Hello cousins! Here's a special offer for everyone: A few years ago I purchased a "Census Index" on the RAGAN/REAGAN/REGAN surname. It's a computerized index so I can do a search with my word processor. I runs from the 1790's (and before) up through the 1870's. If you have an ancestor's name (head of household) you'd like me to look for just ask. Just provide the name, census year, and State. I should be able to give you the census page number where you can find them. That could make your search easier. I also have a marriage index for our surname. Let me give you an example of what you can get from this index. Let's say that you're looking for the the name Reason/Rezin RAGAN/REAGAN. Saearching through the index I found the following: ------------------------- Marriage Extract --------------------------- Warren OH REAGAN Reason SPRAY Mary 19 Apr 1818 Union SC REAGEN Reason SPRAY Mary 9 Apr 1818 (I have no idea why this couple show up in 2 different places on 2 different dates, but they do.) ------------------------- Census Extract ------------------------------ Clinton Co. As for the living persons... you might want to export a GedCom (of the persons you want to send me) from your database. Then open a new family file and import that GedCom. Then go through it and insert 'private' in all the date fields for the living persons. Next export a GedCom of the new file and send it to me. As for it's being used without your knowledge, that's a tough one. And I just don't see how we can prevent that entirely. I know for a fact that one of my early GedComs was downloaded from AOL and is now being used by that infamous 'Kindred Konnections' company. I know it was mine because I originally had a ggg-grandmother's maiden name spelled wrong. And there it is in their database. They have denied it, of course. I guess I shouldn't complain about 'KK' too much because we have gotten a few new members to our RAGAN-ROOTS discussion group from them. People have contacted me with comments like "I got your name from Kindred Konnections and ...." So they didn't swipe my database ... Uh-huh, sure. It just upsets me that someone will swipe others work and sell it for profit. It does happen though. Maybe I'm just jealous because I spend all this time on this project and don't make a dime. That's why she did all the research, to preserve her family history. (At least that's why I do it.) Once I'm gone I hope this RAGAN-ROOTS database is preserved somewhere for others to follow up on, add to, and use for their own research. I certainly don't want it to disappear after my demise. >Or perhaps a forum URL where we might read >a discussion about this? Don't know of any discussion groups right off the top of my head. Hi, could someone please tell me how/where to find my fathers birth certificate. This is the information that I have; Denis Francis Regan, born June 24, 1884 in or near Ballydehob, County Cork, Ireland. His parents were James Regan and Mary Daly b. 1847. I believe that he had a brother John. Ballydehob is about 12 miles south of Skibbereen. I think that the civil parish is Schull. Denis and his mother Mary Immigrated to Boston in 1906 on the ship SS Saxonia. I would like to try and find a copy of my fathers birth certificate but I do not know where to look. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you, Joe Regan [email protected]

Hi everyone!! Am hoping someone has Ragon/Ragan's in the state of Arkansas!! I am searching for info on my gg-grandmother, Jane Ragon. The only info I have is an approximate birth year as 1854. She married Samuel Brown June 6, 1862 in Johnson County Arkansas. Jane and Samuel had two daughters, Mary and Chrstine (my g-grandmother). Christine's death certificate lists her mother as Jane Ragon. Other sources have indicated Jane was born in Mississippi. There is an Eli Ragon family in the 1860 Johnson Co census, but no Jane. Does anyone out there have a Jane?? In the 1870 census for the Brown family, she is not there. Family word was that Mary and Christine were raised by their grandparents. I don't know if Jane died or left. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks so much. Sherri Musselman
