    1. [QUEEN] George Queen and George Quin - 1830 Rutherford
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. Data for consideration, especially regarding an Isaac Queen (b. ca 1806-1809 and m. 5-24-1832 to Ruth Hunt in Rutherford) believed by one or more to be a son of a George Queen or George's wife by previous marriage. Which George, if either, should Isaac be linked to and why? (Note: There are Zero "Hunt" families on pg 467. On 503 are Sarah and Catharine Hunt.) 1830 Rutherford County, NC census, pg 467: George Queen M 30<40 F 30<40 M 15<20 F 15<20 M 5<10 M <5 F<5 F<5 1830 Rutherford County, NC census, pg 503: George Quin M 20<30 F 30<40 M 15<20 F 15<20 M 10<15 M 5<10 M 5<10 M <5 F <5 F <5 I suggest that George Quin is not the father of either the second oldest male or the second oldest female in this household. Therefore, I suggest that this George Quin married, or is living with, a lady with some children not his own. Now, I'm leaving this Isaac Queen to others unless something bubbles up and gets me on him again. Oops, I forgot. The Sarah Hunt on pg 503 is age 20<30 with no other females in household; but with a boy age 10<15 and one <5. The Catharine Hunt family consists only of two females; one 90<100 and one 50<60. Gene

    1. [QUEEN] Bracket/Queen
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. Hi all, I'm tinkering with the Quin names/families on pg 503 Rutherford Co., NC census. George Quin and Peggy Quin were neighbors; then about 6 houses away was a Thomas Bracket; then about 8 houses away were Sarah Hunt, George Towry, then Catharine Hunt; then 5 houses and James Quin then Merody Quin as neighbors. Checking my "saved" mail, I found these notes: Mary (Polly) Queen (b. 1824 m. abt 1845 d. 1903 Union Co GA) m. Thomas Brackett. Both from Rutherford Co. NC. (Moved to Union Co, GA in mid 1840's per Betty Knight. Don't know if married in NC or in GA.) ..Mary C. Brackett (b. ca 1847) ..David W. Brackett (b. 1848) ..Matilda Jane Brackett (b. 1849) ..Nancy C. Brackett (b. 1850) ..Sarah Margaret Brackett (b. 8-10-1851) ..Others....omitted .........So, 1. I guess my first question regards Thomas Brackett. (This Thomas "Bracket" on 1830 Haywood was age 20<30, 2 males <5, female 20<30, female <5.) Q: Does this Thomas fit in some way with "your" Thomas? 2. Details of the 1830 Rutherford pg 503 Quin folk (anything ring a bell?): George Quin M 20<30 F 30<40 M 15<20 F 15<20 M 10<15 M 5<10 M 5<10 M <5 F<5 F<5 Next door: Peggy Quin F 40<50 F 15<20 F 15<20 M 5<10 22 houses away: James Quin M 20<30 F 20<30 F 5<10 M <5 F <5 F <5 next door to James: Merody Quin M 50<60 F 50<60 M 20<30 F 20<30 F 10<15 Comments, anyone? 1. [QUEEN] Isaac Queen of ca 1825-1830
