Yep, went to the little patch of land down the country and dug a bushel of North Carolina 'taters here on the 27th of January. Wanted to prove again that old William Queen and the others back in the 1700's, 1800's and early 1900's knew how to keep food without 'frigerators and the like. Last fall, after the ground had begun to cool down; I buried a few bushel under a mound of dirt. (I believe that the older folks put them in a hole in the ground.) Anyway, pleased to report that it still works. Got me some good 'taters this afternoon. Might have the missus "fix" a pot of 'tater soup this evening. But, don't guess anyone on this list knows about 'tater soup. (No, don't have to eat 'tater soup; but as an old uncle told me years ago.... I don't want to get too far above my raisin' that I forget lots of the good old "stuff".) Have a good 'un. Gene
Hi All, KY appears to now have the actual death certificates online. I'm not sure at this time what years are covered, but here's the website address - http://kyvitals.com/index.php Carol
Okay, good. Everyone is reading. Here's the deal. We need ONE more cheek swab from a YDNA donor who has ALREADY submitted a sample to our lab of choice and who has a PERFECT MATCH to the probable YDNA of old William. We've sent a few samples with "19" on 520 to a different lab and need one sample of a "20" on 520. It will cost the donor nothing. Yes, there is another lab that offers 10 markers that our lab of choice does not offer. We want to see if those 10 markers hold anything of interest for us. It will also give us a cross-check on the other 33 markers. Please contact me privately if you are the willing donor or if you have sponsored the donor and can get him to provide another swab. It must be the SAME donor who has already participated in our project and we would like it to be a perfect match to old William. Thanks, Gene
Let us not forget that there was gold in Rutherford County as well. My mother often spoke of her great grandfather's gold mine. I don't know which branch of the family tree, but I sure know it didn't make me rich. The Poteet side of my family had several miners in the census in McDowell County. These days the flatland touristers can pan for gold in much the same area for a nominal fee. --Phil Minch--

Of course Californiee young 'uns wouldn't understand real Queen livin' in the great state of North Carolina and other southern states. Gene
Rolla: I agree - it's pretty clear the Queens never "struck it rich." But then again, I am sure there were many, many who tried unsuccessfully. And certainly, there was many ores mined in Georgia in that era other than gold. Just curious. I think we can all agree that most of us Queens prefer the relaxing life, regardless of the geographic, linguistic, or firearm constraints put on some of us. So we can't all have a slice of tar-heel heaven, but I do see more Carolina blue sky on a regular basis than most of the rest of you - so there are some rewards to living in LA LA land. Sherry, Because of the physical description, and a few other things, this interests me. Something tells me I should at least check it out. About how far back was your post. Anything else in the tickler file for this person? Is Brown a county or a city? Rolla I have received the Civil War Records on our "unconnected" Queen Family member whose family was in (Brown) Illinois by the 1840 Census, his father was "Francis Queen" who had died before the 1850 Census. William Johnson QUEEN is 5 ft 6 in tall, with red hair and blue eyes, and a ruddy complection. His younger brother who we lost in Oregon states that his family is from Ireland. If you remember my posting a while back, we first find their "possible trail" in Tenn and then Kentucky, before coming to Illinois. Just found his discription interesting, and wanted to pass it along to you, Sherry Morell Shelts
