    3. March - 9 messages April - 4 messages May - 1 message thus far March 1988 - 4 messages Greetings listmates, Funeral Services will be held for Queen-L in approximately ____ days. Yep, 4 messages were posted to the list during April, which ties with 4 for March 1988. I suppose we don't have any more to share, any more research to do, anything of value to anyone to post any more. So, I suppose we should have a funeral service. Is there a minister in our group? Back in 1902 the family was getting ready to put dirt into the grave of my great grandfather, Rev. James Henry Queen. But, a family member looked up and there on his horse coming down the hill was L. D. Queen and someone spoke up, "Wait for Dee", or so the story was told to me by my great aunt - who was there as a young girl. So, let's wait for the service. I'm trying not to clutter the list as I once did; but there is more information "out there" that will help in the Queen research. I have a hunch that Samuel Queen of Md will be a topic in coming days. Old Henson Queen still deserves a close look by some of us. If we can't help ourselves, can we help others? Gene

    3. Reports of my death are premature, Queen-L was heard to say! Don't know about the rest of you, but I have been busy. I have also got a stack of research to go through, and now re-go through based on the results that just came back, and are now posted on the webpage. I thought I had sent a message to this effect, but I realize now that it did not go to the entire list. There probably has been a lot of off-list discussion that should be done on the list so that everyone can weigh in - so it is important to realize when you hit the reply button, that you probably need to hit the Reply-All button to make sure that the Queen-L list sees the response. Anyway, new results are posted on the webspreadsheet. The results now allow us to change the status of Group 2 (Samuel Queen) to CONFIRMED - at least at the 12 marker level - based on a perfect 12 marker match. This match for Group 2 has implications for the research into the origins of Francis Queen (Group 3), since that group (me) has been chasing some old and new theories that kept open the possibility that our line may have tied back into the Samuel Queen line - but the tie has always been problematic since there is another DNA participant whose ancestry also tied into that line, and our DNA did not match. Consequently, the results for the current participant were sure to take one or the other of us in some new directions. As it stands, looks like Old Francis is still looking to break that brick wall. However, we also know that results at the 12 marker level can be very fickle, so I strongly encourage the two DNA participants on the Group 2 line to upgrade to the 37 marker test. It will prove confirming and informational for both participant's research. I will let Gene and other's more knowledgeable about these lines weigh in, as I was only beginning to explore these lines as a result of following new theories on Francis Queen's origins. For those curious, there has been a theory floating around for a while, and there is a lot of circumstantial evidence to support it, that Francis Queen may have been descended from the Washington/Maryland Queens, and for the most part some of the descendants of that line are chronicled well in the genealogies of Charles Jerningham Queen. The theory was given some weight in the sense that it turns out that there was a large migration of Marylanders in the latter half of the 1700s that settled specifically in the Brushy Mountain area of North Carolina (where Francis Queen is first found in 1778) and, indeed, many of the other lines making up my ancestry can be traced. With the current DNA results, it appears that Francis can make no claim to direct ancestry from the Samuel Queen line. It is possible that Francis Queen may have come from that area and perhaps heritage, but there can be almost no doubt now that a male Queen from that line is responsible for our DNA. We can pilfer through all the possibilities, but other than the circumstantial connection to the Marylanders and the Brushy Mountains, we have no evidence to prove or make any specific claims. We are back at square one, in some ways. So, we are keeping all avenues of research open, but the DNA question itself seems to be resolved. I encourage the two participants in Group 2 to link up and help each other. Now I will point out that I am still waiting for direct male lineage information from several DNA participants to place on the expanded webpage. I believe that providing this information will open up areas in research and help make sense of the DNA. So once again, I ask for all participants, regardless of Group or number of matches to send along that information. Gene is right, when you can't help yourself, you may be sitting on some nice tidbit that may help someone else. The list provides that work space to toss out ideas and get them shot down! Everyone should be a moving target - only way that the strong ideas survive and get passed on to the next generation! 2. Don Queen
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm off to visit a few spots of significance in Virginia that involve the life of my Great Grandfather John Henderson Queen. He was a private in the 3rd NC Cavalry. While reviewing my old records and numerous emails I looked closely at an email I received several years ago concerning a family story told by Pinckney Gaither Queen. He related that Noah Biggerstaff had died in the arms of John Henderson Queen at Camp Chase, Ohio. The problem I've discovered is that the dates don't add up. I've forgotten who mailed the info to me, it was probably Nancy, but I can't find her email. So if anyone can spread a bit of light on this, please drop me a line Thanks, Don Queen -- 13614 Lake Wildwood Dr Penn Valley, Ca. 95946 530-432-9520 Cell 530-277-7372

