Congradulations Reilley, and welcome to the world of DNA. You are about to embark on a fascinating experience. FTDNA is the firm that the Queen study uses. They are the largest firm so far, and that offers several advantages. Quality wise, all the DNA test companies seem to do quality work. But FTDNA has sort of set the standard, and your DNA markers will be tested against the largest database in existence (almost 40000 participatnts so far). The other companies have smaller databases, and test different markers in some instances. So it becomes hard to really compare results internationally. I think that FTDNA offers the best opportunity to find matches and work back to you genetic routes. They have also been very responsive to any and all questions we have posed. You can also easily upload and enter you data into other databases like Ysearch and Ybase. Since Queen is a maternal line for me, I've not followed the discussions, and know very little, other than that it's been informative for several branches of the Queen family represented on this list. I am being recruited to participate in a DNA project now, on my paternal line, and I have just one question - there are apparently several different companies that provide this sort of genetic analysis as it pertains to genealogy. Are they all created equal? Which one does the Queen list use? And can anyone advise me about the company Family Tree DNA, which advertises itself as "America's first genealogy-driven DNA testing service"? This is the company chosen by the Kidd List organizers at Rootsweb.
