For those who wonder about the strange names and our interest in them. Clan history states that the MacQueens left the Isle of Skye in the 1600's. They settled in Strathdearn and eventually came into possession of the lands of Corrybrough I was hoping someone would ask about Strathdearn and Corrybrough, I had the same questions - and then one day it dawned on me. I simply typed in Strathdearn on Google Search and there was a whole page of listings. I did the same for Corryborough and got the same result. Strathdearn is a beautiful valley in the Highlands about half way between Inverness and Aviemore along the River Findhorn. Follow the A9 south out of Inverness toward Carrbridge and you'll see Tomatin, this is the nearest village to the valley. Here is a map URL and a site for Starthnoon Cottage with photos and directions. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?x=277500&y=824500&zoom=3&i sp=200&ism=1000&arrow=y?164,138 www.scotland-info.co.uk/strathnoon/ Corryborough lies on the upper Findhorn in the Strathdearn, it appears that the modern spelling is Corrievorrie. on the maps it seems to be close to where the A9 crosses the Findhorn near Tomatin. look at the site for Corryborough Estate for more info. www.sport.ckdfh.co.uk/corrybrough.htm I have an early clan map that shows the MacQueen lands on the Isle of Skye to be centered around Duntulm, between Uig and Rudha Hunish. This area was actually part of Clan Donald land, our ancestors were a sept of the MacDonald Clan (a sort of protectorate) The Clan Chattan Bond of 1609 was signed by Donald MacQueen of Corryborough. The lands passed out of Clan possession in the 18th century Look at the sites for the Duntulm Hotel castle and Flodigarry Country House Hotel www.duntulmcastle.co.uk/hotel.htm www.flodigarry.co.uk/ Whereas the MacQueens of Skye were widely known as clergymen, the Strathdearn MacQueens became famous as militarists. One of my favorite stories concerns the Marquis of Montrose a strict disciplinarian, who saw one of his soldiers, a MacQueen walk up and punch an Athollman on the nose without provocation. As dirks were being drawn the Marquis interceded and demanded angrily, "Why did you strike that man on the nose?". MacQueen's lame reply was " I couldnae help it -- it was stickin' oot!" One last area to look into is the Castle Sween which stands on a rocky ridge close to the shore of Loch Sween. Several clans have held this old castle including the MacQueens around 1200-1300. www.macewan.net/castlesween.html Hope I haven't told you more than you wanted to know. Obviously it's my favorite subject.
