I need help with my Ragan ancestry. My great-grandfather was George Ragan from Orange, Durham or Person county NC. He married a Cora Evans from Mangum, Orange County NC sometime after 1900. Cora Evans was the daughter of Smith Evans. George and Cora were to parents of my grandmother. Both Cora and George died when my grandmother was three or four years old and she went to live with the Evans family. My grandmother never really knew anything about her father George except that he had been kicked by a horse and killed. I can remember there being some other Ragans that were some how related to my gandmother but I do not know how they were related. My mother's memory is not very good any more so she is no help. The best I can come up with is that these other Ragans were either George's brothers or cousins. The wife of one of the other Ragans was Dora and I think her husband's name was Jessie. I found a relative from the Evans family that said she had a copy of the marriage record that stated that George was born in 1875 and that his father was J L Ragan. Please check your data to see if you can trace my George Ragan and tell me who his family was. One issue I did not raise in the last note re Caswell Co petition... John, Ralph, and Richard Regan ( any spelling)that are sons of Joseph Jr, all had their sons a tad off the norm. These boys were slow starters. They all have room for a first wife. Any children by a first wife would be out and about and taken care of, so not in the will. ...often the case. There is a will in MD that drives us batty...it states " to eight of my children"...then it never mentions any but the 8..crikey ! And it's a Charles, too. Joseph Senior married Elizabeth Gadd. She is claimed as the granddaughter of Thomas Gadd, the one time military defender of Jamestown. In 1722 (?) Thomas was off site with troops when Opanancanough tried to wipe out the colony. He returned in time to salvage the remnants of the English group. There is an early census taken of the left bank settlement forget date, but Thomas and an Elizabeth ( presumably his wife, are listed in it amongst all the Swedes. Ergo, it must be later than 1638. The Caswell Co., NC, website under the "History" states that in 1771, 300 men signed a petition to setoff Caswell Co. from Orange Co., NC. Among those 300 men are the names of John Ragon Sen' and John Ragon Jur'. The copy of the transcription I have the names are not alphabetized but, ,the surnames of family members are listed as a group. The two Ragons are listed together. These may not father and son as I understand that it was common practice if two men were of the same name the older would also be listed as "Senior, and the younger as "Junior. James H. James, I received most of my info from a James Ragon online and Ancestry.com. Also there are many Ragans in Dickson Co, TN, the line my husband is from. Alan Ragan there gave me the site of a Mat Ragan site that also provided the information. The town of Dickson itself had a very prominent Ragan, Henry, who owned several businesses there and was a well respected man. These Ragans are related to Nathan. My memory right now is vague due to the fact I am working on a Walker genealogy and it has been awhile since I looked over my Ragan material. You probably know more about the Ragans than I. Brenda, The John Ragan who md Ann Bell was b. 1730s. He is possibly s/o Joseph b. 1710/12. This John had sons: Jacob, William & Joel. I am familiar with the John b. 1699/1704 d. 1767. I have only 3 sons listed for him: William b. 1730, Benjamin b. 1731 & Jesse. I do not have a John Jr listed for him. Did elder John leave a will to prove he had a son John Jr? Is there proof that John b. 1699/1704 had a son John Jr? Matthew Ragan died 30 March 1716 Stafford Co., VA. No additional info William died 21 Nov 1744 Stafford Co., VA. As for Charles, according to Parish Records, his children were: Elizabeth b. 20 Oct 1731 md Wm Powell Katherine b. 1 Feb 1735 John b. 1736 James b. 1738 Elisha b. 1740 no others mentioned Jemima Regan's birth is not listed in he Parish Register, but her marriage to George Oliver is 1 Aug 1745. >From her marriage date he was born abt 1727. Where did you get the info "Charles b. 1734 md to Elizabeth Henry?" as s/o Charles? Is this supposedly the Charles of 1775 Dunmore VA? He has 5 sons: William b. 1758 Charles b. 1760 Henry b. 1762 John b. bet 1766-1772 Ahimaz b. 1774 Charles is in Shenandoah (formed from Dunmore) in 1779 with deed of 112 acres. Charles & his son Charles Jr are listed in 1785 Shanandoah Tax List 1787 Shanandoah VA Charles Ragan & Wm Ragan Also the proof of marriage of John to both Rebecca & Mary? When & where did he marry these two? Interestingly John of Bute/Warren NC was married to a Mary. He died 1790. Could this be him? He had sons: Mathew, James, & John. Did any of these o to SC? Johns on James had sons: John, James, Charles, Peter, William. As for James b. 1738 s/o Charles is there proof/evidence he md X3? What places did he settle? I do have in my notes a James b. abt 1740 who md 1st Elizabeth Hayes 2nd Nancy Cook, & 3rd Rebecca. However, I did not have the father of James identified. This James supposedly died in 1827 Knox Co., TN
Joan regan is said to have married John Wood Jr. John Wood Sr 1709 Charles Co., MD will list his wife Margaret, his son JOHN, daughter Mary Williams & Eliza Killingsworth. His other children Elijah, Jane, Ann, Sarah, & Hannah Wood. Test: Mark Attkins, JOHN RAGAN, Edward Chapman. This John Ragan is likely the son of Jaon Ragon md to John Wood Jr.
