Hi, My name is Ronnie Queen. I've been subscribed to the discussion group for quite some time. I havn't said much yet. I do read the posts in hopes of learning something about my queens. I don't know much. I spoke to my 66 year old father recently but he doesn't know much either. My grandfather was John queen. He married Laura Phillips. They lived in the Belmont area and had 13 children, 2 deceased at birth. one was Eugene whom I was named after. I think my Great grandfather was Avery and moved to Gaston from Clevland County NC. That's about all I know. I confess that I havn't spent a tremendous amout of time researching this. However, my queens don't know much themselves. They were very poor so they didn't keep birth or death records. Anyway, if anyone knows anything or has any sugestions, let me know, Regards, Ronnie E Queen
Hi Ronnie, Your post interests me greatly. The textile mills in Gastonia lured folks from the NC mountains at least as early as 1942. There are two elder Queens (grandchildren of my Alfred of 1810) who made that move: (Dock) Joseph Queen (b. 1898) and William McKinley (Kin) Queen (b. ca 1903). These two men were sons of L. D. and Texie Queen of Jackson County, NC. One of Joseph's sons was J.T. Queen (b. ca 1920 d. 5-21-1997). It is my understanding that his wife's name was Evelyn...although he may have been married more than once. The Belmont area of Gaston County is where they called home to my recollection. I would love to pursue this further with you, even though you believe that your folks came to Gaston from Cleveland County. Please build upon the following with names/dates and any other info, no matter how small, that you would care to do so and e-mail me privately or to the list as you wish. (Hopefully, your father will remember the names of some of his aunts and uncles. If so, that should allow us to find them on the 1920 census. Perhaps it will be a piece of cake to trace the family back a number of decades). Avery Queen ?son....John Queen (b._________ d. __________) m. Laura Phillips .........13 children (including following) .........Eugene Queen ..............Ronnie E. Queen As for me, I was born in Davidson County in '42 (and am not quite as "long in the tooth" as I may have led some to believe). I grew up on a small dirt farm with chores which included milking the cow, slopping the hog, chopping the weeds out of the garden and cornfield, cutting wood for burning in the fireplace and kitchen cookstove, picking cotton, etc. For far too many years I read by kerosene lamp. So, I can relate to poor. But, that will not stop us from finding more data regarding your family if you wish to pursue it further. I love calling North Carolina home. If you don't mind sharing, where do you call home? Gene RQueen6270@aol.com wrote: > Hi, > > My name is Ronnie Queen. I've been subscribed to the discussion group for quite some time.