    3. I have revised the colorful lineage version of the websheet to remove any speculative ancestral connections it may have contained. I found that some folks were getting confused, and some folks assumed that because we made a tentative connection based on circumstantial evidence, that it must be fact. In reality all we were trying to do was help a little. So any colored blocks or names that were added to a specific lineage that were speculative have been removed. What we want on the websheet is the most distant ancestor for which you have documentary evidence. The DNA can tell us a lot, but it can't tell us if you just guessing or how you know what you know. So if anyone wants me to change anything on the websheet regarding any implication that someone is or isn't your last confirmed ancestor, please let me know so that I can change things before anyone gets more confused. I'm confused just trying to unconfuse things! We also need lineages for the following kits . . . 25569 24845 24082 22029 24723 48402 73107 What I need is direct male ancestry back from the donor (who can remain nameless, identified only by kit number) to the most distant confirmed ancestor. Please provide a year of birth, or circa data, for each individual. If we can get this information, we can fill out the remaining blanks in the Group 1 Queen DNA study information. And the rest of us Queens out there that ain't Group 1, time to pony up. Been resting on your laurels, time to get some info into command central. Got to get out of the doldrums! 3. Rolla asked what does this mean to the '19's. Don't think I have any wisdom either - but I love puzzles. Have been looking at William Lewis Queen Sr. 1749 descendent dna samples. As I see it here is what we have. Kit 38694 - William L Jr. 1774 Line, - marker 464c - 16 Kit 25626 - Meredith 1775, line through John and Cynthia - 17 Kit 24082 - James Queen 1777 - 17 Kit 29459 - Joseph H. 1794 - 17 Kit 26040 - Moses 1781 - 16 So gang - I can't tell you what this means to the '19's, cause first off I either have wrong boys for William Lewis Sr, wrong kit numbers, something. Say William Lewis Sr. had the 17, the odds of him having two sons that end up with 16 - slim but it could happen - right? I was all excited at first thinking we had found a way to definitely split off William Lewis Sr. clan - which would eliminate any possibility that the '19' showed up with an unknown son of William Lewis Sr. - but it doesn't look like that. Ok Gene, Rolla and clan - what do you think - what have I done wrong or right? Glenda

    3. Gene seems to think I have some special wisdom. I got squat! I am just a young whippersnapper, to young to have wisdom. I got lots of bluster and opinion, however. But first! How bout them HEELS!!! Now, as Gene has said, I have just posted revised results for kit 38694. The 37-67 marker results reported by FTDNA were in ERROR. It has been corrected and we can now place this participant firmly in the family tree he belongs. We have an interesting development between kits 38694, 26040, 26983 and 35107. If you look at the lineage version of the websheet, you can see how I have grouped this participants pretty easily. But what does it mean? How do we explain these results - are things as easy and obvious as they appear? Well, we might be able to state a few obvious things. It appears that these four participants represent descendants of at least two brothers, sons of William Queen. The sons are Samuel and William Lewis. The William Lewis Queen connections seems pretty solid, since two participants share the same "16" mutation on marker 464c. And it appears to support the documentary record for at least one of the partipants. The descendant participants tracing back to Samuel are a little more interesting. One shares a 17 with the majority of the Group 1 Queens, the other has a 15. a two step difference. But clearly, the documentary record for these two participants supports a common ancestor back to Samuel, and a close lineal relationship for these two participants. But the sequence of the mutations may not be as straightforward as it seems. There are actually a couple of ways or more to explain the results and get the same outcome, but each explanation has implications for the larger Group 1 Queens. The obvious interpretation is that 38694 and 26040 are more closely related than they are two 26983 and 35107. But that leaves the two step mutation from 35107 to 26983 and little problematic to explain, but not unreasonable. It might seem an obvious statement that 35107 shares the 17 with the larger group, and perhaps Old William, the 16 develops later for William Lewis descendants, and the 15 separately develops down the line through Samuel. But I have argued in the past that one should dismiss the simplest solutions first before moving on to more complex explanations. The classic DNA explanation would look to try to explain the sequence beginning with the 17, then stepping down through the 16 to the 15 - sort of like this: 17---->16----->15 Is there anyway we can dismiss this explanation given the result we see. Is there any possible way that the following explanation could hold water. 15--->16--->17 Is it possible that the 15 is the ancestral marker, and we see an upward migration leading to a 17 shared by most of the descendants of Old William? How does that square with the 19/20 split? Just thinking off the top of old baldy! Answer me these things! 2. We made hominy a few years ago. To my best memory you pretty much have it down pat. We rubbed it through our hands to help take the hull off. Then rinsed it many times. It was better than store bought. But things you do yourself are always better. I am happy to say I enjoy the old ways. I am willing to learn most of them. We made molasses last year. I cooked for my first time and I really enjoyed it. We have taken it to someone for the last 3 years. I had a cousin that stayed with me and taught me. He had not cooked for 45 years. But he said it all came back. Shelia ----- Original Message ----- From: O. 1. [QUEEN] Alternate YDNA Lab
    2. O. Eugene Queen
    3. Some time ago I inquired concerning a willing donor with a "20" on 520 and a perfect match to the old William Queen sample. The plan was to send a few samples to an alternate YDNA lab that offered testing on about 10 different locations on the Y chromosome than is offered by our preferred lab. The results are now in on the three samples (one with the 20 and two with the 19). There was no mutation in any of the samples on the additional markers, nor on the other markers included in our 67 marker tests. Thus, this is another stone that has been turned over with no real increase in knowledge. Wanted to share the info with our group and to thank those who volunteered to participate - and those who did. In my opinion there is no benefit in further testing using the alternate lab. Gene

