SOUTERN HOME INSURANCE COMPANY OF THE CAROLINAS CHARLESTON, S. C. FRANK L. & GEO A. HOYLE, AGENTS Shelby, N. C. October 25, 1932 Hon. Baxter Durham, State Auditor, Raleigh, N. C. Dear Sir: Mr. A. M. Hamrick, C. S. C., of our county has just shown me a letter from your department, under date October 4th., with reference to application for pension for J. M. Queen, of Cleveland County. I note that you say that you find no record of hi service, neither could it be found in the War Department at Washington. The Board at the time we passed on his application was gully aware of the fact that his name did not appear on the N. C. Roster, but from a thorough questioning of this old gentleman, and other evidence, there was no doubt left that he rendered service as he stated. He enlisted in McDowell County, and Company "A" 49th, Regiment was made up from the counties of Buncombe and McDowell. Mr. Queen has been living in this county since shortly afte the surrender, and has not kept in touch with his old comrades, and does not know whether any of them are living. The Capt. of this company was an uncle of mine. With the Roster in my hand, I asked the old man to give me the names of some of his officers, and other members of the company, and he just rattled off numbers of them without any hesitancy, and seemed so thoroughly familiar with the company, and the actions of same, that as stated above the Board had no doubt of his service. This old Confederate is totally blind and has no means of support, and we must have a Pension for him. I have known him personally for a long time, and so far as I have ever heard no one doubts his veracity. You stated in your letter that you were enclosing a "Questionaire" for Mr. Queen to fill out, but you failed to enclose. If you think necessary, forward one to me, and I will get it filled out. I trust the State Board will approve this application without further effort on the par of the Local Board. A prompt answer will be appreciated. Frank L. Hoyle Chm'n. Cleveland County Pension Board
