    3. Brenda, I have that a John Jr is the father of Jason, Owen & Jesse. And since he is a "Jr" his father was likely John Sr of Orange/Caswell NC. Howver, I dont believe they are the John & John Jr of Somerset MD as John Jr had a son Nathan b. 1749. Both John Sr & Jr died in MD, so they cannot be the Johns of NC. I believe there was another Nathaniel & faher John Jr, but not of Somerset MD. -----Original Message----- From: Brenda Sent: Friday, September 14, 2007 7:10 PM To: ragan-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS] Fw: Re: Ragan, McIntosh I'm new at this and getting soooooooo confused. This John, son of Joseph Jr had a son John, but he wasn't born until 1774, so he didn't sign. John Riggan /Ann Bell could have been the Sr John to any of the young pups. He did not have a son John. Francis and Jane of VA had a son John who died in 1767, so he didn't sign. But this John is supposed to be the father of a William who died in 1813. William is said to have married Sarah Ann Warren. They had a son John born in 1767. That would be too young to have signed. Jesse, brother to William is also credited with a John, but he was born too late. John and Ann Bell have a grandson John via son Jacob, but he was born the year of the petition. There are some very young Johns through the John of Francis and Jane, but too young for our purposes. If the combination of John Sr and Jr is not found in some combination of John/Bell or Joseph Jr's John and a younger man, then we should look to VA and or MD for another family. 3. As recorded in "Old Timers of Sabine County, Texas, Vignettes of Pioneer Families" by Virgie Speights, published by S. Malone Printer, San Augustine, TX. page 36. MRS. MARGARET ANNA YOUNGBLOOD RAGAN DECEMBER 26, 1963 Mrs. Margaret Anna "Maggie" Youngblood Ragan will be 92 years old February 9, 1964, but a fresh complexion, twinkling eyes and amazing energy belie those years. Born in 1872 at the family home just past the bend in the north edge of Hemphill, on the Milam road, she is the daughter of the master James and Margaret Smith Youngblood, members of pioneer families in Sabine County. The Youngblood's came from Mississippi by the way of Louisana. Mr. Youngblood, oldest of 13 children, fought in 3 wars---Civil, Indian and Mexican--and did not receive a scratch. His relatives were not so fortunate, however. His father was killed in the Civil war (it is believed that he died in 1862); two brothers died in service, one lost an arm and another a leg. Mrs. Youngblood's grandfather, Robert H. "Bob " Smith was a man of means when he came to Texas. In the 1830's, persons desiring to become a citizen of Texas were required to have a sponsor who was already a citizen. Sam Houston, himself sponsored Mr. Smith, who lived on the Yellow pine Hi way where Roy Payne now lives. Bob Smith bought thousands of acres in many surveys in Sabine and other counties. On January 3, 1897, Margaret Anna was married to John A. Ragen, who was born where Woods Garage now is. He is the son of Dr. Jubal Harper and Martha Ann Broadway Ragan, pioneers from Virginia. Before they were married, they never went anywhere together. During the week, he would send her a note by a Negro boy telling her he would be coming to see her on Sunday afternoon at the home of her parents. Her sister and family did not get to the wedding because the oxen which were to pull the wagon got out of the pasture and could not be found in time. In 1900 they loaded up all their belongings in a covered wagon and drove a pair of mules to Greer County, Oklahoma to visit her father, sister and brother who had moved up there. It took them three weeks to get there, staying in wagon yards at night, and cooking in a "cook house" when they were in towns. Most of the time, however, they tied up by the side of the road, if you could call it a road, and did Thier cooking on campfires and slept in the wagon. They baked biscuits and cornbread everyday, using a "Dutch Oven" with 3 legs and a scooped out lid to put the coals on. She says it baked real good. After a week or two of visiting, they set out on the return trip, but stopped for a year at the Halsell Ranch where they both worked. While there they took a train to Wichita Falls to see Ringland Bros. Circus and came home that night after the show. It was the only train ride that Mrs, Ragan ever took. They finally returned to Hemphill because they did not like the severe weather, sand storms, wind and cold, and because they could not find a house to buy except a "dug out" This was a house built into the side of a hill with a portion of the hill used as walls so as to conserve building material which was quite scarce on the prairie in those days. Back in Hemphill, they bought a log house on 63 acres of land three miles south of town, which they farmed until 1928, when they traded with Bob Crowell and moved to Hemphill. Mr. Ragan died in 1958, and since then Mrs. Ragan has made her home with her only child, Miss. Willie Ragan of Houston. They spend time as possible at their home here. Mrs Ragan recalls an incident of their Oklahoma trip. While they were spending time in a Fort Worth Wagon Yard, with a rain coat hung over the front of the wagon sheet. She had laid out a pair of trousers on the spring seat for Mr. Ragan to put on in the morning, and during the night she saw rise up and back down. The next morning they were gone, but when Mr. Ragan went to feed his mules, there the pants hung. Since there was no money in the pocket, the robber evidently didn't care to keep them. James Youngblood is listed along with a brother and sister as living in Greer County Oklahoma and were the purpose of the above trip in 1900. However James Youngblood is listed on the 1910 Census of Sabine Co. TX. Therefore sometime between 1900 and 1910 he had returned to Hemphill. Charlie Royall Oct 18, 1999.

I think Teague and Daniel might connect (and Sharol is correct that Cromwell was a big part of the Irish wave of the 1650's)...and take Wm Powell and Francis and John with them. I think James and Joan , and Timothy are a separate matter.... but then I think people on line have them all scrambled...sigh. There is a cluster come out of DELMARVA, date is iffy, but before the Revolution. They contain Allens, Atkinsons, and Riggins. I have for Francis and Jane Riggins 2 sons (among others) I have Daniel dead in 1727 Bladen Co( not yet created, we have had this argument) and Joseph dead in 1727 Bertie Co. ( and dad Francis dead in 1727 Surry VA. Boy, that potato salad was a killer) Daniel, I guess, could have been Bertie...? Both men are dead by this survey, and both left sons Daniel and Joseph respectively. If this is not Daniel son of Daniel/d1727, in Bertie...who is he?