Dave, That's a tough one. Checking the database I find no Joseph OLIVERs (I usually look for the spouse first), but *lots* of Elizabeth RAGANs. Elizabeth seems to be a very popular name over the years. Since they were married in 1850 I assume she was from say 15-25 years old, which would put her birthdate 1825-1835. And that doesn't seem narrow it down much. Plus if you add in the other variations of the surname (RAGAIN/RAGON.REGON/REAGAN/REGAN ...etc.) it doesn't help. My gg-grandfather was Isaiah RAGAN and he had a sister named Eliza (which I assume was a nickname for Elizabeth). Eliza was born ca 1834 in VA. Looking through the census records I'm now pretty sure that she married a Warren WILSON/WILLSON. They were in Hardin Co., IL. Isaiah died and was buried in Pope Co. Oh well ... sorry I couldn't help. He served our country during WWII, and was a great family man. He was preceded in death by wives Ruby Black Ragan and Elaine Smith Ragan. He is survived by his sons, Charles "Andy" Ragan, Clinton Ragan, and daughter Bonnie Ragan. He left 6 grandchildren. He died January 6, 2000 in Visalia, California. In God's Love, Devon Ragan

Susan, I just looked through the database and couldn't seem to spot any matches for you. Sorry. If you can use a GedCom why don't you download the latest version from Bill's site (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billreagan/index.htm) and see if you can spot anything I may have missed. I did find three William Wallace REAGANs (Sr., Jr., and III). But none seem to match yours. I would be glad to add your family to the database, with your permission (certainly don't want to step on anyone's toes). And I'll be glad to add your email as a contact for other researchers. Just let me know something. By the way I have in no way ever profited from (nor do I plan to profit from) this endeavor (RAGAN-ROOTS), other than the pleasure I get helping other RAGAN researchers to make new contacts and discover new cousins. I've tried to provide a place to store all our shared data, and to provide others a sort of clearing house for their RAGAN research. I haven't gained anything from this effort. In fact I guess you could say I have given up *many* hours of time I could've spent with my wife, my son, my daughters or bouncing my grandchildren on my knee. (Or doing something else.) I do wish to place a copyright on this entire collection of information because I have had some people express their wishes that I NOT give the data to companies like Family Tree Maker. Also I have discovered that one company in particular, who'll remain nameless (but their initials are Kindred Konnections ;-), have in the past downloaded our GedComs from AOL and sold this information on the Net. And that's NOT right! Our GedCom is FREE for others to use for personal research (not profit). I do not expect any of our submitters to give up any rights to their individual family research. Period. AND, as always, I do ask for input on any lineage submitted to the database. If I've made a mistake then I'm sorry. It certainly wasn't intended. AND I'm always glad to make any corrections, additions or deletions. My goal is to keep this database accurate (if at all possible). Just contact me via private email. If I don't respond within a few days just holler again. Over the past few years I have had some computer problems, hard drive crashes (...etc.) and I have managed to lose emails and other data. Plus I try to juggle several hundred emails every day (and it ain't always easy fans) and sometimes I do make mistakes. 'Nuff said. Michael W. Hello cousins, Well today was a very beautiful day here in Stevenson, Alabama. I had a doctors appointment in Chattanooga early this morning. Got a good report on my eyes (always good to hear for a photographer). And some more good news: I'm very pleased to announce that we now have a new RAGAN-ROOTS GedCom available for your inspection. You'll find it at two different locations (so far). One is in the Genealogy Forum on AOL (Keyword - Roots). At least it should be available by now since I uploaded it last night The other place is at our cousin Bill REAGAN's site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/billreagan/index.htm Our GedCom now contains 34,017 people! Of course not all are RAGAN/RAGIN/RAGON/REGAN/REAGAN (...etc.). And I know that we have some duplicates in the file. That's just part of the game friends... For our new members: This is a GedCom that has been compressed using the Zip format. If you have a PC you'll need the PK-Zip/UnZip (or similar) software. Our Mac friends will need ZipIt (or similar) software to decompress the file. The file is about 1.6 MB in size. After downloading and decompressing the file you'll need a genealogy software to import and use the GedCom. I don't know why I'm typing all this info.... Tell you what, I'll just paste the disclaimer file I've posted with the GedCom. It has all this info. ;-) Please read the following before downloading the file: Dear Cousin, I