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. I just have to mess with this for a while and get some data summarized for this Isaac. Will welcome any and all attempts to add, delete, correct, link the following: 1. From Reiley's webpage (any typos will be mine): 1850 Cleveland Co., NC census: Charles Queen, 45 (b. NC) Martha, 41 (b. NC) (all following children born in NC) ...Isaac, 21 ...John, 19 ...William, 17 ...Sarah, 15 ...Dickerson, 12 ...Joseph, 10 ...Martha, 8 2. Most, if not all, the following is avail. on Reiley's webpage; but I wanted to put my hands on the census, so I visited the library and made photocopies.) 1860 Cleveland Co., NC census, pg 736 & 737: Isaac Queene, 34 (b. ca 1826) (owns land $40) ...John Queene, 8 ...Thos Queene, 6 ...Pinkney Queene, 4 ...Martha Queene, 2 immediately prior to Isaac (pg 736): John Queene, 30 (owns land $342) Susan Queene, 20 ...Wm E. Queene, 7/12 immediately after Isaac (pg 737) (note the differences in ages from the 1850 census....for every single member of this household! OEQ): Charles Quene, 50 (b. ca 1810) (no land ownership noted) Martha Quene, 45 ...Joseph Quene, 16 ...Dickerson Quene, 18 ...Martha Quene, 12 ...Alfred Quene, 8 15 households from Isaac (pg 738): Joseph Queene, 20 Margret Queene, 20 ...Sarah E. Queene, 3 ...Amanda J. Queene, 1 Nancy Queen, 23 3. Now, this info from Roger in a Feb 12 post to the list: Merideth Queen (b. 1783 in Gaffney, SC) m. Jane Newton (b. 1784 in NC d. 1860) ...George Queen (b. 1797) ...John Queen (b. 1805) ...Charles Queen ......Isaac Queen (b. ca 1825-1830 Cleveland Co.? m. in Cleveland Co., NC d. 1901 in McDowell Co., NC) m. Lucinda Towery (Note: lots of Towry listed on 1830 Rutherford) .........John A. Queen (b. 1852) .........Thomas Lawson Queen (b. 1853) .........Joseph P. Queen (b. 1855) .........Martha E. Queen (b. 1858) .........Mary Jane Queen (b. 1859) .........Margaret C. Queen (b. 1864) .........Dock P. Queen (b. 1866) .........Susan A. Queen (b. 1868) .........Phronis C. Queen (b. 1869) .........Alice Petima Queen (b. 1871) 4. What was the year of birth of Isaac? Was it 1829 (calculated per 1850 census) or 1826 (calculated from 1860 census)? Again, calling on Reiley's webpage; an 1844-45 petition to the General Assembly included the name of Isac Queen. Assuming it was a "proper" signing, he would have had to be 21 (or 18), thus would have had to have been born ca 1823 or 1826. So? Guess we need more dates to choose from. Or, anyone have a coin? 5. Anyone know this Isaac Queen's whereabouts in 1870, 1880, 1900? McDowell Co.?? Gene