    3. There are stories told by the family about Myra QUEEN, daughter of Stephen QUEEN and Sarah STEWART, wife of John Harrison HUGHES that have always made me think she was one hell of a woman also. Daddy told how John HUGHES was always deserting the Union Army to check on the family at home. He told how he and a *companion* were headed back to Cherokee Co in Dec. When they came to the rivere [I assume he was talking about Tennesee River] it was cold, they were tired and the river was frozen. So they piled branches, etc in the middle of the river to look like brush caught up in the freeze. They crawled inside this *lean to* to sleep a bit. While they were sleeping there was a good snow that covered their hiding place completely, so they stayed there and just slept for a couple of days. I found out later that this companion had to be Grandma Myra. She went WITH her husband when he went to war. After they got there, they found out that there would be no rations for Grandma Myra. So in December Grandpa John got permission to take her home. According to the war records, home was her parents house on the GA-NC border. He never returned, says the roads were being patrolled by Thomas' Legion and he couldn't get through to get back. They charged him with the army carbine and horse he left with. They say he hid in the hills and Grandma Myra carried food to him. He came down every so often to check on her as well. One day while he was at the cabin, they saw a Union patrol headed for the house. Grandpa John didn't have time to leave and there was no place to hide in the house. So the story goes that Grandma Myra had him get down on all fours, sat on his back with her skirts covering him and calmly set on her *stool* and churned butter while the soldiers searched the house for Grandpa John. These are stories told to my Dad by Grandma Myra who died when Daddy was 18, at the age of 90. ----- Original Message ----- From: "O. 3. 1862 March 20: Sarah Malinda Pritchard Blalock cuts her hair, dons men's clothing, and enlists with her husband in the Confederate army, becoming North Carolina's only known female Civil War soldier. 1863 March 18: During what has become known as the Salisbury Bread Riot, several dozen women armed with axes and hatchets storm speculators' stores demanding flour, molasses, and salt in Salisbury. When shop owners refuse to turn over the goods, the women take them by force. ..................now you know, as if ya didn't already. Don't mess with North Carolina wimmin. Gene

    3. Approximately 55 years ago my mom made a "batch" of yellow corn hominy. It was shelled yellow field corn that was boiled (or something) for some period of time and I believe that wood ashes may have been in the kettle or pot. Seems that the ashes were helpful in removing the hull(?) from the kernel. I do not remember if the hominy tasted good; but I buy a can of "store-bought" on occasion. Wife won't eat it, but it's different and I eat it just because. Yes, I'm "into" doing some things that older Queens did decades ago, and maybe some to this very day. Hope so, anyway. Anyone know exactly how to make hominy? Doesn't have to taste like Del Monte, or whatever, but must be real hominy. Thanks, Gene