make this file available to you for your research and personal use only. Permission is not granted for you to publish this file in any way shape or form, either hard copy, electronically or by any other means. This file was exported from our RAGAN-ROOTS family database and contains everyone in it with the name RAGAN (and all variations) that I had through 31 Dec 1999. It also has as many RAGAN descendants as I was able to come up with at this time. The file now contains 34,017 people. It was exported as GEDCOM v.4.0 in the MS-DOS character format It was compressed using ZipIt (v1.4) for Macintosh. If you use a PC you'll need to use PK-Zip/UnZip to decompress it. Once it's unzipped you'll have the GEDCOM. Then you'll need to import it into your genealogy software. Please don't ask me how to do this since all software is different. I use Reunion 6.0 on the Macintosh platform. The file is a little over 1.6 MB in size. Once it's unzipped it should be about 7.5-8 MB. After being imported into your genealogy software it will probably be much larger, perhaps 14 or 15 MB. This file may contain some errors so please understand that I did not do all the research here. Some of it I did research, but most of these lineages were submitted to me by members of our RAGAN-ROOTS discussion group. I need to depend on them to do the research. I can't do it all. My software was supposed to export all my notes in the file. If any notes, references or sources are missing contact me via private email and I'll attempt to get them for you. One of the branches of Timothy RAGAN & Mary LARY has been contested by some other RAGAN/REAGAN researchers. That branch is their son, John who m. Mary MORRICE. Their children are not proven. And one son, Charles is strongly suspected to belong to another couple. I'm starting to strongly suspect that Ira and either Timothy (or Timothy's father) were the two original RAGAN/REGAN Immigrant brothers we've discussed in the past. I'm also of the opinion that Timothy's father was probably named Cornelius. There is some sparse evidence of a Cornelius RAGAN/RIGGAN living in MD in the mid to late 1600's. He witnessed a couple wills back then. And Timothy named one of his sons Cornelius. There's no proof of this yet, but if you can show any proof please contact me right away. If you submitted your lineage and it's not in this file please accept my apology. Some submissions were a little difficult for me to understand so they're not included here. If I'm not clear on how the different lineages fit together I won't put them into the database. I think from now on I'll ask that people submit their lineages in GEDCOM format. That will save me a lot of time, plus eliminate any typos on my part. Also if you see any people (spouses, siblings, children) missing please let me know. Tell me exactly where they belong-ie-The wife of Isaiah RAGAN (1842-1877) was Susan Mariah MARTIN (1838-1906). She was b. in Hardin Co., IL and d. in Pope Co., IL. and her parents were ... etc. That's it fans! Go ahead and start your download. And enjoy. Thanks for all your help with RAGAN-ROOTS. George, Hope you don't mind that I'm going to send your answer via the group. Perhaps I can answer some questions that others may have about getting their family into our database too. Looking through the database I see 7 George Washington RAGANs, 7 George W. RAGANs, and *lots* of George RAGANs. I couldn't say if I have your particular grandfather or not. It would help if you'll send me the birth & death dates/places and spouses name. I see no Dallas Edwards, but there are *lots* of Williams. I'll need more info on your family to give you an answer. I'll be glad to add your family as a separate line though. All I need are the names, dates, places, wives names (and their parents if you have them), dates places ...etc. Also any siblings names, dates, places ...etc. Just put your info together in any manner you can and I'll get it into our database. Also be sure that any living people approve of being included in the file. Or if they don't wish to have their info made public on the net I can include them in the database, but not in any uploaded GedCom. (Be sure to specify which ones want to be held out though.) Of course the best way to send me a file for the database is in a GedCom. That way it'll be added much quicker, and there's a less chance I'll make any typos when adding your family. (Of course to use a GedCom you'll need some genealogy software with GedCom capability.) Just get it to me any way you can. I'll handle it. And thanks for sharing your family with our group.
