Our RAGAN women, especially the Cherokee ones, live well into their 90s and 100s. My grandmother, who is a Ragan granddaughter, is 88 and still pushing a lawnmower, driving a car, volunteering two days a week at a homeless shelter and cooking more food than we will ever eat. Her older sister, Erin, is stomping the globe as we speak. And, like the previous respondent said, they grew up eating what they grew in the garden, drinking milk warm from the cow and water untreated out of the spring. They used homeade honey to sweeten and, with a family of 12 children, each one took a hoe after a breakfast of cornbread and sorghum syrup, hit the fields to hoe and hand pick the bugs off the corn. Their old place still stands. Sometimes I would just like to be a time traveler! Alicia

Hi Cousins, My ggg-grandfather, Nathan Ragan/Ragon, b. ca 1755, d. ca 1835, has a son, George W. Ragan, b. 3, Aug,1824 and died 12 Oct. 1914. Father and son total lifespan approximately 160 years. James
Hello from western Washington! My paternal side of the family is the Regan (originally O'Regan) group. I have traced them back to the late 1700s, and it seem that all the men have died very early: gg grandfather died 57 yo, g grandfather died 37 yo, grandfather died 58 yo, father died 54 yo, my brother and I are both in our 60s. The principal cause of death seems to be heart disease. On another matter, I would be very grateful if someone could help me locate the family of Clem Regan, son of William Regan. Clem was born circa 1906. The rumor is that he passed away in either Oregon and Washington, but I cannot seem to confirm that with death indices. In case you might be interested, my gg grandfather's brother John O'Regan went to Australia and then to New Zealand in the middle of the 1800s looking for gold. I have a 12 page letter he wrote to his grand niece Nellie in Glendive, Montana. The letter was written in 1899 from Auckland, N.Z. Recently I came in e-mail contact with a young woman from Auckland researching such letters, and she says she can help me locate information on old John O'Regan, someone of whom nothing is known by his family except for the letter. The letter, by the way, contained a lot of interesting family history. Happy New Year! Dennis Regan.
Since I am just beginning my search, can anyone direct me to any web sites regarding this surname. Thanks. Joan ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
This carries over into the female lines also, as Aunt Bead Bender (Isaac Payne, wife Jane/Joan Ragan of Rowan County, NC, James Payne her grandfather and her mother Sarah Francis Payne who married a Huntington) they lived into their 90's and even one son Oscar Huntington lived to just a few days short of this 102nd birthday. And mostly in good health and memory. For the most part these families lived on the land as farmers, dairymen, etc. and ate basic food raised on their land. Makes a person wonder doesn't it... Pat Mitchell of Bloomington, IN
Regarding the longevity of the REAGANS...unfortunately I only have information on ONE Reagan...my great-grandmother, Sara Francis 'Fannie' Reagan-Rowland...she only lived 50 years. 1854-1904...what a shame. So glad the rest of you got to enjoy your Reagans......... Bren [email protected]
A Ragan tribute not often discussed but by which probably many an Irish toast drunk has been drunk unto it (which probably led to yet another situation deserving of a toast!). And then the Cherokee half of us could whoop out our peace pipes and have a naming ceromony. Anyway, Grangrats to Joan's, (was it) Granpa? ANW
I'm sorry, but I have to add my great aunt here. She was not of Ragan blood was born in Canada of hard working English immigrants. Great Aunt Jane was born in 1888 and lived to 103 years and almost 9 months. She lived in a small ocean community and worked hard all of her life until the last 5 years, when my aunt had to put her and her baby sister in a nursing home. Until that time she lived in her own house After she retired she would go back to work if she wanted anything expensive. She was a teacher, a secretary and taught illeterates at the Army base. But I think that the hard work, self reliance, and plain good eating and living says a lot for these old timers. Maybe we could all learn a lesson from them. Joan, I'm sorry to say I haven't a connection at this point, but...would like to add that your ggfather has proven that it's NEVER too late to love!! Bren
Hello, I am new to the list and researching the Reagan name. My grandmother was Ellen Mary Ragan (Nalls) of Alexandria, VA. Her father was Daniel Reagan. I was told that when she married, her name was misspelled on the marriage certificate. Anyhow, her father Daniel Reagan had a small diary farm in Fairfax, VA. and was married to Kate Desmond. I know Ellen Mary had three brothers Tim, Dan, and ? and sisters (not sure of #) May, Margaret, Annie. Her grandfather's name was Jeremiah Reagan who, I was told, came over from County Cork (or maybe his parents?) He was married to a Fitzgerald. I think the most interesting thing I have learned is that my ggrandfather remarried after Kate Desmond died. He married a 23 year old woman named Isabel Mercer and supposedly had a child by her. He was 73. There was an article in the paper which I have asked my aunt to send me. Unbelievable! If you have any info on my relatives, I would appreciate it if you would get in touch with me and I look forward to visiting with you on this list. Thanks, Joan ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
