CATHOLIC HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF WASHINGTON MEETING DATE: SUNDAY, JUNE 18, 2000 4:00 P.M. LOCATION: SACRED HEART CHAPEL ON THE HILL 16501 ANNAPOLIS ROAD BOWIE, MARYLAND SPEAKER: ROBERT EMMETT CURRAN, PH.D. DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY Sacred Heart Parish in Bowie, originally a Jesuit chapel and mission known as White Marsh, is the birthplace of the organized Catholic Church in the United States. It was here in 1789 that John Carroll was elected the first U.S. Bishop and the first Catholic college was founded in the form of an academy that became the future Georgetown University. The modest 18th century "chapel house" that witnessed these events is still preserved as part of the existing Sacred Heart Chapel on the Hill. By kind permission of the pastor, Msgr. John F. Hogan, our meeting on June 18 will be within the chapel walls. Dr. Robert Emmett Curran will speak on the events that took place here in 1789 and place these in historical context. Dr. Curran is the author of The Maryland Jesuits 1634-1833 (with Joseph T. Durkin, S.J., and Gerald A. Fogarty, S.J.), American Jesuit Spirituality: The Maryland Tradition, 1634-1900, and The Bicentennial History of Georgetown University, Volume 1, From Academy to University, 1789-1889. The Chapel on the Hill at Sacred Heart has been designated by the Archdiocese of Washington as a pilgrimage church for Jubilee Year 2000. Directions from Washington, D.C., and vicinity: Washington Capital Beltway exit 19 to John Hanson Highway (Route 50), exit and turn left on Collington Road (Route 197), right on Annapolis (Route 450), go past modern parish church, and take next road leading up to the Chapel on the Hill.
