    3. John W. Queen, Jr. conscripted 3/25/1862, in Macon County, NC at age 45. Sent to hospital in Atlanta, GA on 1/19/1863, and returned to duty after 2/28/1863. Sent to Lumpkin Hospital in Rome, GA on 4/27/1863, where he died of erysipelas on 6/3/1863. (Thank you, Gene!) Gayle, Robert E. Lee was born in 1807 and served, of course, as a General, I am sure that men in their 50's were serving as soldiers. History books tell of men in their 50's and as young as 14 to 15 who served in the army. Others in their 60's often served as Home Guard soldiers. Go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mscivilw/2ndMS/k_company.htm and scroll down the list as there are some in their 50's. This is only one site where the age of some of the men serving is listed, but you can probably find more.