Maryellen, There is a JAMES & John Ragain in 1769 Granville. This James could have served in Rev War. -----Original Message----- From: Maryellen Horrigan Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2007 8:36 AM To: ragan-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS] trouble in NC James, You are absolutely right about the marriage age...dumb, and tired...however, there is still a claimed birth of 1742 for the Revolutionary soldier, who would have been 28 in 1770 , not 13-14. I have never seen William's name along with Elizabeth Bridget in the Virginia records. No husband listed. However, I , mixed my Williams...sorry. I do think, however, we have a missing generation of a William or by a William. How do we know that the man born in 1722 ( I'd like the source that says Wm is father with E. Bridget) is the man married to Priscilla? I have a Photostat of the marriage bond of Powel Regins and Ruthe Trice...no date on it. ( must have been on the column heading) They were married in Orange County. The bond was L500 NC currency Gray Barber put up the bond with Powel. ...wow ! Powel and Gray signed their names. I also have the bond for Ephraim Riggains of Orange County NC 11 June 1807 . The bondsman was Robert Moore, and the bride to be was Ruth Izzale ( Isreal ?) Both Ephiam( his sp) and Robert signed their own names. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to RAGAN-ROOTS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
I would now like to address James Joseph Riggins and William Powell Riggins of MO. Also a Washington Riggins that I found land records on in MO. A Washington Riggins is found buying land in 1827 in Cole Co., MO along with a Benjamins Riggins. I believe this to be the George Washington Riggins of KY listed in the William David(Powel) Riiggins line. Notes from a letter written to Virginia DeWan on 25 May 1991. from a researcher and I can only guess the last name was Riggins. In part, "one was written by a daughter of Right Riggins of ILL to her cousins in Casey Co., KY. With the comment that she wanted to be remembered to her Uncle Washington, Her father's brother George Washington Riggins, b 10 Apr 1779 was the only one who was known as Washington who was of the proper age to be an uncle. More evidence that David, George and Right were brothers." This lead me to believe that it is the one and same Washington Riggins who bought land in Cole Co.,Mo and then went back to KY later on. Now we find James Joseph Riggins in Mo below is part of a history what was written by Dr. George Washington Riggins his son. So as you can see he came to Mo in 1816. James can be found with as James and also Joseph. We are calling him James Joseph. James Joseph married on 10 Nov 1810 in Warren, Ky only a couple of Co's from Adair Co., KY. Note all the land record in MO are listed to James Riggins. FROM THE CEMETERIES IN COLE COUNTY, MO. AS RECORDED IN THE 1930'S - NOTES PAGE 203: PAGE 60 --JAMES RIGGINS HAD AN ADMINISTRATION DATED 8 JAN 1848 (418A-12), WITH WILLIAM P. AND THOMAS B. RIGGINS AS THE ADMINISTRATORS. JAMES WIFE, BURZILLA, BORN 1795, D AFTER THE 1850 CENSUS. JOSEPH RIGGINS, WAS BORN IN N.C., BUT WHEN QUITE A YOUNG MAN EMIGRATED TO KENTUCKY, WHERE HE MARRIED MISS BARZILLIA LAWLESS, THE MOTHER OF THE DOCTOR(George Washington RIGGINS). THEY LIVED IN KENTUCKY FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND IN 1816 CAME TO MO. AND LOCATED IN HOWARD COUNTY, AND BUILT THE FIRST CABIN WHERE THE TOWN OF OLD FRANKLIN WA AFTERWARDS BUILT. THE SITE OF THE PRESENT CITY OF BOONVILLE, OPPOSITE THE TOWN OF OLD FRANKLIN, WA S THEN