saturday we had him transfered to Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. Now he seems to be doing a little better, but they're still doing tests trying to find out what's wrong with him. We've been pretty worried about him. And I would certainly appreciate you keeping him in your prayers. Well I'd better go. Y'all have a Happy Turkey Day! Michael W. 3. Don't know what brought this up, but we bought Family Origins way back there and have been most pleased with it. You can make a number of various reports, etc. In your case, if your files can be reduced to a GED file, you can import it intact into Family Origins. Note...Broderbund now owns Parsons, which originally marketed Family Origins. So they would have to be compatible. 2. Transfering Genealogical information via GedComs should work across platforms (PC->Mac, Mac->PC) and from one software type to another. As I understand it, in some cases there may be some info lost, but not much. Perhaps some notes may get lost in the transfer. I use a Mac with Reunion software and have been *very* pleased with both. I bought FTM (v 1.0) several years ago, but never really liked it. The only reason I keep it is for access to their CD-ROM info. Michael W. 2. Heartsill, You're certainly welcome. This is something I *really* enjoy doing. I started the RAGAN-ROOTS discussion group back in the Spring of1997, If you'd like you can search the RAGAN-ROOTS archives at the following URL: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Once you get there type in: ragan-roots Then you can search for what you wish - RAGON, RAGAN, REGAN, REAGAN, Heartsill, Eli RAGON, John RAGAN, William REAGAN, Ronald REAGAN ... whatever. As you look through this report, if you wish, you can add any missing information. Info like specific dates (day, month, year). I'd also like to have any marriage dates & places, as well as places for birth, death, burial ...etc. All this info may prove very useful to some future genealogist. That's why we share this data, to help preserve our family history. Also please be aware that I make this info freely available to other RAGON researchers. Several times each year I export something called a GedCom file (Genealogical Data Communication) from our database and upload it to the Genealogy Forum on AOL and the Internet for other researchers to use free of charge. A GedCom can be used by anyone with genealogy software. It works across platforms (ie ..Mac->PC, PC->Mac). The latest version of our GedCom (a couple months old now) can be found at our cousin Bill REAGAN's site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billreagan/ The current 'Master' RAGAN-ROOTS database holds info on over 34,000 people! The database contains several Presidents (REAGAN-of course, Geo. BUSH, Thomas JEFFERSON), Stonewall JACKSON, Robert E. LEE, Kings of England, Scotland, as well as a neighbor to Frank & Jesse James (Joseph or John RAGAN). And now it has some accurate info on your family as well. Of course not all these people are directly related to RAGAN families, some may only be distantly related by marriage. According to our database your family has been traced back to Eli RAGON & Mary STEWART who lived in Ash Co., NC. They moved to eastern TN. then to Arkansas. My grandmother was Edna Ragan Grant and her Great Grandfather was Henry Harrison RAGAN and then his son Daniel Ragan was her grandfather and his son John Ragan was her father. I have never been able to figure out who Henry's parents were but now with more information maybe I can come up with some new places to look. Would love to hear from you. Susan Steveson Missouri

    3. I just found a note in my mother's bible regarding Nancy McDonald Ragan which is as follows: "Nancy McDonald was born on September 14, 1820 in Illinois, in what, in an early day was called the American Bottom, not far from St. Louis. Her parents moved to Morgan County before she was old enough to remember. In this place, about 3 miles northeast of Jacksonville, she grew to womanhood. She was married in 1847 on February 16 to Henry Harrison Ragan in Jacksonville, in the home of his sister, Mary Anne (Ragan) Taylor, by Charles Dallton. There was born to them seven children, 3 boys and four girls, all living save one, George Washington, who died February 19, 1856 when 3 years and 18 days old. In 1863 they moved to Iowa and located in Cass County where they lived for three years, and then moved to Lucas County in August of 1868. She was baptized by Robert Reed in English in Marion County. Some years after this they moved to Vernon County, Missouri, where the husband and father died and was buried at Montivello Mo. in the fall of 1886. There the mother and daughter, Martha Ellen ("Aunt Mattie" who never married) moved to southwest Kansas, where they have since lived. Mother Ragan gave her whole life to her children. They were ever in her thoughts. She toiled night and day that they might have a good life. And while not active in religious circles, she taught her children honesty, industry, and economy, both by precept and example, and also that they must love and fear the God of the bible." I don't know if the above helps anyone, but I thought I would send it just in case. There is also no date on the note and as it is typed I don't know who the author was but it was probably not my mother. There appears to be a discrepancy or two in the info but I thought someone might recognize either the McDonald family or the children of Henry and Nancy. I also want to ask if anyone knows if the "American Bottoms" is in Missouri or Illinois or both, as I have other info that Nancy McDonald was born in Missouri not Illinois as the above note would suggest. Thanks. Stephen Carlile
