    1. Re: [QUEEN] Radford Queen
    2. Carol Queen
    3. Hi all, I received a question about who this David Queen was. I went back in the archives and found this very good biography of this Queen family. I have placed this Francis (father of David), POSSIBLY erroneously, as the "missing" son of William Queen b. 1716 & Margaret Lewis. There is no PROOF that he is William's son, but, in my own sifting and sorting he seemed to fit very nicely. As always, if you find error in this outline, please straighten me out. I only know that this was done by a genealogist (professional, by the looks of it) that goes by the initials of "RTA". This was faxed to me back in April of 1996 by my friend in NC, from the archives or library in Raleigh I presume. Lots of good stuff here! QUEEN WILKES, R0WAN & IREDELL COS N. C. Rowan County was created In 1754 from Anson County, N. C. In Rowan County Deeds (1753-1779) Is found the following pertaining to one FRANCIS QUEEN: In DB 6, p. 427-429, 12 Dec 1762 William Harrison sold FRANCIS QUIENE, tailor, for 15 Pds lot #5 N Square In Salisbury, pg 429-430 25 Dec 1763 William Harrison sold to FRANCIS QUINE, tailor, lots #27 -and 28. p. 465-466 14 March 1764, FRANCIS QUINE tailor sold Robert Pearis,. merchant, lot #5 N Square Salisbury. p. 466-467, FRANCIS QUINE, tailor sold Robert Pearis, Merchant, lots 27 & 28 for 29 pds each, In the Rowan County Court of P&QS Minutes (1763-1774) 15 Feb 1771, King VS JOHN QUEEN, 25 Jan 1771, Bill of Sale from JOHN QUEEN to Jacob Brown for sundry things Is ordered recorded. There are no QUEEN wills recorded in the will books, of Rowan from 1753 through 1805. Iredell County was created from Rowan in 1788. In lredell County deeds from microfilm C.054,4000, is found the following pertaining to the QUEENS In Iredell County, N. C. DB A, p. 298, 4 May 1790 John King sold FRANCIS QUEEN for 150 Pds 400 ac both sides main Rocky Creek adj Robert King and William Hughes. DB E, p 547, 18 Dec 1797, NC granted Francis Queen (no acreage given) branches of Rocky Creek adj his upper tract at a stake in the Wilkes County Line, on ridge of Mountain. DB E, p 343, 22 Aug 1803, James Queen of the State of Virginia, County of (blank) sold Robert Gordon for 200 pds, 100 ac tract between two mountains, head branch Rocky Creek including the maple swamp, being granted James Purviance 1797 and by Purviance to Francis Queen 1797 and by Francis Quen to James Queen 1797. This is signed by James Queen. (Francis Queen has died by this time as will be shown later in this report). DB E, pg 647, 18 Dec 1797, NC granted James Queen 50 ac N fork Rocky Creek above his other land. DB H, p 319, 28 Dec 1812, James Queen of CLAYBORN COUNTY, TN, appointed my BROTHER, JOSEPH QUEEN of Iredell County to sell 50 ac land Rocky Creek, etc. Signed James Queen. DB H, p 424, 425, 22 Dec 1812, James Queen, of Clayburn County, TN, to Margaret Queen of Iredell County for $100, 100 ac land on waters Rocky Creek which was conveyed to James Queen by the last will & testament of Francis Queen, deceased, in words as follows: "I also give to my beloved son, James Queen, 100 ac land adjoining his own tract of land". Signed James Queen, with Joseph Queen as a witness. In the Iredell Co. Court of P & QS Minutes (1789-1834) microfilm C.o54.30001, pg 524, 3rd Monday may 1803, the last will & testament of Francis Queen was duly proven by Joseph Millsaps and James McHaegue. The court appointed Joseph & Margaret Queen administrators to the will annexed who were qualified accordingly. (a search in index of wills of Iredell county does not list this will, nor does a page by page search of the will book in which it would have been recorded reveal this will, which is unfortunate. Iredell Co. had a fire in it's courthouse and it is possible the will was destroyed or through carelessness was never recorded after it was probated in May 1803, rta) In DB G, p 366, 17 Aug 1811, David Queen sold Azel Sharpe for $250, 340 ac main Rocky Creek adj James Queen and Joseph Queen and James King, being part of 2 deeds sold to Francis Queen by John King 1783 and which right was conveyed to David Queen from his father, Francis Queen, by his last will & Tes. Gill, Wm. M. Allen, A. Mayberry, John & Cromwell Green). if paid, etc., mort. deed null & void. Signed by David Queen & Radford J. Queen. WILKES CO. DEEDS: Db Q, p 58, 8 Aug 1821 Joseph Queen, attorney for Margaret Queen, (Joseph of CLAYBORN Co., TN) to Turner Martin of Wilkes Co. for $100 for 100 ac in Wilkes Co. waters of Rocky Creek, in the line formerly dividing the county of Wilkes & Iredell, tract granted by State of NC to Francis Queen on 18 Dec 1797 and to James Queen by will of said Francis, and from James Queen to Margaret Queen 18 Dec 1812. Signed Margaret Queen by Joseph Queen, Atty (note-this explains why Joseph Queen was not in a census of 1820 in NC- rta) IREDELL COUNTY DEEDS-Db H, p 231, 16 Nov 1810 NC granted Joseph Queen 176 ac waters Rocky Creek adj Richard Cook and $. Mayberry. DB H, p 285, 25 Sep 1811, Azel Sharpe to Joseph Queen for 85 