What we want when we ask for "earliest known location" is the the first confirmed documented geographic locale where your "brick-wall" first shows up. For most folks, the earliest confirmed ancestor's earliest known and confirmed locate will be the birthplace. But for others, the first confirmed documentary siting of their ancestor might be at some later date and place, and the birthplace may be of speculation, but not really confirmed. So even if you are pretty sure that someone was born in Iredell County NC, but you are not positive, but they positively show up at age 25 in Cobb County Georgia, then I would list Georgia as the earliest known location. Perhaps I should add a column to the spreadsheet to distinguish suspected birth place from first documented location. Both of these bits of information can prove useful in linking all these people sharing common DNA.
