Hello Gene and other Queen Cousins: Gene, your mention of a Queen Mine Knob and Queen Mine Gap in Rabun Co GA is of interest to me. I had what turned how to be a short-lived false lead last weekend when researching my new found Elizabeth Visage age 90+ living next door to a Henson Queen and wife, both age 50 to 60, in 1840 Rabun Co GA. I viewed several indexes that showed them working in mining. As is so often the disappointing case, when I went to the actual census images from the 1840 Rabun Co GA census, I found they were actually listed in "agriculture." Apparently several transcribers have put many Rabun Co 1840 folks in Mining when they were actually recorded as Agriculture - wrong column I suppose. Anyway, last weekend, when I had this false lead, I searched everywhere for information on mining in Rabun Co Ga 1840. Found only general references to mining there. Were did you find the reference to Queen Mine? I would really like to research this further, just for curiosity if nothing else. I think it curious that the Queen name arrived in Rabun Co GA during the same era gold was discovered there. Surely these Queens at least did a little prospecting during a gold rush. Paulette, Probably fools gold. Not many Queen's I know if got rich off of mining, or working, for that matter. Preferring the relaxing life of sittin' around the old pot bellied stove, smoking a corn-cob pipe, and playing mountain music on the banjo! But, just in case they might have been mining, gold wasn't the only thing they would have been after. Mining could have referred to iron-ore, especially prevalent in the early part of the 1800s back east, and would have created jobs related to timber harvesting for charcoal production for the kilns and smelting process. Now out west, we know that no-one really "worked" at mining. The way you made money was to come out, "develop" a prospect enough to catch the attention of some eastern big-city or European "investors". The you got them to buy you out before they realized all they had was a big hole in the ground, or you kept milking them dry cause the big strike was gonna occur along that vein any day now, just need a few more dollars to keep the operation open till we "strike it rich." That's why we call them "glory-holes." After you bled your investors dry, you ran off as fast as you could screaming "Glory-Hallelujah! I'm rich!" Of course, two days later after you awoke from a drunken stupor in San Francisco, we know who really got rich! Signed, poor in California! Rolla: I agree - it's pretty clear the Queens never "struck it rich." But then again, I am sure there were many, many who tried unsuccessfully. And certainly, there was many ores mined in Georgia in that era other than gold. Just curious. Of course Californiee young 'uns wouldn't understand real Queen livin' in the great state of North Carolina and other southern states. Gene
