    1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] NORTHERN MICHIGAN, NEWSPAPER SURNAME INDEX
    2. Hello cousins! The following article came from the Ancestory Daily News. It describes a database that's now available (for 10 days) to research. If there's any family you're researching from Northern Michigan you may find this interesting. Michael W. RAGAN ============== RAGAN-ROOTS List Moderator ============== NORTHERN MICHIGAN, NEWSPAPER SURNAME INDEX (Update) The counties of Cheboygan and Mackinac, in northern Michigan, have been home to a number of newspapers since the mid-1800s. Collected from 14 different newspapers published in the two counties, this database is an index of persons whose names appeared in these publications for one reason or another between 1871 and 1929. This update to the existing file brings the total to about 26,700. It was compiled from records contained in the Cheboygan Public Library, St. Ignace Public Library, Mackinaw Public Library, and the State of Michigan Library at Lansing. Death notices, marriages, anniversaries, divorces, adoptions, and naturalizations are among the most common reasons a person's name would appear in the newspaper. Married women are listed under both their spouse's name and their maiden name. An asterisk indicates that only a microfilm copy is extant. Copies of individual articles can be obtained by contacting the Cheboygan Public Library, St. Ignace Public Library, or Mackinaw Public Library. Bibliography: Jahn, Patricia C. 1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] Regans of Drinagh West, Co. Cork
    2. I am looking for relatives of William Regan (or O'Regan) of Drinagh West, Co. Cork. He was my great-great-grandfather. His daughter Bridget (b. ca. 1842) married my great-grandfather John Connolly on 23 February 1865, in the church at Drinagh West (which no longer exists, save for the tower), and they had ten children (who were baptised in Leap rather than Drinagh). According to Griffith's Valuation, William Regan was major occupier in Drinagh West, leasing 134 acres from Immediate Lessor Richard Henry Decie (this amounted to half the townland). Denis Regan and Patrick Regan also held property in the same townland. The cemetery in Drinagh West (surrounding the lost church) includes a tombstone for Daniel Regan (b. ca. 1875), who served in the Royal Navy as chief gunner for the H.M.S. Dreadnought. There is an adjoining tombstone for a William O'Regan, who would have been born in 1865/66 (probably both of these are too young to be my great-grandmother's brothers). According to his tombstone, Daniel was married to Mary (no surname given) and lived in Leap. Does anyone have any information on this line? Sheila Connolly

The name of the book is: "The Lineage of the Amos Ragan Family" (c) 1976 by Elizabeth Ragan It was published by the Hall Printing Company in High Point, North Carolina I'd say it's probably out of print by now. I found my copy at Barbara Green's Used book site on the Web a couple years ago. I have seen it in other places too though. Try this site: http://www.bibliofind.com/ Once you get there click on the 'search' button and do a search for author, title or whatever. (You'll find plenty of books on our Prez-Uncle Ronnie) I just checked and they seem to have 3 copies currently listed. Two of them for $22 and one for $35. I did the search using 'Ragan' in the author slot and 'Amos Ragan Family' in the title slot. Good luck Michael W. 2. Hi folks, Brother's Keeper is a DOS genealogy share ware program. While I don't use it, I do know several folks that do, and they seem to like it. But like all programs, it to seems to have some draw backs. I happened to like my FTM 7.0.... However, there are several excellent programs out there. One other thing that should be considered, is how well you understand computer language. If you don't understand a lot of it, like most of us (in other words you aren't a programer or such) you might had better stick with a genealogy program who has some support systems in place. There are a few excellent programs that are out on the market, look super, but have no off line or on line profession support staff, albeit sometimes they have fellow users support staff. You have to consider what you think you will need, want and can do when making your choice. Cheryl

    2. Josie, I'm not familiar with Brother's Keeper. Perhaps someone else can help you with that software. I know that Reunion has the option of marking certain people/lines (ie. descendants, ancestors of certain people). Then I can export a Gedcom of everyone that's marked. Makes it nice if someone doesn't want their living relatives made available to others. Reunion also has an option to create reports (Ahnentafel, Family History, Register reports, Descendant charts). And these reports can be created of just the peopke marked if I wish. Later and good luck! 2. Josie, I would *love* to include your family tree into our RAGAN-ROOTS database. Just send what you'd like to have entered to me via private email. As for your question about GedComs ... A GedCom is a text file format that lets genealogy programs share information. The info can be shared by different software and/or across platforms (PC-.Mac, Mac->PC). You'll need a genealogy program to use it. And there are several different software programs to choose from. Some are shareware and others are commercial. I use a Macintosh and really *love* the Reunion software. I have FTM too, but don't like it as well as Reunion. Once you have a genealogy program with GedCom capability you can surf over to our cousin Bill REAGAN's site (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billreagan/) and download the main RAGAN-ROOTS GedCom. I'd also like to announce that RootsWeb has just given me web Space for our RAGAN-ROOTS database. I've done the preliminary work, but haven't yet been able to upload our GedCom to it. I may need help from some of you Web experts with this one. Anyone care to volunteer? (Sorry but I'm a Web Dummy.) Good Luck, Michael W. 3. Just thought you may be interested in knowing that the Ragan (our spelling) name is quite rare in the UK. I've never met one I wasn't related to in all of my 50 years. Its quite an eerie feeling to see the names of other Ragans in the US, especially when they have the same first names as my immediate family. Also, a lot of your place names are the same as english place names so it gets a bit confusing for me. I'm one of the Ragans who keep hitting brick walls. Originally, our branch of the family came from Gateshead a large industrial town in the North East of England, close to the border with Scotland. I've tracked them back there to the beginning of the 1900s but that's as far as I have got. Gateshead attracted a lot of immigrant workers following the potato famine in Ireland. Trouble is it also attracted a lot of Norwegian workers and I've heard that there are quite a few Ragans over there. Not to mention Ragans in Scotland - that's just a few miles up the road from Gateshead.
