    2. While I am sure things were worse at Thule than at Fort Sill, the soldier who served at the former certainly reminded me of the attitude at the latter. With "Papa" and Jeanette moving, my email correspondence has been reduced and I appreciate the daily laugh or two that I get from you. Love, Grandpa Ragan

It would probably be interesting to know. I wonder if any of our RAGAN-ROOTer cousins knows anything about it? > 2-Any information on when and why Nathan changes his name from Riggin >to Ragan? Changes of the spelling of our surname happens quite often. Not only our surname, but others as well. I guess we have to understand that years ago our ancestors may not have had the education we get today. So when the census taker came around to interview the people, they may not have known how to spell their names correctly. Sometimes the census taker would just have to make an educated guess. In different census' (and other dicuments) I've found my own ancestors surnames spelled RAGAN, RAGIN & RAGON. > 3-My birthdate for Nathan, son of John Riggin, Jr is 1770, born in Maryland, >and I > was wondering if you can substantiate this fact as I can't mine? This info came from two different RAGAN-ROOT cousins UGeorg~ F. RIGGIN <gfriggin yahoo.com> & James <[email protected]>. Perhaps they can answer this question for us. Others who have contributed to this family lineage include Ivon RAGAN <[email protected]> and <[email protected]> You see I don't do all the research found in our database. I'll accept wht you submit, but the research is up to you. It would be helpful if people would submit their 'proofs' so others can verify the information. Some do send me their proofs, but not all. >(I don't mean to be offensive, just wanting my facts to be correct.) > No offense taken. Question everything. If it's my family we're talking about I always ask for the proofs. If you're trying to prove lineage for the SAR or DAR you *have* to have them. Sometimes it'll be 'primary' proofs, sometimes it may be 'secondary' proofs. Primary being actual birth/death certificates, court, land, or census records, Bible or church records ...etc. Secondary records include books, biographies, articles ...etc. And again question *everything*. In one biography book (from southern Illinois) I found my 3g-grandmother was named Mary LEPER, b. ca 1806, PA. Later I found she was actually Mary LEEPER. It was secondary evidence, but since we found that Alexander LEEPER had a dau named Mary, widow of William RAGAN, of Illinois (from another boigraphy book on Guernsey Co., OH), we were able to make the link. And Alexander was named in the will of Lt. Samuel LEEPER (Rev. War officer). >Any help you can provide and added information you may have available would >be appreciated. Thank you for your time. > >Mike Ragan >Dallas, TX Always glad to help Mike (hey you have a good name ;-) I may not have all (or any) of the answers, but I may be able to put you in touch with someone who does. 2. Lonna Jean Conroy
    3. Hi Rebecca and other RAGAN Rooters, There is some thought that Joseph Wesley RAGAN is the older brother of John Wesley RAGAN b 13 May 1819 probably in TN. John Wesley RAGAN was the son of Jesse RAGAN and Nellie PARISH. John Wesley RAGAN married my g-g-grandmother's older sister, Letticia TYCER in Charlotte, Dickson Co., TN 04 March 1838. It is believed that six of nine of their children were born in Dickson Co., TN prior to the family moving to the Dallas, Texas area about 1855. This connection seems hard to prove but perhaps Michael or someone on the list will have convincing information. If I can be of further help, just let me know. I look forward to hearing from you and/or others who have information about this line. Lonna Jean Conroy (Idaho) Working file: May contain errors. 2. Alicia, I'm going to answer your email by sending a copy to our group. This contains some info that may help some of our other cousins. I know a little, very little. Are you talking about Randoplh Co., GA or AL? Is there a Randolph Co., AL? I just did a search through our database and only found Randolph Co., GA, VA, NC, IL. (not all were RAGANs - see the report below. There were 55 hits.) > The information I need is about to go with a 90 year old aunt. She keeps >promising to talk, but doesn't. And I guess a well brought up Southern >girl just doesn't press a 90 year old aunt. > >Bummer. Bummer is right. It may be hard Alicia, but you *need* to get her to talk to you. Make it a point to go visit her and be persistant about it. Spend some time with her, ask questions. Ask her if she has any old photos of the family that she might show you. See to it the photos are marked with the names of the people in them (after she's gone you won't know who they are). Ask her about her parents, about her grandparents, about her g-grandparents, about her siblings ...etc. Show her that you're interested in her family. You are aren't you? Then ask her kiddo! Once she's gone all her information will be gone with her. Many times I could kick myself for not spending more time with my grandparents asking questions. But now they're all gone. Now it's just TOO LATE. Of course back when they were all alive I wasn't all that interested in genealogy. Fortunately when my grandmother RAMER passed away back in 1985 I had a chance to sit down with grandpa and go through a lot of their old photos. He gave me quite a few of them and I wrote names on the back of everyone he knew about. I even wrote names on the back of the photos he didn't give me. (I inherited them later.) I'm sure glad I did that! > >Oh, well, Happy Birthday to your brother from a Ragan cousin in Cullman >Co. > >Alicia Here's the result of a search through the database for "Randolph Co" (if you're interested in seeing more on any of these people send me the "ID" number listed. 1. [RAGAN-ROOTS-L] RE-exporting a GedCom for our main database
    2. In a message dated 3/28/00 3:35:27 PM, GAEILGE 7 writes: >MIKE >AS SOON AS I FIND OUT HOW TO DO THAT I WILL SEND IT TO YOU. > DON DON, Good. Just let me know when you're going to send it. It should'nt be too hard. Look at your instructions under "Exporting GedComs". Once you get it exported just send it via email as an attached file and I'll take it from there. What I'll do is import it into a new file, open it and make a compasison to our existing database. Then I'll mark the people we don't have and put them into the main database. One thing you need to consider is people who are still living. Sometimes they may object to being listed. They might consent if you list their birthdates as "Private". Or you can just request that I don't "mark" them in the main database. (That way when I export a new GedCom to be posted on the Net they won't be included.) Whatever...just be sure to check. I have had objections in the past and I certainly don't want to upset anyone. It's a privacy thing I guess. Sometimes people will allow their names and dates to be listed as long as they're not included in the GedComs I post on the Net. And I can handle that. Personally I don't understand why anyone would object, but then I'm a genealogist. I want to be sure *all* our research and information on my family is preserved for all our future descendants to research.