    3. James, you asked: " In 13 Mar 1760 a John Ragan Jr had 600 acres surveyed in Granville NC. Is this your John Jr as well?" Is this Hub Quarter Creek ? I ask because in 1755 Thomas Bell had 2 plots surveyed in Granville, St John's Parish on Hub Quarter Creek of 545 and 640 acres. The obscure designation SCC appears at the end of this record and then the names Thomas Harton and Jno Riggin. I know this is the land area we later find holding Joseph, John and a cast of other familiar characters. The Hartons and the Bells implies that this is the Daniel or Francis group...which does NOT exclude Wm Powell or James and Joan or Timothy, but the interconnection of the John R, Harton, Bell is strong, and the Joseph R is right with them. I'm not sure I can defend this statement, but I feel that as they entered NC in the 1750's, the R's connection between the Joseph R. and the Francis R/DanielR and the John R/Bell is more recent than any connection between Wm Powells, Timothy, James/Joan and the John/Bell, Fran/Daniel, Joseph R...These connections are further back in new and old VA and MD. By Old VA, I mean Isle of Wight and Surry, not Stafford or York, which I call New VA because they are after the dispersal. Maryellen

    3. Remember a Chas Regan married a Zillah Lindsey? I just found the following: Warren Co, North Carolina will book 7: will of Joseph Lindsey, 5 March1793;Nov Ct 1794. Names Wife Rachael; Sons Laban and Caleb(extr);Dtrs; Rebecca Ragan, Mary Hartgrove Searcy,Zellah Ragan, Milly Thurman, Darkas Lindsey,Sarah Lindsey, and fanny Watkins. (co Extr)friend Dennis Paschal. Wit Anderson Paschal (Jurat), Mary Paschal, and Denis Paschal (L) (Jurat) (Court, I know Virginia told you to keep an eye out for Paschals...call and ask her why) Please note that the Lindseys had two Ragan daughters ! If you could locate the geography of these in-law names, you'd have a chance of pinning Charles to a family-name cluster that arrived together. BTW, I have a fellow researcher on the Teague R line who uses a geo-locator program that we didn't need in MD's Eastern Shore because there is so much water you can pinpoint easily. But , I sure could see the use of such a program here...anyone use one ? Maryellen

    1. Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS] marriages
    2. Anne Washburn
    3. Dear Yvonna: My Ragans come from Person Co., NC, too, and they are almost impossible to sort out because of all the marriages between cousins! (Note well: spelling is completely irrelevant with the NC crew.) I found a George Ragan (22 yrs) in the 1900 census, Durham, Durham Co., NC. He was living with a 24 year old Thomas Ragan, 14 yr old Dora (wife of Thomas), a 20 yr old Robert. George & Robert were described as boarders. Perhaps they were all 3 brothers, or at least Robert & George were brothers, maybe Thomas was a cousin. In the 1880 Person Co., NC, census, a James Reagan and his wife, Evaline, were living with their children, Jesse (13), James (11), George (9), and Robert (6). There was a marriage of a James L. Ragan & Evaline Gravet in Person Co., 10 Mar 1863. Is it possible that this is the J.L. Ragan you are looking for? (I wouldn't worry too much about the discrepancy in ages. Census records are notoriously inaccurate in that regard.) In the 1870 Person Co., NC census, James Ragan, Evaline, Jesse T. (4) and James L. (1) (obviously Jr!) were enumerated. I wonder if the Thomas Ragan above was Jesse T. in 1870? The 1900 record was very difficult to read and Thomas could have not known exactly how old he was OR been trying to appear younger since his wife was only 14! I am glad to have had this research come up. In 1880, James & Evaline were living next door to one of my ancestors and it looks, circumstantially, that this James and Charles Ragan might have been related (ages are close and proximity of households). I did not have parents for Charles in my database nor this James L. at all. There were 4 men about the same age in the 1860 census, all named James Ragan and all living in Person Co. ARGH! (It does look like at least one of them was enumerated twice). A new trail to track! (PS, Mangum is in Durham Co. I found Cora there with her family in the 1900 census). 3. Brenda, could you possibly connect me to the Alan and Mat Ragan that you mention below? I am trying to find information on my gg grandfather, James Ragan, and they might have info that could help me. I noticed that you received information from James Ragon as well. Thank you, Bill Davis martybilld@bellsouth.net James, I received most of my info from a James Ragon online and Ancestry.com. Also there are many Ragans in Dickson Co, TN, the line my husband is from. Alan Ragan there gave me the site of a Mat Ragan site that also provided the information. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brenda" <b-ragan@comcast.net> To: <ragan-roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 14, 2007 12:22 PM Subject: Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS] Ragan, McIntosh

    3. If James the son of Wm Powell R, married Jane Dickson and had at least 4 sons, Thomas being #4, could we speculate whom the other 3 might be? They would start out, at least, in McMinn TN. James died there in 1843. Anyone?

    3. If this line comes out of Sabine LA before TX, there is a good chance it can be traced back to Francis of NC. There is a Ragan line in LA in the 1860's that married some Beards. The Beard are mine. Odd. Mch...Loved the Youngblood story. -----Original Message----- From: ragan-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ragan-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Charles Royall Sent: Saturday, September 15, 2007 9:51 PM To: ragan-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [RAGAN-ROOTS] RollCall My RAGAN that I know almost nothing about is: Jubal Ragan that married Martha Broadway, no dates or places for anything on them.