    1. [QUEEN] "my" George Queen

    3. Gene Queen recently asked on the list if I would post my information on my ancestor George Queen: So here's a brief compilation of my information. George Queen was born in North Carolina between 1788 and 1796, estimating from his age on the 1850 (54), 1860 (66), and 1870 (78) federal censuses of Tippah Co. TN, and his headstone in New Hope Cemetery, Benton Co. MS ( "Died 1877, Age 88"). As Gene Queen stated, there is a marriage bond dated 11-8-1818 in Rutherford Co. NC between a George Queen and “Mrs. Betsy Queen” The surety for this bond was Mariday Queen, making it likely that this IS our George. Perhaps this Betsy was the widow of one of George’s brothers, and perhaps she died soon after? More inquiry is needed here. George married his (second?) wife Nancy Newton (born in North Carolina around 1791 ) about 1822, and they lived first in Rutherford County NC and later in Lincoln (later Gaston) County NC until the 1849 , where George was a farmer. George and Nancy had the following known children , all born in NC: 1. Meredith (Maraday) Queen, born 8 July 1823 , married Lavinia Sarah Summey 25 Sept., 1843 in Lincoln Co., NC ; 2. Nancy Queen, born 14 January 1828 NC, married Ephraim Stroup 15 October 1847 Lincoln Co. NC, died 1 January 1897 Benton Co. MS; 3. Elizabeth Queen, born about 1831in NC; 4. Martha Jane Queen, born about 1834 in NC, married James Pybas about 1857, a widow by 1870 with 4 children; and 5. George D. Queen, born about 1841 in NC, married Mary C. Strong 1861 in Tippah Co. MS. The known children do not account for all the younger individuals in George's household on the 1830 and 1840 censuses. There appear to have been at least 3 other children - a son born about 1825, a daughter b. abt. 1829, and another son b. 1830-1835. Some of these children may have died in childhood. There also may have been other, older children. One very likely candidate is Margaret Queen, b. abt 1827. Mrs. Rebecca Williams Harris of Memphis says that the Margaret Queen who married Henry Bird in Lincoln Co., NC on 2-6-1845 was the daughter of George and Nancy Queen, and this fact is supported by the fact that she and her husband migrated to Tippah Co., MS, and are found next door to George and Nancy in 1850. In 1849 or 1850 , George and Nancy Queen moved with their family and those of their two eldest children to Tippah County, Mississippi, where George farmed and his son Meredith was a blacksmith. They lived next door to each other on the 1850 Tippah Co., census. George's wife Nancy Queen died in 1854, and was buried in the New Hope Cemetery, in that portion of Tippah County which became Benton County in 1870. George Queen died in 1877, and was buried along side of his first wife, Nancy, in the New Hope Cemetery in Benton County, MS. ----- Original Message ----- From: O Eugene Queen <EQueen@lexcominc.net> To: Reiley Kidd <radcrk@home.com> Sent: Monday, March 13, 2000 11:24 PM Subject: Children of George Queen > Hi Reiley, > If you have posted it or care to do so, will you please share the names > and estimated DOB as you understand them of the N. 2. Jerry Dyer
    3. Hi group! My vote on Gene's item #2 would naturally be prejudiced since these gentlemen are in my line of Queen ancestors. A quick analysis of the census records would find in 1870 Moses Queen living with his father James - HH#077 for Blairsville, GA., age 42. Moses' birth year was 1828. The opinions should prove interesting, and I'm always open to new information. Regards, Jerry.

    1. [QUEEN] Isaac Queen of ca 1806-09
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. Hi all, Have finally been able to get back to the Queens a bit and am wondering: 1) Has anyone received any documentation or explanation from Mrs. Deward Queen or Morris Queen which supports a link of the subject Isaac Queen to George or Betsey Queen? 2. Is there a concensus that the Moses J. Queen of 1850 Union Co., GA census, HH342 was NOT the s/o Isaac Queen as the expanded posting of the census indicates....but, rather he was the son of James C. Queen? 3. Since the 1840 Washington Co., TN census lists 2 males, age <5, in the household of Isaac and the 1850 Union Co., GA census lists one (George) of that age plus 10, I assume that the second male died between 1840-1850. Any agreement or disagreement? 4. Rutherford County marriages indicate "Mariday" Queen was bondsman for the marriage of George Queen to Betsey Queen in 1818. Pg 503 of the 1830 Rutherford census lists George Quin, Merody Quin, James Quin, Peggy Quin, Thomas Bracket, ??? Towry, Jesse Ledford, John Towry and George Towry (not in this order). Also note from Reiley's webpage that Lincoln Co. reflects in 1840 a George Quinn, James Qunn and others listed as Quin. Ages of persons in household of George Quin of 1830 Rutherford = 12111 and 200101. Merody Quin is apparently aged 50<60. Just wondering if Reiley's George Quinn of Lincoln could be the George Quin of Rutherford...and if his Betsey could have been as much as 10 yr older than George. In any event, if Betsey was born in 1790; she could have had a child...Isaac...born ca 1810. I suppose all this has been beaten to death; but, just in case... Gene

    3. Dear Listers, I regretfully must pass along some bad news. My grandfather, Ernest Frank Wesley Queen, passed away this morning at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington, KY. He was born in Copperhill, TN on January 22, 1902. He grew up working the mines in the area and also made a pretty good batch of moonshine. (At least by his own account) He moved to Lexington when he was about 21 and became a farmer and butcher. I'll send out the obit when it gets written. I know that we haven't been able to connect my line to any one else's on the list , but I still think of you all as family. Thanks for being here. your cousin, Charlton Queen