A DENSE THICKET, AND THE INDIANS ROAMED THE FOREST AND KILLED THE SETTLERS AT THEIR OWN SWEET WILL. MR RIGGINS HAD NO NEIGHBORS NEARER THAN THE FORTS ABOVE AND BELOW HIS BACK IN, AT TOO GREAT A DISTANCE TO AFFORD HIS CONSTANT PROTECTION. SEVERAL OF HIS NEIGHBORS WERE KILLED BY THE INDIANS, AFTER THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAD BECOME MORE THICKLY SETTLED. HE LIVED AT OLD FRANKLIN ABOUT FOUR YEARS AND THEN BOUGHT THE FARM UPON WHICH DOCTOR G W RIGGINS WAS BORN. HE SHORTLY AFTERWARDS MOVED TO COLE CO., MO, WHERE HE DIED IN 1849 IN HIS SEVENTY-THIRD YEAR. HIS WIDOW SURVIVED HIM SEVERAL YEARS AND DIED AT THE AGE OF EIGHTY YEARS. We also find both James and Powell Riggins on the 1819-1826 MO tax payers record from Calloway Co., Mo. I find 10 land records on James Joseph between 1835 thru 1852 in MO. James also had a son George Washington , William Powell , John, Thomas and a daughter named Lucinda Riggins. All family names we have seen over and over. William Powell Riggins came to MO at about the same time as his brother James Joseph. I also find land record on William under the names of William and also Powell. Have to believe it was the same one. There are a total of 9 records in Ralls and Aurdrain. Note was part of Ralls. Below is a copy of his will: FROM THE WILL OF POWELL RIGGINS FROM THE MEXICO, AUDRAIN CO., MO. COURTHOUSE: I, COURT CONKWRIGHT FOUND THIS ON 1 APR 1991 AND HAS A COPY OF IT. I POWELL RIGGINS OF THE COUNTY OF AUDRAIN AND THE STATE OF MO, BEING OLD BUT IN SOUND MIND AND DISPOSING MEMORY FOR WHICH I THANK GOD AND CALLING TO MIND THE UNCERTAINLY OF HUMAN LIFE AND BEING DESEROUS TO DISPOSE OF ALL SUCH WORLDLY ESTATE AS IT HAS PLEASE GOD TO BLESS ME WITH, DO GIVE AND BEQUEATH THE SAME IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER TO WIT: THAT IS TO SAY I DESIRE THAT ALL MY JUST DEBTS HE PAID. 2ND: I GIVE A BEQUEATH TO MY BELOVED WIFE PATSY RIGGINS ALL OF MY ESTATE, REAL AND PERSONAL AND TO MIXED AND TO ALL INTEREST THEREIN TO HAVE AND TO HOLD ABSOLUTELY TO DO WITH AND DISPOSE OF AS SHE SHALL THINK FIT DURING HER NATURAL LIKE AND IF IN CARE MY SAID WIFE, PATSY RIGGINS, SHOULD DIE WITHOUT ISSUE THEN THE BALANCE OF THERE SHOULD BE ANY LEFT AT HER DEATH, TO BE EQUALLY DIVIDED BETWEEN MY GRANDCHILDREN, THAT IS TO SAY, THE CHILDREN OF JAMES RIGGINS AND JOHN MINER AS I HAVE GIVEN IN MY LIFETIME TO MY SON JOHN RIGGIN THAT I EVER INTEND HIM TO HAVE IN MY LIFE OR AFTER MY DEATH; ALSO I HAVE GIVEN TO MY DAUGHTER NANCY BRASHEAR ALL I HAVE EVER INTENDED HER TO HAVE IN MY LIFE OR AFTER MY DEATH. IN TESTIMONY WHERE OF, I POWELL RIGGINS DO SET MY HAND AND SEAL THIS 22 DAY OF FEB 1853. WITNESS BY JOHN A PEARSON AND NANCY PERSON. I SUBSCRIBED THE TESTATIORS NAME AT HIS REQUEST JOHN A PERSON. POWELL WAS ALSO KNOWN AS WILLIAM POWELL RIGGINS, ONE OF THE 3 BROTHERS. William had the following children. James, John, Nancy and William. As you can see 3 of the children are family names once again. William Powell died in ca. 1853. One thing that kind of bothers me. I find land records on both a Powell Riggins and also a William P. Riggins. They are all in Audrain Co., MO. I also have a land record dated 27th of Aug 1831 for my Henry Riggin in Madison Co., ILL that has a witness as William P. Rigins(note spelling of last name).and Jarrot Dugger. I have always believe this to be the one and same William or Powell from Audrain Co., MO. I do know from family records that our Riggin family of Madison was very close to the Riggins family of Audrain Co., Mo. Just something else that I must think about. If any questions please let me know.