pds, 149 1/2 ac waters Rocky Creek, adj Polly Queen (have not identified this Polly Queen unless she was an unmarried daughter of Francis & Margaret). DB O, p 109, 2 June 1829, Josea Redmon, Executor of estate of Joseph Queen, deceased, to Alfred McClelland of Wilkes Co., 53 pds for 176 ac. (Joseph died in Wilkes Co., NC apparently having returned from Clayburn Co., TN and his will is recorded in Wilkes Co WB 4, p 109-rta) WILKES COUNTY, NC DEEDS- DB N, p 358, 7 May 1833, Hosea Redmon, Executor estate Joseph Queen, deceased (Hosea of Iredell Co.) to Livi Brotherton & wife Jane, formerly Jane Queen, of Wilkes Co., 70 pds for their share of 140 1/2 ac in Wilkes County on waters Rocky Creek adjoining Polly Queen. Witnesses: Ellis Queen and William Milsaps. DB S, p 404, 19 Sep 1855, Hughs Queen and wife Martha acknowledged the sale of their share of land of Hillory Gilreath on the Brushy Mtns on Fishing Creek. Acknowledgment made in Milledgeville, GA. In 1790 Federal census, Francis Queen is in Iredell Co., NC with 1 m over 16, 3 m und 16, & 4 females. . In 1800 pg 612 he had 1 m 10-16, 1 m over 45, 1 f und 10, 1 f over 45. In 1810, in Iredell Co., David Queen had 1 m 16-26 and 1 f 16-26 indicating they were just married (marriage bonds for Iredell Co were destroyed by the fire they had in their courthouse 1854). Joseph Queen listed 1 m und 10, 1 m 16-26 (a brother?) 1 m 26-45, 1 f und 10, 1 f 26-45, 1 f over 45 (believed to be Margaret). In 1820, David Queen is in Iredell p 236, with 4 m und 10, 1 m 26-45, 1 f und 10, 1 f 26-45. (from the deed in Wilkes Co stating Joseph Queen was in Clayburn Co., TN, it is apparent that Margaret also went to TN with Joseph, since she is not in the household with David Queen. Also note that James Queen went to TN in the lifetime of his father). In 1830, 0 43, Iredell Co., David Queen listed 2 m und 5, 1 m 10-15, 2 m 15-20, 1 m 40-50, 2 f 10-15, 2 f 40-50 (possibly one a sister?) and 1 f 70-80, who is Margaret Queen. In 1830 in Wilkes Co NC Martha Queen was listed with 2 m 5-10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 20-30, 1 f 5-10, 2 f 15-20, 1 f 40-50, so sometime between 1821 and the time Joseph Queen died in Wilkes Co in 1827, they returned from TN, and it is possible that after his death, Margaret Queen went over into Iredell and died in 1832 at the home of her son David Queen, with Joseph's widow Martha remaining in Wilkes. (There is also a record in the court minutes of either Wilkes or Iredell of the changing of the county line between the two counties during this period, which explains why their records are in both Iredell and Wilkes, for they lived on Rocky Creek in the Brushy Mountains which is a range of Mountains that are partly in both counties today-rta) >From the above records, Francis and Margaret (maiden name unknown) Queen had 7 children: 3 boys and 4 girls. James, David and Joseph were the males. Mary who married Samuel Correll is the only female that has been identified, since the will is not on record in Iredell Co. James went to Clayborn Co., TN, Joseph went to TN, but returned and died in Wilkes Co., NC, and David remained in Iredell Co., but I did not find him in 1850, however, his wife died before 1840 according to the census reading. And of course, Mary went to Indiana. Since no deeds mention any females, Margaret's will mentions only Mary, and Francis' will is not found, it is quite possible the other females on the census had died before Margaret made her will. >From census records in Wilkes Co and from his will, Joseph Queen and his wife Martha (maiden name unknown) had Elias (Elis), Francis who m. 19 Sep 1837 Wilkes Co to Lucy Anderson, James who m. 19 Dec 1840 Wilkes Co to Jemima Mayberry, HUGHS WHO MARRIED 24 MAY 1848 TO MARTHA L. GILREATH AND WENT TO GEORGIA, Jane who m. 27 Mar 1828 Levi Brotherton, Margaret who m. 4 Feb 1834 Litten Milsaps, Elizabeth and Alaminetta who m. 4 Aug 1840 Wilkes Co. to Cornelius Anderson. By 1850 only James Queen of the above children remained in Wilkes Co., NC. >From the same records of Iredell & Wilkes, David Queen and wife's name unknown, had Radford J. Queen who m. Mary Milsaps according to one of their children's death certs in Wilkes Co., Alfred m. 25 July 1837 to Susan Brotherton in Wilkes Co., Jesse m. 29 Aug 1837 Wilkes Co. to Nancy Milsaps, Emilia, Cyrus m. 18 Apr 1843 Wilkes Co to Martha Cook, Basti (female), Hartwell who married 15 Oct 1854 to Marh Adline Laws in Wilkes Co. and according to census a male unidentified. By 1850 Radford J., Jesse and Cyrus lived in Wilkes Co. and I do not find any of them living in Iredell. Since Francis Queen was the only Queen that continued in the Rowan and Iredell Co records, it is fairly certain that he was the progenitor of those in the report above. The records of Rowan Co, other than marriage bonds and census after 1773 and 1774, is not available to me in my own collection or in the public library. There are two published books on Rowan Co. and neither of these mentions either the Queens or the Corrells. (end of Queen report).