    3. Found this on a posting and wondered if anyone had read and/or heard about this. May have some bearing on our Buncombe County Queens... When Walton County, Georgia, was formed, the boundary between Georgia and North Carolina had not been located. North Carolina believed that most, if not all, of Walton County was actually in the boundaries of Buncombe County, North Carolina, which was formed in 1791. North Carolina issued land grants and tried to collect taxes in this area it considered to be Buncombe County. Georgia denied the validity of these claims. The confusion and arguing over the limits of each state's authority led to what was called the "Walton War". The absence of a legally recognized boundary by either Georgia or North Carolina aggravated the problem. Violence continued between pro-North Carolina and pro-Georgia settlers for some time. The 35th latitude was the recognized border by both North Carolina and Georgia. A commission was formed in 1807 to survey the area, and it was discovered that all of Walton County lay in North Carolina. Walton County was returned to North Carolina, as part of Buncombe County, in 1813. In 1838 it was part of Henderson County, and today the area is centered in Transylvania County, North Carolina.

    1. [QUEEN] Queens - Union Co., Ga.
    2. Diane Carney
    3. Hello to all, For those interested in the Union Co. GA QUEENs, I have posted some additional information to the Union Co., Ga. website at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/UnionWill Also, below is some information found on my last trip to Blairsville. Re: Lewis W. Queen son of Lewis Queen (Sr.) Record for Lewis W. Queen marriage to Sarah Robison on 12/25/1866. I believe that Sarah was the first of at least 3 wives for Lewis W. Queen. Entries found for Lewis W. Queen, concerning guardianship for Lewisa (Louisa?) J. Bowlin(g) and Sarah? Malisa Bowlin(g). Bowling was spelled Boulin and Bowlin. According to these records, Lewisa and Sarah? were the orphans of Bluford Boulin and Melinda Queen. The dates range from April - July 1870. Upon checking the 1870 census, I found Lewis W. Queen, age 30, in Blairsville Dist. HH# 68, with Luisa J., age 10, and Susan? M., age 6, in the household. Also in this household was John T., age 1 month (not so sure about this age, see below), and Mary Queen, age 22. I believe Mary Queen was list last on the census in order to indicate that she was not the wife. My theory is ..... Lewis married second, Bluford Bowlin(g)'s widow, Melinda and then Melinda died, leaving Lewis with the 2 children from her previous marriage (can't find marriage record in Union, may have married in another county). A Malinda C. Queen is buried in the Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery in the Blairsville Dist. According to the Cemetery Records Book, the tombstone gives her birth date as Apr 1, 1836 and her date of death as Feb.12, 1870. If this is the same person then she was probably the mother of the infant, John T., and most likely died in or from childbirth. Thus, the sister, Mary "Polly" Queen was called in to care for the children. According to the annual return that Lewis filed with the court on July 1st, 1870, the estate belonging to the girls consisted of: 88 acres of land worth less than $100.00 1 cow & her calf $20.00 9 head of sheep $9.00 2 head of stock hogs $6.00 Farming tools $4.00 House hold goods & kitchen furniture $100.00 Total $305.00 By November of 1870, guardianship of Louisa Boling & Susannah M. Boling (new spelling of names here) was in the hands of Thomas N. Queen. Thomas N. Queen, Alfred Queen & Daniel Stephens were bound and sworn to administer, make inventory and annual reports on the girls' behalf for the estate, with Thomas named as guardian. [Note: the above guardianship records were found in the Union County record book, "Inventory & Appraisements, Annual Returns, and Twelve Months Support 1867- 1877"; pages 184, 185, 218, 219] For a 3rd wife, Lewis W. Queen married Jane Walker on 10/17/1874, in Union Co.. Unfortunately, Lewis W. does not appear on the 1880 Union Co. Census to confirm this. Any comments on this are welcome.
